I'm with you CrimsonRook. I feel like I learned more in the process of making my portfolio in the past month and a half than in the past year. xD

I'm so lucky that reading week for my current school fell right before the deadline. Nothing but art 24/7 for the past week. Now I have a 2.8k essay to put out in two days haha. Whoops. :d

Yeah I've made some strides with improving my drawing skills(with my sketchbook as proof ) with the added pressure of the portfolio to do though just to remind everybody that even if you do get in the battle has been won but the war ain't over. For example there is assignments in different mediums for first year animation that I still need to learn like colouring and painting. Therefore I made it my goal to improve my proficiency with painting and colors using digital software since I've never really touched paint or colours. Doing the portfolio helped me figure out my weakness and I plan on destroying each an everyone that get in my way.

Hey kamil, good to see you working on your other skills. painting is really quite fun but doing it digitally wont improve you as quickly as traditionally. My skill with digital art jumps everytime I complete a painting. I have a great book on color too.

Honestly the portfolio prep has really made me a stronger artist, it spells good things for the program. I really hope I make it this time.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/09ktm7 Stephen Quiller. excellent, excellent book!

but betty edwards color art book is great too.

Oerr...That would be a good idea. I kind of hate working with paint. s: Hearing about the first year projects in different mediums kind of concerns me now. Hm..

I can't believe this is it guys. I hand my portfolio in on Monday >.< Oh and I changed my blog adress so here is the updated link. http://sarahgorananimation.blogspot.ca/ I have a lot of crap posted on there so you'll have to look at older posts to see the actual good quality scans.

@OfficialLamp You can definitely see a lot of improvement in your portfolio this year! I think you'll have a great chance this year!

@DrawntoDeath the room and Object drawings are usually marked pretty hard and they have some important sections in it like composition and story. The Character is the most important of all but is pretty easy to get good marks in. Storyboard has the most sections in it so some people consider it the most important, but I say its only important for story and composition and creativity. Life drawing and the personal section is the easiest marked I find. these are just my personal opinions though, backed by some theory

Hey guys, I see a lot of you have mailed your portfolios in. I'm doing mine in person and I've been working overtime this weekend to get it all done (I started a bit late, haha). Anyway, all I really have left to finish is my object drawings. I've already got roughs but I'm wondering, what makes a good object drawing? What'll they give you points for, and what will make them take points off?

Anyway, I'm not expecting to get in, although it'd be nice to be waitlisted or something at least. I guess we'll see! I'm seeing a lot of portfolios that didn't get in but seem like they deserved to be accepted. Guess they have to mark hard with all the people applying.

In my opinion, here's what I think makes a good object drawing:

    - Making sure they all seem to sit on the same plane. I wasn't sure whether to include perspective on these but I did make sure everything lined up right.
    - Showing structure. I.e. Cut spheres in half with underdrawings and show the inner circle in the middle. I saw someone do this with an orange and showed the slices inside and that was really neat imo.
    - Making the external force obvious, and interesting. I feel like I lost marks on my application last year cause I kept all of the objects in the exact same place and they were just ripped up. I didn't really have anything in mind. s:
    - Composition which I'm wonky on so I can't really detail that one as much. I kind of just try to make sure the drawing doesn't make your eye fall off the page. owo

    Hope that helps!

@pepe-silvia - For the objects I consider composition to be one of the most important as it's scored in so few drawings. To fill in what xKotu was saying, try to keep the image in balance. Here's some examples with the thought process I used on mine:

    Name: triangle.png
Views: 267
Size: 40.3 KB
Triangles are a strong compositional element because they are sturdy and dynamic. I wanted to make the objects stand tall and firm in the frame.

    Name: negative.png
Views: 262
Size: 7.9 KB
Negative and positive space is an important one. You want to take up as much space as possible with your objects, but still give them enough breathing room to keep focus. (Again, balance it key!)

    Name: layering.png
Views: 268
Size: 8.1 KB
Last, I focused on layering and trying to create distance between the objects so that they appear spread out on the plane. I could have done a bit better here to be honest, but still something to look out for.

There's other things like avoiding tangents, rhythm, flow and such but if you want to know more in depth this is great: https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=h...cture-this.pdf but it's more so composition for storytelling purposes.

I really wish I had more training in art. I'm completely self taught. My city lacks any decent art classes. I understand perspective but composition is still something I lack. I also stink at backgrounds I pretty much just draw characters. I'm hoping more for the game design course since I love programming. But it still has the art aspect that I'm looking for too.

Yeah, I feel the same way. Try to not let that stop you though. Seriously, the internet is the best resource out there. I've had some formal training over the few months but that's only a few night classes here and there. Tbh, most of the stuff I was taught I ended up finding either before the class ( but just didn't have the drive to keep working on it til I understood ), or I found it later on the internet. It gives you the art motivated atmosphere but you can always find the information online and work from there. Just a word of advice. :3

@Official Holy crap, thank you so much for this post. I was completely lost on composition before this. You may have just boosted me up a couple points. Thank you!

@pepe-silvia - Composition isn't as scary as it seems. Really, it's just "how can I arrange this to make it look better".

@official True. Sigh, the thing that sucks is I see a lot of these portfolios and the ones that did get in and the ones that didn't get in all look pretty much equally good to me. With the exception of some flaws I notice, on a blind test I wouldn't be able to tell which portfolios were denied. I saw yours from last year and I was straight up surprised that you got such low scores for some things. That's what scares me I guess, that I can't really tell what's good and what isn't. Bah. I guess it comes with time/practice/learning hard theory on art

I see a few people on here saying that, and truthfully I still don't know what to think. Another thing to remember is that mailing in means I had to scan with a terrible scanning and print it out with a public library printer. That probably killed what little line quality I had, and same for presentation.

I'm so glad my parents had just bought a brand new all in one printer mine literally died won't even turn on on the same day Iwas starting to scan my work... I was sscared it was a sign

I mentioned this forum to my one prof during one of my earlier critiques lol. I don't think he's the type to laugh at our anxiety though. You should try to keep track of your irrational thoughts. Some could turn into great animation shorts

The important thing is being able to spot what's irrational and ignore it, and what's rational and use it.

Now I am scared. I tried to print at both a printing store as well as at home and both were crappy prints. Gah do you think they could be a LITTLE forgiving about the printing quality because I tried my best but it just does not print properly. I did them at a rather high resolution too

Yeah, my printing quality especially on blue lines is so abysmal. I wouldn't blue line it unless you have a high quality scanner or submitting in person. Either way, you did what you could Kamil, no use stressing now.

Hey guys I'm wondering what ones I should use for my portfolio...

I think I should do the top three... (because it's blatantly shows construction)

but I want to use either 1 or 2 to replace either A/B/C, they both have light construction as opposed to concise construction D:

ignore 3 and 4 i might use it for personal idk

A, B, C fit the mold sheridan is looking for most closely. What with the structure underneath and all.

    I like number 2 though.

Hey all, what do you suggest I pick for personal art? Should the personal art be done in the same style as the rest of portfolio? (no shading or coloring)

Which animals do you think I should put in my portfolio? I kind of like the two bears but I feel like if I were to put in both the panda bear and the polar bear, they'd think I'd only know how to draw bears?? http://dianeshaher.blogspot.ca/

I would pick the panda and the lion/tiger one. The polar bear isn't as strong imo.
