The only time I fill out surveys these days if they at least promise me a chance to free stuff (that I'd want like Amazon Gift cards or $$) and actually put together surveys that work.![]()
Please mark the applicable option:
I will happily fill out a survey even if I'm not paid.
I will happily fill out a survey but only if I get some reward.
I will never fill out a survey.

Someone please explain to me the fascination some people have in defining a boundary between digital and traditional art. I've never been able to understand it.

I think, for some unenlightened folk, the fascination stems from believing
they can create masterpieces, quicker and easier using digital tools. Coupled with
the "threat" of digital technology overwhelming the need to retain/create hardcopies
of books and paintings. In other words it stems from hype/naiveté and perhaps even
some kind of weird justification that some folks think they need when believing they
must pursue one or the other.
At least, in my opinion.
People like to categorize things in neat little boxes. And then fight over which box is better.
You think that simulating painting is the same as actually painting? Because its not and it won't ever be. One is real, with real manipulation of materials one is not. You can't hold a digital painting or hold the components a digital painting are made from because they are not real. Just like looking at a photo of the grand canyon is not the same as going to the grand canyon. Just like watching porn is not the same as having sex with another human being. You only get a small fraction of the experience.

I feel like this survey is fishing for approval of Digital painting, that is how it reads to me anyway.
The concept that something is a physical thing that exists in the world that you could touch (even if security guards would haul you off if you did) is a powerful and universal idea. It doesn't make traditional better, but I do think it is possible that for some people the day may never come where a physical canvas is less impressive than a digital image of equal quality.
The upshot for digital is that it has one less step for art to be used on the computer.
We live in a time when you get to choose the tool you prefer, that's about all there is to it. The rest is for generations long after we are dead to worry about![]()
