My wife recently told me that my sketchbook thread title made me sound like more of a douche than I actually am. Until I figure out how insulted I should be, I'll keep it as Chevy's sketches.

Hello everyone. After hours and hours of viewing the incredible work in these forums, I've decided to throw in my own stuff. I'm a lazy bastard and I don't practice as much as I should, but that's a pretty common vice. Anyways, I hope you enjoy my thread, and I will try to update as much as possible.

This image is a painting I did in Painter of a relative who passed this year. It is dear to me, and I poured countless hours into it.

Here are some recent sketches I've done. One of these days I'm going to stop using random pump pencils I find around the office and buy some graphite and charcoal.

Strange. After scanning some images to post here, I realize that I tend to sketch things on the edges of the paper. It's really weird. Maybe I just got used to doodling on the edges of my school work and it stuck with me. In any case, I'll try to remember that and draw in the middle.

Here are a few I did a couple of weeks ago. You'll notice I experimented with adding some ink. The cheap gel pens I have lying around apply really easy, but they make really big lines. It's hard to keep them sharp. It was fun though!

Just found this pic of a Draugr I drew way back when Skyrim was still taking over my life! That game was ridiculously buggy, but ridiculously fun too.

This will probably be my last upload today. I have a ton of sketches lying around, but the majority of them are completely random, or unfinished, or really really old. I might go through them later and pick out the better ones.

These are some paintings I've done in Painter. I just started about three months ago with color and it has been REALLY challenging. But it's been fun too. With time, and plenty of inspiration from this forum, I hope to get better and perhaps one day break into some actual concept work.

All these are speed paintings, done in 1-2 hours. I want to do some that are faster though, maybe 30-40min tops. I really need to practice brush economy.

Okay... THIS will be my last post today, I promise.

I pretty much just draw characters and I've been trying to break myself from that routine. A few months ago I started a ref pic of an old tractor, and after several weeks of going back and forth with it, I ended up adding a background and doing far more work on it than I ever intended. Anyways, I liked how it came out, so, here it is.

Here are some speedies I did tonight in painter. I've been looking at all the loose and wild pieces here and it inspired me to loosen myself up. I just went crazy with the shapes and let my hand form things randomly that I thought would look good. Some things worked great, some things didn't work at all. But that's what ctrl/z is for! Everything didn't come out perfect, but it was still lots of fun.

This is quite a good first page of your sketchbook so far. Your pencil work so far is fantastic, has a unique look to it. Your colors get a little muddy in your digital work though.

Thanks Xamllew! I agree, my digital work with colors still need lots of work. All I ever worked with is pencil, and transitioning those skills to color has been quite the challenge. I feel like with a reference, I'm not so bad, but drawing from imagination makes me fall back on my pencil work, which doesn't necessarily translate to color so well. It's 'ok', but definitely needs improvement. I need to practice practice practice!

This was a super quick painting I did tonight. Did quite a few, but didn't really like any of them. This one is 'ok'. It's pretty loose, but, that's what I was going for. I've been trying to practice weird shaped ships. This one isn't anything special really, but it was good practice with the tilted angle and what not.

I was messing around with the wash brush. It 'sort' of works. But after experimenting, I think it should only be used sparingly. Anyways, I don't have much else to post so I'll throw this up.

@kevin - Thanks mate! I'm trying to practice as much as I can. All I've ever done is pencil work, and it shows in my colored works. I need to do more reference pieces.

Did a ref piece a few weeks ago. I forced myself to only spend 15min on it. I think I went over by 1 or 2, but I was pretty loyal to it. As you can see, I ran out of time and couldn't do the sky or much on the background. It was a fun practice piece.

@cabbage - Thanks! Ships are really interesting to me. Pretty soon I want to practice mech and ship designs. Doing it in color just seems so daunting right now though with my lack of skill in color.

Here is the first interior I've ever done. I did it about a month ago. I didn't really like it then and I don't really like it now. It feels... I don't know. Just sort of flat and uninteresting. It was good to force myself to do it though, and I feel slightly less intimidated after doing it. After I do some ref stuff, I think I will take a stab at it again.

Quick little ship design today. Figured I would post the line drawing and the sorta finished version with some inking. The lines looks more squiggly than I intended. I'm not sure if its the scanner settings or what. I'll have to look into it a repost if I figure it out.

Was playing around with silhouettes tonight. This is the only one really worth posting. No reference was used.

You definitely have some solid stuff in here. Your pencil works are very good, and the tractor painting sticks out especially. Nice work!

@Zombie- Thanks! I must have worked on that tractor piece for a good month before I considered it complete.

Also, the lady I just posted above isn't really a silhouette. It's just a black and white portrait.

Been drawing a bit this weekend, but nothing is coming out very good. Juices just don't seem to be flowing. Maybe I need some inspiration. This is the only thing half decent that has come out. I had the idea of a pod hanging with some attachments. I think it came out looking a little ship-like though. Oh well.

Been pretty slack lately with drawing, so in an effort to keep this sketchbook updated I'll post some of my older sketches.

Here's the first one. If I remember correctly i used some references of a younger Robert De Niro.

This one is actually only five or six months old. As I recall, I was trying to make a slightly overweight female monk, since I had always done extremely skinny or fit women. However, somewhere along the line it just didn't sit well with me, so I scrapped the idea and with with a slightly overweight hunter. Which basically meant just throwing some arrows behind her It doesn't exactly work. I think her hood is WAY too small for the size of her head, but whatever.

Here are some relatively old pieces. Inspired by starcraft. They are probably 4-5 years old. Looking back, it's obvious I wasn't practicing. I mean, the lines and rendering in these pieces are only slightly behind what I do now. My skills didn't really improve much until about 8-9 months ago when I decided to take art more seriously. Lot's of catching up to do!

The first one is a concept I had of the guy you play as protoss. You never really see yourself in the game, so I was dreaming up an avatar like picture that could possibly be displayed for the player.

The second one is a concept I had of an infested templar. It's funny. I was sooooo proud of this piece back then. But now looking at it all I can see are mistakes. The lines are ok, and the design isn't all that bad, but the shading is all over the place. There must be fifty different lightsources!

This one is a design I was trying way back when guild wars was all the rage. Probably somewhere between 4-5 years ago. I think it was the third expansion that inspired me to do this one. I wanted to try doing a Native American inspired character. It's not too bad. His left bicep isn't right. Way too big and without proper form. Lighting isn't as horrible as some of my older pieces though.
