    Character concept -technique critique

    Hi Guys,

Not been digitally painting long. Many working on techniques at the moment. Wonder if you could give me any pointers. I start a game art course in September so trying to get my skill level up. It's still a work in progress.

Tip: Don't go pitch black in a detail detail render because you can't read details in black.

Thanks that's useful info. I always try to show a full range of values from 0 to 255 to give some depth, went a little over the top.

The texture overlays are a bit too intense. Try lowering the opacity of the texture layer, blending or painting them in a bit more. Obvious texture overlays can look kinda dodgy if you don't incorporate them correctly.

Yea Hitsu is right. Pure black is super rare in nature, so to get your full value range only put spots of your lightest lights and darkest darks where the focal point is. I agree with claton too. In addition to working back into the textures try to edit/transform them before painting them so they wrap around the forms. This will help you with perspective of the textures. If characters are your passion, do an absurd amount of figure drawing from life. Study anatomy, do a few thousand gesture drawings.

I like the style, and in some medieval dark alley this guy would fit right in. The steel and leather look great.
