whooooa how did i miss this thread for so long? everything, concepts composition, color, linework.. all so so def
line work reminds me of Phil Hale and Bill Sienkiewicz
dakoscwash > i feel at lost for words quite often myself, that's why i draw more than i talk
jrr > i'll trade a book for your hi-rez collection of natalie pics (i need to complete mine)...or are you into kiera right now ?![]()
brkofdon > thanks. as for tutorials, i have some step by steps that i need to comment and upload. i wouldn't call them tutorials because they are not intended to show 'how to do things' or 'the good way'. i'm still looking for a good process myself.
About the brushes, i'd say the textured brushes are quite tricky, it's like lens flares or volumetric lighting back in the days. it can be useful to add some mood but it's pretty much all about details. imo, details will usually make a bad picture look worse and a good picture look better. once i understood that structure is always more important than details, i think my work was intantly better than before.
i have a 10mn xvid that shows a typical speedpainting using my favorite brush. i'll try to find some web space to upload it next week.
and for the perspective scene, i didn't actually draw the construction lines but i used some dots and points to get the overall vanishing lines while i was drawing. in that case, i started from the foreground (the monitors and pole stuff on the left) and then go slowly toward the vanishing point (toward the right side in that case), building the scene as blocks and 3d layers in your head. once you have some practice with perspective, it's easy to draw just 4 dots marking each corner of a bounding box instead of drawing the whole bounding box, then once you can figure out the bounding box, you just have to find the correct way to fit your shape/volume
Ra Havok, Chaotic Logic, Tomasis, Prostate Sunrise, Pichuerca, RedRook, Dns2k, Bwkeough, Fozzybar > thanks a lot ! you keep me motivated. glad you liked the new batch.
Crunch > about patterns, i have to confess that i used them a lot some years back when it was the huge thing in european illustration...everybody was adding flat textures evrywhere. everyfuckingpicture was looking like a bad Klimt or even worse, a bad Designers Republic or Buro Destruct ripoff (i'm so glad my backup hd crashed, so no one can actually see the pics i did back then). It became a gimmicky thing, a cheap way to add 'style' but it just loosed all meaning in itself at the same time. i think that pattern stuff works, for sure. but it has been used so many times and so badly at times that it's kind of cliché to use that. so why did i use that again ? i don't know, i guess i'm just a weak person and a bad designer after all.
Also, i'm very suspicious when people talk about 'style'. To me 'style' is just how you manage to deal with you weaknesses and flaws. As i'm not able to draw something accurately, i'll try to find a graphical 'trick' to make that thing understandable and 'stylish'. so basically, it's more like a weakness than a strength imo. Only a very few people have actually enough technical abilities to 'choose' their style (i think sienkiewicz and mignola are 'choosers', lucky bastards !). hmm, anyway. i guess i should just draw and not try to elaborate some shitty theory about style... sorry for that, i'm going senile.
Main Loop > thanks. like a lot of people, i've been really influenced by Bill S at a time, he is still my favorite artist (the only 2 original works I've bought in my whole life are from sienkiewicz). I discovered Phil Hale's work only recently, awesome style, definetly one of the most impressive artists i've seen in the past few years, and he has become one of my favorite artists too.
the new batch is weaker. testing things here and there.

ohh.. killer ink drawings...I really like the jumping martial artist, that one adidas shoe, the whole pose is so elegant, I can hear the fabric snapping... a sweaty gi feels exactly the way that looks!
I have to get back into ink, I used to love the way india ink flows and soaks into paper. (I have to get back into martial arts, but it'll be years before I have enough time for that!).
thanks for your comments and thoughts on art and design, they confirmed and expanded some recent ideas of mine.
the third from the last image, is the color spray paint or digital noise/filter?

