Procrastinator 2: Judgment Day (a.k.a. Johan's Sketchbook)

Troublesome weekend. My wrist started aching on Saturday so I just read books and did stretching exercises that day. Didn't want to make it worse.

This is what I drew on Friday:

My wrist was still aching a little bit today. Drew some stuff anyway (I don't want to slack off more than necessary) but I didn't dare drawing that much.

A visit to the museum. Forgot my eraser.

I think I finished my first Bargue drawing today. Gonna start with a new one tomorrow and try not to rush things. I don't want to repeat the same mistakes, you know.

WIP. This one was fun to do but took forever. I combined different photos in order to create some chaos and then tried to see something in the mess. To train my creativity.

Yesterday: Some sloppy 10 min, 15 min, 15 min and 10 min studies from photos. I really need to practise more on painting digitally and with values. And how do you paint grass and shrubbery?! My head hurts from not being able to figuring this out, hehe




Spent almost two hours on this one. Unbelievable. I relly need to work on my speed as well.

I have no excuse for slacking off these past days, especially when I'm well aware I need to draw a lot more in order to become better.

I only managed to do a self portrait the day before yesterday, and some unscanned doodles while listening to a lecture by Swedish comic book artist Ola Skogäng.


I'm quite pleased with the self portrait, but I need to practice drawing hair.

This is what I did today:

Self portrait, 60 min. The right eye is placed too far to the left and could be a little bit larger. And I still need to practice drawing hair.

Sorry for the absence. This is turning out to be a bad habit of mine.

I've been working on my webcomic the last weeks. Unfortunately, I'm still in the script stage. But I'll try my best to finish the script this week so I can go back to just drawing. Gonna do some anatomy studies while working on the script. To, I dunno, catch up.

Okey, so these past weeks has been fairly interesting. I'm not in a relationship anymore, I'm working on some old unfinished assignments so I can get my higher education diploma and I recently enrolled in a ten week course called "Concept Art". But this isn't my personal blog so let's see some drawings instead. Slow start today

Read some Bridgman and tried to do some studies. I'll try to finish "Constrctive Anatomy", study some other anatomy source and come back to Bridgman later on. Because I'm feeling far too unexperienced for him right now.

Old school assignment. Take two photographs, draw a grid and copy the images. I also has to ink them. The inking on this one is very sloppy.


Tried adding hair to my NDS wanderer, but it didn't turn out well.


I don't know what the heck is wrong with me! I know I have to practice drawing hair but I haven't done it yet! Grrr!

Hahaha XD I'm sorry. I'm very, very sorry. It's supposed to be a head from imagination. I'm gonna have to work on the hair, learn how to render skin and... how to construct a head I also have the feeling I might be stuck in "same face territory" (if you know what I mean). I really have to draw more girls and digital stuff from imagination.

Unfortunately, I didn't do anything yesterday because of illness :'( Slept most of the day.

Still feeling like crap, so not much today:

Just playing around digitally with two "speed paintings". Around 45 min each.

(Ugh... that cast shadow, not too pleased with this one)


(I should've made the robot smaller, making that tombstone thingamajig more threatening. Speaking of the tombstone - it doesn't feel like stone and the edges are too straight)

Face from imagination. Too pale. Shadows look like dirt. I was aiming for hot lights and cold shadows. I totally messed that up. I can't has colours Let's see if i can save it tomorrow. Maybe try some photo studies as well.

Getting back to normal health. Yay Did this from imagination. It was really fun. Took a couple of hours, though. I blame my slow speed on inexperience.

My motivation and discipline have been going steadily downhill since November, but this current illustration is slowly turning the tide (Y)

I guess I have to go back to drawing gestures and study anatomy again, and balance that with working on digital stuff.

Speaking of digital stuff. I was like: "Hmmm... Why not medieval pig princess?" Still a WIP, can't decide if I should ditch the eyebrows or not.

Awesome figure sketches Johan. You say you've been lazy but It really doesn't seem so with the amount of anatomy studies you've done. They will totally benefit your work in the long run, you already seem to have a good grasp of the figure. I'd love to see you take it into some more serious pieces.

I tried to finish this one. I'll probably leave this one unfinished and start on a new one. But I still have to do some gemstone and hair studies.


I also started on a self portrait with conté pencils. It was hard! I ended up just doodling shapes while trying out the pencils.

Hey Johan,

Great sketchbook, your figure drawing is coming along really well I see that you are drawing on a couple of methods when constructing your figures, I'm still trying to figure out which methods I prefer.

You've improved so much in a few months, I'm jealous. I think you have a good understanding of form, especially with your figure drawings and how you use contour lines wrapping round some of your figures to denote form and give them solidity. Keep doing what you're doing, with the mixture of studies, still lifes and drawings from imagination. I have a feeling you're going to be great in a few years. Now I just need to steal some of your motivation
