Museum drawings and my friend's dog. Tried to spend more time on sketches, but there's still a lot of work to be done.

Dumped the last values and started again, trying to think about the light source and shape of the forms. Still not sure if it's alright, but it seems to be better than last time where I was just copying my reference.

Some practice drawing from the shoulder today. Every section is one page. I find it really hard to do cubes using my shoulder without turning the page around.
I'm having a really hard time drawing from my reference photos lately and it's really getting on my nerves. It must be partially due to the week or so I spent doing absolutely nothing.

Drew an apple at work today. I think I need to get harder drawing pencils. All I have are 3b, 5b, and 8b, which make light shading pretty hard. But then again, you know what they say about a carpenter and his tools.

Pretty great start! You're improving since the begining of your sketchbook. Keep going!![]()
Thanks!
An update on the sketch. Started working on the hair, but I think it's too dark right now so I'll probably have to dial it back a bit.

Keep forgetting to update. Haven't really been drawing lately.
Here's the finished version of the girl I was posting previously:
And something I started today. I found a few flowers in a ginger ale can beside the garbage in my residence hall, so I took them for myself. Did as much as I could before the light from my window faded too much.
Edit: This entire time I assumed it was five or six because the light was fading. Just looked at the clock. Two in the afternoon! Wtf.

Some personal stuff:( Click to show/hide )
Drawing is kind of on the back burner right now. I'm going to try and draw a little bit every day, but I'm not going to be pushing myself for a while. Here's another shot at a self-portrait. I also did some gesture drawings yesterday.

Some life drawing. I felt so rusty! It was awful.

Love your sketches - your application with shapes and perspective is really good![]()
I hope you finished the flowers; I'd love to see them.
I didn't, unfortunately.
My final project for this year was a short stop motion animation. The full animation is here. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of it. Here are some individual frames that I like though (apologies for the crap quality):
Prior to the project, I hadn't drawn at all for about three weeks. Suddenly demanding myself to draw a bunch of faces and hands with some consistency was a real challenge, and to be honest I didn't do as well as I would have liked.
Drew the foundation of a self-portrait last night to try and maintain my momentum. Can't explain why I draw myself so often - guess I'm just a narcissist!
And sketched en plein air today. The weather was still a bit too cold for it, but it was nice to get outside for once.
Still can't quite figure out that ink pen. The tip is shaped so it can be used both as a regular thin pen and a wider brush-like pen, but I can't seem to get the knack of holding it in the right position for the thin lines. The wide brushy look was nice for the evergreens, though.

Oh, this is what happened with the last self-portrait I made. I decided to start the new one because I thought it doesn't look very much like me and it'd be easier to start fresh. Although, now that I'm comparing the two, I think the new one I drew doesn't have a long enough head. Aaargh.

Decided to try and go at my self-portrait with pencils for once. I feel like working one area at a time isn't the "right" way going about it, but oh well. Just realized I'm not really following the contours of the form either. I really think I need to get some harder pencils than HB because those lighter areas are really tough to do with what I have right now (HB + 3/5/8B).

Some life drawing from today while I slowly get back into the groove of things. I bought a 2H pencil as well as a smaller ink pen. They're both lovely to work with.

Did some drawing down by the river bank. It turned out to be a bit of an impressionist mess. Should have gone at it in pencils first before jumping to ink.

Some more work on the self-portrait. Made a pretty bad mistake in 8B with one of the eyes. I might be stuck with it now.
I think my ability to see properly still hasn't developed much. I can never seem to get the values right with these kind of things. The transitions always seem too harsh, even for hard edges, but if I smooth them out it all turns into a midtone mush. It's so frustrating. Might have to do some value exercises from movies.

Getting a little bit discouraged with this. It just doesn't seem to look right and I can't place my finger on why.

Worked on this so long that I can't tell if it looks like me anymore. Also forgot to draw in my other eyebrow before calling it quits for tonight, whoops!

Great work Keeptime, I love the diversity from your sketchbook! Your last post shows alot of charisma. Nice work and keep posting!
Looking good! I love the pencil work. Your last post show significant progress. Just keep the studies up and keep posting!
Your sketchbook has actually inspired me to consider posting a sketchbook regularly. Like you, seeing everyone's work scared me off and I left it for a while. However, I like the idea of motivating myself to draw everyday, even if no one will look at it, I guess it's an incentive. I can definitely see you've made improvements since you started.
Thanks everyone! Giving me the warm fuzzies.
Finally finished, I think. Definitely hit a sense of disassociation, but it was a good challenge. I think I'll let it sit one more day to give my eyes a rest and fix any last small mistakes before officially calling it done.

Hello keeptake,
The reason your self-portrait seems a bit off is that you didn't put some features in perspective. The head is facing away from us but the eyes and mouth look like they are facing us. The left eye should be higher and smaller.
I can't help you more because I'm a beginner too but I think you did a good work at shading and made progress since the beginning of the thread. Good luck !