Man, I really love this thread. Hardcore, I'm so impressed by the way you use ink. It feels so gritty and in your face. Stark, sort of. I don't know, just bad ass. All I can say is keep posting as often as you can. I really enjoy each update.
LOL, that little fairy looking up at the big guy.
Killer updates.
good to see lots of hpx arts.
tried to color one that I enjoyed, hope I didn't poop it up too much.
hope it doesnt clutter up your fine thread, lemme know I'll chop 'er out.
MAN! Your style kicks ass! I love the gritty feel of your stuff!
Keep rockin' man!

Hey HardcorepixxX
man seeing your sketchbook was one of the many highlights for me in Austin. i love how all of your sketches look really sketchy but still show so much info and how they look like they were laid down with care. after looking over this thread over and over again you've inspired me to start doodling in pen and marker. keep it up![]()
wow pixx really
nice colour utternuts btw
i think if those DBZ suckers would let you draw dbz next year you win an Oscar !!! you were one of the first artists before i started to draw that made me drop my jaw and while looking thrue you stuff on your site keep saying WOOw !!
hpx-------i'm watmough at sijun.....i love your stuff
u dont happen to know any tattooers in paris,do ya(tin tin, bruno kea)?
and ......you french guys........................i wish i was french
man ive been watching your stuff since you showed up here eons ago. Today im looking at your sketchbook and even more important than the fact that it is impressive as hell, it is inspiring. You gave me the kick in the nutz i needed to start applying myself.
thanks
BLAST ON YOU!![]()
these last 2 updates are killer, man. i dont have anything to crit other than continue to experiment with things and push yourself. ..maybe try some more acrylic and oil painting. its always great to see an update from you.. ..man, i feel inspired now
hpx + pen + ink/marker = hotness
damn yes, your sketch thread is the mind-boggling shit.
furious lines of fury! and that subway scene rocks too.
Need more updates! Can't let it slip off into the shuffle, you're one of my favorite artists here.![]()
i finally have some time to update this thread. hope you will like the new batch. mostly doodles. next time, i'll try to post more designs and research sketches.
bwkeough, thanks. glad you found something interesting. also, the pic was heavily contrasted in photoshop, the spray paint effect is due to the scrappy scanner i use
syrogen, thanks mate
main loop, i'm a lucky keeper of 2 pieces from sienkiewicz : a nice elektra sketch and one of the watercolor published in 'pre-cursor'. i love them![]()
the black marker is a copiic. i used to have pantone trias, but i kind of like the copiic better.
willschnevel, i mainly use one of the standard brushes (a dual brush 69 pix that is located in the natural brush or dry media set), with opacity pressure on. I also use the basic round with opacity pressure and a round textured with line width pressure. throughout the years, i've made some custom brushes also, but i think the basic round and a textured brush are more than enough.
skank, i drink coke.
cue, in case you're a girl with big boobs, we can continue this discussion further. if not, then, errr..... NO
josef k, thanks man. glad the pics made you want to draw more.
i am, thank you very much.
buzzz3d,i liked that pic too.
utternuts, nice manfunny thing to see this in color. your choice of palette is so different from what i use/thought and it works really well imo. it's like seeing it from a new angle, thanks ! also i now see where the lines and shapes should have been different
dcept, thanks !
intern, hope you'll have as much fun as i had with the markers and ink.
red rook, thanks !
eew, actually i like the dbz stuff. vegeta is still one of my all-time favorite characters. and thanks for the nice words also.
knowmind/watmough, love your latest pics ! about the taooers, no i don't know any of them personnaly. why ?
nardfrog, thanks. glad to know this thread is a bit useful to you.
metalwinds, hey man. i'd love to get back to the acrylics thing ! so different from photshop and at the same, there are direct links, weird. i'll just have to find people to finish the real job while i paint.
steak-tron, thanks, love your sketches and hatching technique man. makes me want to work more on the hatching and light/shadows.
sinix, sorry for the waitlast month was one of the busiest month i had this year. but i guess it's a good thing after all. hope you'll like the update.

