Just checking in on this concept and I must say it sounds like a great idea. I joined a while ago but I've yet to actually begin exploring the community. Maybe we could get something going? If we could get a few more people.

I'd be keen on joining a study group. sounds like fun. I've seen a few groups start up and fall right through after several weeks though.

if we can agree on like a certain format and like Turpentine said, if we can get a few more people committed enough, i think we can make it work.

Awesome If we can get a few more people then we can get this newbie sketch group started I'm not exactly sure on how the format would go, any ideas??

Well, if any of you would be interested, I'd be willing to do a one-day study thing based on Jack Hamm's Drawing Landscapes and Scenery. I've been meaning to review the page about good space division.

After that, I'll probably be off in the aethers again. :p But you could keep posting in the same thread. Depends on what y'all are looking for.

EDIT: Shoot. Nevermind. It looks like I'm going to be busier than I thought for the next few days. :/

I have no idea, but I imagine there are a number of artists that are universally accepted as good sources to learn by. Burne Hogarth seems to be one (By all means correct me if I'm wrong though)

Perhaps we could pick an artist, and spend a period of time studying their works, something they're known for or maybe even a specific subject they've written on in a book and then compare our sketches, ending the period in a "final" drawing employing what we learned.

Howdy! I'm a total newb, too. From another thread by another newb, a book was mentioned: Betty Edwards - Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. She also has a workbook to go with it. I've just got both and started reading through it today. There are a number of exercises to do with it, but I don't know yet the format and all that. Plus it might be more beginner than many of you are thinking - I'm a TOTAL noob at drawing. I have all of two or three weeks behind me.

Anyway, that's just one idea. But I'm interested in seeing what happens and, depending on what y'all decide to go with, I may join in.

Should we maybe have a weekly/daily topic/subjects to work on and have assignments to turn in by the end of the week/day?

@Turpentine selecting an artist each week and studying him/her sounds like the right way to go. so maybe week one, we can work on Loomis and basic figure structure and then the week after work on interpreting form and so on and so forth?

Loomis sounds good, most if not all of his works are available online for free as well. This thread serves as our growing little hub but when we have a group (If we have a group) in what format should we meet, communicate?

Perhaps a thread in the Critique center and WIP showcase subforum?

It would definitely be useful for me if we can work through something that's easily available online. Bookstores where I am are not, shall we say, plentifully stocked.

Critique or Sketchbook subforum. Either of those would work I think. We could always create a social group but i think that doesn't allow non-members to post so we won't be getting feedback from the wider community.

Or we could just make a mess out of this one

I think having one or two assignments to complete a week would be good. Every day is too often, I think - I suspect too many would get behind too quickly and give up. Yeah, and let's be honest - I'm counting myself in that. Less frequently than once a week and it's too easy to forget and check in.

As for where, I have no idea. I signed up yesterday. I don't really have the lay of the land yet.

I think it would be useful if it could be someplace where other newbies can easily find us, though. I understand your concern, M-Min, about nonmembers not being able to post to a group, but I wonder if that might be the most logical place anyway? That's one of the first places I went looking for a newbies group.

I think the critique center is the best place for us to go, but I'm open to suggestions since I don't have a great lay of the land either. Then again we COULD just use this thread, change the title to something like "The ____ Study Group"

If a mod thinks its not appropriate they could just move it I suppose, so no harm in that

I'm good with anything though it would be good to have a thread where it would get lost under a pile of other threads

and I'm liking the idea of studying the work of artists such as Loomis, and perhaps have a 'topic of the week' for example: week 1. basic shapes, 2. bone structure 3. muscles 4. head then even on perspective etc.

I think it's important just to get people motivated and wanting to draw, that's what I really need at the moment, and for a lot of newbies joining and feeling intimidated to improve ^^

We have 8 people so far yaay!

Let's just start it here then and if we have to, open up a new thread in the sketchbook forum? What topic should we work on first this week?

Looked like basic bone structures was suggested. To that effect, I offer up a series of tutorials from CGcookie.com that starts with the legs and progresses to arms, torso(male and female), and ends with hands.

    The more the merrier, Azimuth.

So, all y'all (and no, I'm not a southerner), are we at the point of making a firm decision of what we want to start with? Do we need to vote?

Well, until we do have a vote of some kind, or until someone disagrees with me - How about we start slow and aim to show at least 1 set of our very best:
    ------------
Front, side, and back view arms - Bone
Front, side, and back view legs - Bone

Front, side, and back view arms - Muscle
Front, side, and back view legs - Muscle
    -------------
Do as many sets as you like, but try and get 1 good set of each to show by next Wednesday the 22nd.

I was also curious if anyone would be interested in starting a bit of a skype circle. Doesn't need to be voice/calls (I like listening to music while I draw as I'm sure many do), but maybe a group conversation where we can hot-join and talk about what we're doing and maybe get quicker responses to questions. If that sounds at all interesting to any of you, hop on skype and add 'Harkaibijar'. Mention something about Conceptart.org or studygroup so I can recognize ya'.
