    Mokuu's energetic sketchbook

Anything goes, critics can be as harsh as they can, its all clean as long as its helpful : )

-Character design (my avatar) under construction to eventually be used as a model sheet for a portfolio.

    -Facial expression brainstorming

More to come as the day goes by, thank you in advance : )

    Very very lively sketches!

On the first image, the head is shifted --> a little, the chin isn't in line with the sternum and naval (but close!) His left hand is also bigger in comparison to the right...

Welcome to CA! Keep it up, these are real cool.

IanE: Thanks alot ill have to watchout with the proportions next attempts, tough what do you think of the character from a design point of view. I kinda wanted to represent energy and wilderness but i dont think i can do much, pose-wise, when ill have to do a model sheet. And the character is around 5 to 6.

Here are a few thumbnails of a storyboard i have to present within the same portfolio:

Set for panel 1: The boy finds a box and gets curious.

Set for panel 2: The curious one gets fustrated that he can't open the box

Set for panel 3: Joy enlighen the boy's face as the box opens

Set for panel 4: The boy has a terrible shock when he finds out what is in the box

Im pretty proud of the last ones, seems i got my gears up but they still dont seem alright, well one from each pack of 6 will be chosen yet it doesnt seem right..

Energy and wilderness.... when I hear that I think lush foliage and lots of sun... I guess that means stick him in a healthy bright environment? Looks a little older than 5-6... maybe 9-11, but I could be totally off since I'm never around little kids... Especially when he's making that angry face in the 5th cell of the 2nd panel set. But all in all, it's a rough idea, and an extremely good one... play with it and see what happens!

    Good luck.

Ill have a play with the proportions then, maybe a bigger head and thinner body or using balls and cylinders only then see what comes out of it, ill post updates later today.

Wow I love your facial expressions, I think they portray the moods well. This character reminds me a lot of Tomba (I think thats what it was called), from the old playstation game. Keep up the good work, I think this will look great in your portfolio.

Thanks alot, i got inspired by the character as well, i always wanted another 2d version of that game to come out but the company vanished as the ps2 came.

Pre-final character expression sheet, ill need to work the angry and neutral some more, i cant seem to find an energetic neutral face... Woulda posted the model sheets too but i found out i gotta redo them. Better us the lightbox now.

Ouch long time i havent posted. I cant show the work ive done in the life drawing workshop since the "expensive" paper is over there...the teacher wants us to draw our big projects on it since its easier to erase. Anyhow here are a few sketches/wannabeillustrations ill have to color, ill see if i can scan and upload a few gestures later today.

Mostly gift arts and attempt at compositions.

Phew, after the whole portfolio stress and my sudden ddissapearence and yadiyadiyada. I got accepted, time to work harder, screw characters, time for life drawing. Here's some gestures from the 4 days. Best out of many tough.

Id be very grateful to anyone who would give me some critism on them. Thanks : )

    Mokuu thank you for posting.

I love the characters you have made up but most of all I lover your drawing style.

I like the looseness of the lines while they are somewhat loose and organic yet the still very tight and clean.

Your style reminds me of what I want more of my drawings to look like.

My only problems with your work is that I want to see more keep'em coming so that I may ber inspired to post some drawing.

Another thing is I want to ask you what do you use to draw I notice that you are not using graphite it seems to be colored pencils which is very nice because I prefer to use color pencil over graphite to draw.

Again I thank you for these drawings and keep'em coming.

Ack thanks alot and sorry for the lack of posting. I always hit those brick walls i name " Anatomy versus style" I know i have to quit the chicken lines and move my whole arm to feel the flow of the movement (which is hard when it comes to me creating the movements.) but i also have to know my anatomy very well. For the pencil, i use prismacolor col-erase or verithin since they barely smudge which leaves me a big break if i start going crazy with the lines.

I gotta thank ya for most of it, something just happened back there which kinda opened my eyes.

Weekly gestures during this hellish week of overtime.

Off to be a gesture ninja for another week, i posted some torso studies in the critique section and in my blog, no need to spam CA with em some more.

Torso correcton time then one more week of torso studies and here comes the arm studying week.

Crunch time at school has got me shut off from the world, 1 more month of hard work and its home free and animation parties. But for now i might as well fake being an illustrator and get the paper.

    Recent ink project:

    Final First semester project:

    Another first semester project:

    Recent stuff :

Might upload the small amount of life drawing i did this second semester, funds are low and time is short with 10 classes, i hope to become active again as soon as the semester is over. Thanks for the help guys !

Ohh man I love the energy that comes from this sketchbook, your emotions are great, you really have a grasp on the character you are designing, The way you draw him, it seems that anyone who sees the art instantly becomes acquainted with your character, you represent his personality very well

    keep it up man
and if you have a second it would be nice to hear what you think of my SB

Man, illustration and design is messing me up right now, too much copying and not enough drawing. Anyway getting back into the groove at the moment and working on various commissions and comic pages concepts to dive into what i really want.

    Current comission:

I need the cash to pay for more life drawing sessions, had not beta resting this summer so no money this semester. And now, my main concentration is gonna be animation and concept art, enough with the reference copying school imposes and time to use em to enhance and learn drawing techniques.

Max critique level is always welcomed.

Looking good man but you should try some less extreme perspectives Its ok to have foreshortening and everything but dont be sticking something in the viewers face every picture
That said you art looks good and I like its ebergy

Heeeey, hello from Void City! You have great inks and faces and gestures, but I think you should lose some lines. I mean, your drawings are all built on simple shapes, so why not keep it simple? Nice improvements! I see a lot of progress!

fab.K Ill try and go on a sketch rush-Brush-MarkerorWater color spree this week.

    eminkey2003 Yo voider !

Tough call on the figures, i wanna see how far i can push em without completely breaking them. All that to use the little ive learned in life drawing to enhance what ive got. So far, it never feels enough lol, its like a crave for more anyhow if i ever get inside the city, we'll bout and have a blast!

Hey Mokuu, although I see you everyday of the week, I still think that you deserve a proper critique

rule #1: DRAW DRAW DRAW! you don't draw nearly enough! live models, drawing from observation, drawing what you see and not what you think you see.

hey try to draw objects first without a line of action, as realistically as you can. and when you have drawn it realistically enough and without exaggerations, then try redrawing it with a line of action and exaggerations. I think the details on it that you will observe will help you make you final animation hyper-real.

I have more to say but, the teacher is watching me
    see ya soon!
