@anivy- Thanks alot! Environments are still incredibly intimidating. I really need to buckle down and do some ref pieces. I think I might start off with some really loose speed paintings to and see where it goes.

Just went through all three seasons of Deadwood last week. Such an awesome show, its a shame its cancelled. Anyways, here is Doctor Cochran, one of my favorite characters.
Meh. Super tired tonight. Did lots of scribbles, but they were all pretty terrible. This one was at least sort of interesting. Some kind of weird landscape. Hopefully I'll be up for something better tomorrow.
Another tired night. Just spitting out random scribbles. Again, nothing spectacular, but I figured I'd post anyways. My lines feel way less precise on the tablet lately, which is really aggravating.
Pretty tired again tonight, so I forced some stuff out. Felt like I got a little more brush control this time around though, so not as horrible as the last post. Just doodles tho again.
Wanted to draw a creepy kid with black eyes, so, here ya go. Creepy kid with black eyes.![]()
My first traditional watercolor painting! It was lots of fun and a great learning experience.
Forced myself to do an environment. I had been sketching ideas for a sort of space outpost. I wanted the planet to have a thick looking atmosphere and a hot, arid terrain. Something that would look far too extreme for humans to live on without protection. It was fun, and really good practice. When I get a chance, I might post some of the sketches I did to get a feel for what I wanted to capture in the outpost structure.
Figured I would post the preliminary sketches of the outpost thing I just put up. I had lots of ideas and was trying to hash out a particular feel.
Just saw this sketch in my old book when I was posting the outpost sketches. Completely forgot about it. I've got to start just working in one book and finishing it. Anyways, I thought it was sorta interesting. I'd like to do more semi-finished pencil/ink pieces. But then I need to practice environments. And I need to do studies. And I need to practice watercolor. And I haven't even started doing any acrylic. And I need to do more mechs and robots... why can't days be 48 hours?
I'm doing some work for a friend for Christmas. They wanted two shots of Master Chief in a poster kind of style. Anyways, I figured I'd post some wip pictures.
Been working on this off and on at work. Still not finished, but it's close to completion. I loaded up the pencil drawing of rogue I did from waaay back and have been playing with it in photoshop. I have to do it with a mouse at work so, it takes forever, but it kills the time and is good practice.
Update on the Master Chief. Just tightened up some lines tonight, and cropped the pic a bit. Also, I noticed when I was loading up the rogue stuff two things. Number one, after sitting back and looking at it, her boobs are ridiculous. Definitely gonna tone those down tomorrow. Two, I always intended for the pic to be really bright, almost glowing. But I think that unless you look at it really closely, it doesn't really look right. I think maybe the values are bouncing around too much. I don't know. Maybe I will tone that down a bit too. Anyways, g'night conceptart.
I worked on this today and toned things down a bit and made an effort to make the suit look at least a little rubbery. I think I'm gonna call it quits on it for now.
Dug this old environment piece up.
Finally finished one of the master chiefs. I'll be glad to get these done so I can go back to concentrating on concept stuff.
Your pencil rendering technique is wonderful! maybe if you use the same technique in digital with b/w it will convey your values better on the rogue piece
! keep up the great work sir! I know what you mean bout wanting 48 hrs per day >_<
@ Nerferinn - I just started doing color this year, and I've had a huge problem with making things muddy. I need to stop being a lazy bastard and do some studies. If I got some under my belt I feel like I'd have a better grasp of value in color. Thanks for stopping by page!
Some random sketches from last night.
I was playing with texture on these. Still learning photoshop with all it's crazy brushes and layers. It's really interesting what kinds of effects you can get. The underlying line work for these pieces are pretty underwhelming, as I was basically just wanting something to experiment with.
I took nerferinn's advice to heart and went back to the rogue piece. I tried to think about how I would shade the face if I were doing it in pencil. I think it really helped. I went back over the body too, but I haven't really finished that. I'll post an update of that later.
Another tired night. Not much to post. I was playing with this off and on. Meh.
Hey Chevy, you've got great variety in your sketchbook (characters, environments etc). Also, great improvements on the Rogue piece! Looking forward to seeing more updates![]()
@ simiansmash -Thanks alot! I've been trying to break out of just drawing characters because that's all I use to do. I just took a look at your sketchbook. I really like your character designs! There is a nice stylized feel that I think really works. Keep it up mate!
Here is an update to my last master chief commission. Hopefully, I'll be finished tonight.
Finally finished this. Not 100% happy with it.
Sketches for this weeks chow. My first time participating. I'm excited!
i really really like the chow, it has an mmo feel but with your touch in it, also the way you handle lightning with pencil its awesome, i will sutdy you thoroughly![]()
my sketchbook! Drawing like a maniac!!
My Blog
Destroy your weaknesses! theres nothing more to it! stop bitching grab that pencil and sketch Away!
You did improved a lot in such a short time, just look at your
first page sketches, and compare the latest, there are surely improvements
and the real concept art spirit will get into you for Christmas. What I noticed
on your graphite pencil sketches is that most of them, let’s say eighty percent
of the uploaded are heavily lack of any contrast. That could be of your scanning
method, or you ain’t using softer graphite like 3B for darker areas and harder,
like HB or 2H for lighter areas. The eyes are mainly the most important part
of the portraits or any character drawings, so leave the shiniest things and for
the biggest contrast for the eyes. Eyes, the mirror of the soul, something like that.
Your digital skills has improved just as you graphite ones. I was observing a
bit more the “Maste Chief” space marine kind of painting and the female rogue.
You definitely did a good job on them, and you achieved some new skills.
The rogue female is oversaturated, that bright green kills the viewers eye,
making the piece not totally likable. You tend to oversaturate your colors
on digital paintings. The lavacave environment and the soldierreflect1 is
also heavily oversaturated. More painting and referencing other artists
could help with these issues. Don’t be afraid to color pick from other
pieces also for now. They say it’s like cheating, but it’s surely not
if you are in a study and learning phase. So do whatever it takes
to improve and to understand things your own way. Will not
write more for now, don’t want to confuse you. I like
what you did till now and what you achieved, you just
keep on going like this and don’t give up. You can
accomplish anything what you put your mind to.
@lionheartgfx - Thanks alot! Your pencils are coming along nicely in your sketchbook too! Keep it up!
@ltpliskken - Thanks so much for the thoughtful comment. After looking back at them, you are right, the colors are very saturated. I definitely need to do more reference stuff. And the pencils, I have to admit I don't think I have ever used an artist style graphite pencil. I have almost always used a regular pump pencil. Anything that happened to be lying aroundI should invest in at least a darker pencil because it is definitely making my values blend. I'm a regular visitor to your page, so thanks for stopping by!
These are some crap doodles I did today at work. Hopefully tonight, I'll be able to do some work on the chow.
Almost forgot, did a cover design for a local magazine. It's a native american magazine, and they wanted a christmasy cover that was native inspired. They needed it within a day, and I had to really wrack my brains to come up with anything at all. This is what I finished tho. It's a dreamcather made snowflakes![]()