thank you for everything dude, when i get a g/f can she have your baby?![]()
what can I say man, your dumps are the shit. em.. your shitting gold that is.
It's funny you mention the hatching, I was motivated to push that further after looking at your sketches. I thought, don't worry about the blends just put em down and keep putting them down to build it up. Constantly feeling the drawing out and re-evaluating it as it's done. I was really inspired by your demo in Austin (man-transvestite-cyborg) . so thanks man, I'm a fan!
Damn, that stuff is good!![]()

hello H.pixxX,
what i enjoy most about your work is your use of a very powerful element in art that i am calling impact.
what made you different in my eyes is your bravery in content. seeing your artwork inspires me to release that bold energy, inside of me, that one allows to be censored in order to be mannerly so not to offend others.your artwork has this wild energy about it, i love it and feed off of it.
just too fucking good![]()

I like the Adidas. Nice touch.
your very fluent with photoshop! how many brushes did you use on that last sketch? do you ever use the blend tool at all? do you put pen pressure on the foreground/background jitter in the color dynamics..? you get some nice color blends in your images..just curious..ok

Harcore, you are getting a lot more *expressive* with your work.Great to check out your updates again.
![]()
cant wait to hang out with you again dood...drinking buddy haha!
i love this thread.. . you always have something new and sweet going on. i need to work on being looser when sketching. .. .something you do very well. hope to see you again in san fran.. .
Love that last one.
Dont got time right now to look through the hole book but do you ever draw with pencil?
Btw you say you draw often, you dont got any tips how to get from the computer and start practicinmg anatomy heads etc.?
keep it up
brkofdon > on that last sketch, I used 4 brushes (a basic round w/ opacity pressure, a dual brush with opacity pressure and a textured brush that you can see on the upper left corner, and a big blurry round to add a fog like effect on the finished piece). i don't use any blend tool, but the brushes all have the opacity pressure on, so i use the pressure to blend the colors, like you would do with color pencils. just use big fat brush tips and apply the brush softly.
i'd say that i work 90% of my pictures using one or two brushes. then add details and textures here and there using customs brushes when needed.
and no background/foreground jitter, i find it to hard to control. the opacity pressure works nice for me.
iFLUFFED > haha, thanks !
nardfrog > thanks man. children work is bad but i still love my jordan XIII 98.
Targete > yo JP ! i wish i could have more energy in real life, right now, i have the flu or something haha.
liam c > thanks for bumping the thread
cateaic > i personnaly don't like to have a look at other art-related things right before i start to draw, expect for porn maybe. but if it works good with you, then i'm glad i can help a bit.
van > more expressive ?.. well maybe. i felt like i was getting stuck in the same patterns lately, so i tried to work differently. it's like getting used to things and repeating the same bad habits at times. anyway, thanks man.
rich > haha, same here bro. great work on the flash website btw
metalwinds > hmm, funny you say that. i think i'm often too loose, so i tried to get more details after i saw coro's and wes sketchbooks. but it's really like fighting against old habits. after a while, i usually fuck up everything when i add more details. i envy people who have that ability to add more content and goodness with time, since i'm totally unable to do that.
Profil > i sometimes use pencil, but not that much. i prefer ink or ballpoints because it's more like all or nothing, pencils have too many subtlety, gradients and such. i'm not a very suble drawer.
as far as tips, just buy a sketchbook and go draw in a museum. sculptures, people. do lots of different sketches (crowds, close ups, etc...), try to keep away from the eraser, i think doing a lot of doodles is more useful than doing one nice looking sketch. it's like playing a rpg. you need to level up by sketching all kinds of monsters. more or less.

Time again to post something in here...
I just looked through the whole thread yesterday...i really think that you have some very special skills combined in your art...
you are strong in line-drawings
you have awesome understanding of color
your rendering skills are unbelievable
your compositions are great
your design is superb
your ideas are fresh and never ending
and you are sooo fast
HPX - i am rarely saying this to other people, but i believe that you have a very special mix of skills and whoever will have you in his team should appreciate his luck!!!
Continue to amaze us...you, one of the best artists in my eyes...
oh, and this faces on the last batch are really weird and nice to look at![]()
