I usually recommend Ellenberger's atlas and Sheppard's "Drawing the Living Figure".

I've personally found that anatomy books are better reference manuals.

My better understanding of anatomy arose with actually taking classes with a full model to draw from life, alongside tutelage of the different muscles and bone structures. THEN i looked into anatomy books for useful reference material.

It was more effective to have an actual understanding of the human body before i tinkered with applying specific anatomy to them by referencing from specifics in books.

alas i am away from my bookshelf right now to list my choices

My favorite is Schider's Atlas of Anatomy for Artists. Dozens of different artists including masters drawings, so you get to see the same stuff approached in different ways.

Sadly, it looks like the hardcover is out of print.
I was once on the receiving end of a critique so savagely nasty, I marched straight out of class to the office and changed my major (sketchbook).

Should you want to learn about animal anatomy, too, The Art of Animal Drawing by Ken Hultgren is great

You can find a lot of things for free on the web. But Loomis books
are now being reprinted. Be sure to buy them and lend your
    support.

Michael Hampton's Figure Drawing: Design and Invention is also worth mentioning. Superb stuff. It includes everything you need to know before starting a life drawing class.
