My story is that I've been working as a product designer for a few years and felt the need to go back to my real passion which was animation. I applied to a school here at home (Vancouver) early last year and didn't get in. That rejection was pretty tough to bear but it also gave me the driving force to continue. I quit my job in August and went back to school part time to work on my portfolio for this fall. At that time, I thought I was going to just apply to the same school but I thought since I'm doing all this work for the portfolio anyway, might as well hand it in to other schools as well. That led me to apply for Seneca and Sheridan.

I just heard back from Seneca a few weeks ago and got an offer already so that feels really great. I'm just waiting for the big honcho, Sheridan to see if they'll accept me also. This time last year I was so incredibly dejected but looking back at it now, I'm happy I didn't get in to school. I really wasn't ready. After 6 months of immersing myself in papers and pencils I think I'm at a better state now come what may.

That being said, here is my portfolio for your viewing pleasure.

Thanks again to all of you people! Best of luck!
I feel like this post got missed cause I only saw it reading back for some reason, haha. But congratulations on getting into Seneca. I'm surprised you used a different character design than the one in your personal work, that was a pretty well done character. Best of luck to you with Sheridan! I want more lurkers to comment like this too! I see you lurking. >;3

@Dunnstar sweet, I really like to play l4d1&2 over here too! it'd be cool to play a game together, all those extra maps and mods are pretty awesome too !

Just curious about all of your experiences with 3D modelling as well as anything to do with 3D-CG. I personally had experience through modding games and such. I started off making levels in the hammer editor for valve games, mostly BSP geometry which was quite limiting. I then fumbled around with maya imported few tiny things here and there to try and reduce the limit of shapes and objects I could use in hammer editor. Later I discovered UDK and looking at all those videos and demos of the engine made me drool over all the possibilities of ways I could play with it . I managed to model in a Khanjar(Bedouin dagger) and imported it into udk. I managed to make the character hold the knife but I had a tough time trying to get the animation to trigger in the code(so annoying with all the debugging and what not), I then fumbled about and tried to model my school in UDK for teh lulz. Afterwards I sort of got bored and eventually data started to get misplaced here and there so I just stopped experimenting with it and what not. I plan on picking it up again over the summer since I've improved my drawing skills to the point where I can use it as a tool to plan out everything(since I usually wasted tons of time on small things because I never had a plan) although my list of "Things to do in the summer" is really piling up.

I have almost no experience with 3D modeling. I watched a few videos about Maya and I was blown away with its awesomeness. Then I looked it up and my wallet exploded. ._.

Also, I'm fairly sure I want to go into character design for animation and end up working for a big name company (dreaaaaams ;u; )and designing concepts for the main characters. I love the link someone gave of the character sheets of popular animated characters. So cool. owo

@Kamil Cool, we should set that up. I'll think about setting up my steam this week actually and message you when its ready. I've been through some of the custom maps, amazing. Played like a zelda custom map, a mario one, suicide blitz. Really quite fun, especially if you have 4 people. Anyone else play l4d2? We could get a sheridan hopefuls game going - as maybe a distraction? lol

I actually have zero experience with 3d modelling and the likes.

@kawai I'd love to give Shinkai a shot, you have any movies of his I should start with? like a good representation of his writing/style?

@Dunnstar sure thing, I also need to remind myself to download the game because I technically deleted most everything to end my distraction xD, just curious if you have played TF2 or Garry's mod as well?

lololol I see people entering and leaving the room , is something difficult to setup or something? Anyway, I was just wondering if you guys generally attempt to "grind" foundations a lot or do you just casually sketch?

Thanks xKotu! I was originally going to use the 60s gal for my character design but my animator friend advised me to go with a full animation style character instead since it shows more of my skill. But I couldn't part with the my 60s gal so she got put into my personal work instead. Hopefully having both demonstrates my range as an artist.

@paperpencil I think it did. I really like how you added an artwork in the title page of your portfolio too. xD Although, I did notice you added shading for your hand drawings and you should be careful to always follow the requirements because they asked for no shading specifically. Shouldn't impact you too much, but just a little side note. :3

Well, even though you are suppose to be following instructions carefully, adding in shading simply just makes it harder to evaluate. As long as it shows the foundations have been competently done you would not have trouble getting a four. I believe I saw rendered hand drawings still recieving a four.

I hear not a lot of people get in straight out of highschool, which kinda worries me because I'm in grade 12 and applying. Also, everyone's portfolios look really good which reminds me of how high the competition really is. Ahh I'm going to be anxiety-riddled until next month when results come in.

Thats what I dream to be but I'm also torn between my most recent interest to be a creative director or the same things mentioned above but in the game industry. As you can see, I have a strong love for games and 2d animation. Even though I feel that Sheridan cannot entirely teach me what I yearn to know, I like how they give you room to be amazingly creative. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. At this point, I have picked up voice acting. I never realized how ranged my voice was xD.
I love Hayao Miyazikis work! He is definitely an inspiration. He always includes such little details in the way the characters move that make you really feel they are alive. I cant remember what it was that I was watching, but someone was talking about how even in one of the scenes in Spirited Away, the character puts on their shoes and even does the little kick to make the shoe fit better. It just those little nuances that add to his worlds that make them so full of life

Aspire to inspire is a great goal to have, and i know Animation in sheridan will be a perfect fit for that, since everyone has such motivation and comradery, that im sure we will all inspire each other!

Great portfolio you have there! Your hard work and dedication really shows through, i think they will definitely see your enthusiasm for the program. Rejection is tough, but like you said, it gives you the knowledge and experience to do better. Cant be able to fully appreciate success, if you havent known what it means to experience failure as well.

I think we all are better off after this portfolio experience. It was definitely a learning experience for me, since my character I created was the first 2d character I've ever made. Ive always had an undying love for the fine arts, but in recent years I've had more fascination with 2d art, so this is my first experience with it, and I loved it.

Ahhh you're all posting while I'm asleep! Now I have to catch up!

On 3D -I've done small bits of 3D modeling. Mainly just this pistol I made for TF2: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m7...7dlwo1_500.png
It was fun, but I couldn't get a lower poly version for submission because my mesh was the messiest shit ever.

On Miyazaki - Although there is little out about it, The Wind Is Rising really piques my interest. Same with From Up on Poppy Hill. I love the action of Castle in the Sky, but these slower paced titles seem really refreshing.

On Steam - I have TF2 and LFD2, though I suck at both. Really only played LFD2 twice. Sheridan hopefuls game (and best case scenario, Sheridan first year group!) sounds like fun.

@Everyone who just posted their portfolio - They are all looking fantastic! Let's all take a collective exhale.

Yeah, I really missed doing art I enjoy. All that hand drawings and object drawings was so boring.

    @Uptown uh, flash.

For the people interested in L4D2, perhaps post up your steam profiles? We can arrange one game for next friday(march 8th) or something? see how it goes.
