life drawing from workshop and study on dore's illustration from dante's divine comedy.

been going to workshops and took 2 beginning life drawing since 3 years ago (2009)... with little improvement. i do remember my pictures used to look more like human, now they're more like random lines. any help is welcome.

want to take classes at watt's when i finish school in a few years (i'll be like... 30... so worried that i'd be too old to get any good by then)

torso studies from bridgeman + dore

- tendencies to contour the item in imagined 3-d space with same line weight makes drawings cluttered-looking.
- need to better represent the symmetry of the body when it's highly contorted.
- need better designs.

any help is appreciated,

very ugly lines, cannot design at all. need to draw more to get back in shape again.

first and foremost need to demonstrate well-articulation of the major masses.

totally forgot who the model was. felt kindda awkward each time asked.

packaging x calligraphics. charcoal pencils (higher friction and darkness) from terry.

too much details, but the result was sort of fun and hectic looking; one of those puzzles where only a few pieces of the negative space is given and you have to figure out the actual shape. (nice way of saying none of them looked like humans is that it's a replica of "nude descending stairs").

fails: non-even tones and too much details
wins: lame dancing routing at the horse.

trying to draw like mr.orbik

1-20 min, unknown model (seen 3 times before), she's super sick, and we finished at 0030am. afraid to ask for name she looked pissed.

many construction lines. made special effort to practice drawing straight lines and regularized polynomial curves.


shorts poses: the construction lines were tiresome to draw in some cases:
1. rhythmic lines were really fun and easy to draw, and intuitive (although tended messiness in previous attempts)
2. great care now has been taken to make these construction/rhythmic lines more "presentable" and precise as oppose to just physical enjoyment, perhaps that's why it's more painful.
3. perhaps this is part of the rigor route i can follow --- although painful now, may more easily extend the muscular exercise to precision.
4. the perspective lines/ellipses were somewhat agreeable +1.
5. may switch back to calligraphic lines for finishes after the construction lines were down for the basic parts.
6. need dark lines
7. need really really light lines

longs:
need to learn how to draw heads. did a pencil drawing, was fun --- how smooth and fast and light pencils are.

life drawing 2013/2/4 at revolver

wanted to continue orbik/acosta style, but felt hands being dirty (with the lines, not enough practice?). changed to somewhat more calligraphic style, but trying to maintain as much orbikity as possible. completely lost any acosta controls. blame jumping in without warming up (spent most of the time sharpening a completely new pencil into a new...stub)

group works for the 20min's with 5 of us for one and 4 of us with the last two. 4-minute-seat-change's and 2-minute-seat-change's. went with clockwise, shudda also played with C'C's. quite fun, but the effect was very "averaging" all the drawings of the same pose turn out to look like an arithmetic average of our drawings. the ink/blacks were just too dominating. could switch to crayons/color-pencils/pencils for all. also did not have any break-through ideas after 3 rotations. could potentially play with fixed style/color-scheme etc.

should've done mannekin drawings to get back in shape after the break. for now the figures looked lopsided and poorly composed. after that need to get into body planes, since so far they looked senselessly wiggled. also dont know how to get nice texture from the charcoal for shading. i can never get the nice flat strokes that i see all the other artists are doing.

cch thursdays 5,7,10,20 mins -- 2hours

did some doodling in the first hour realized my male figures were really really messy so went back to manikin drawings for the 2x10, 20 poses.

you have really lovely pencil lines, don't worry so much about them! They have a nice flow to them, keep it up, especially tonal work, thats the most important thing to understand if and when you move on to painting
