Today's life drawings. For some reason we had a new model who wore clothes that exposed her legs and arms. So yeah I was a bit stunned that I wasn't getting my weekly dose of live nudity. I mainly focused on her exposed parts and didn't pay attention to her clothes because I didn't come there to draw tanktops and jeans.

I realized a couple of days ago that I have a problem with drawing people just standing so I practiced. Trying to figure out things here so it's not pretty to look at but hey that wasn't the point.

kevin_ You're so right. I've noticed this too and I'm glad to say this update has one finished piece.

I've been dealing with a lot of shit in my personal life lately so that's why updates have been a bit scarce.

Here's a finished piece called Aqua that I started a week ago. Oh man the things I learned. I learned to appreciate soft round brushes more. I just kinda discarded them before but from now on I'm gonna use them a lot more. I just fell in love with the process. The thing looked hideous in the beginning stages but I didn't give up. I just knew I had to make it work. (Tim Gunn reference anyone ?) Once I got the major sections laid down the piece kinda finished itself. I tried creating a some sort of lightning which I haven't done ever. I don't know how I did but there's a first time for everyone. I don't think there's nothing more to say. Basically I just watched tons of funny Japanese videos on Youtube while painting for hours.

Today's life drawings. We had the same model again and this time she was naked. Why she had clothes on last week remains a mystery.

Really spot on likeness on the Demi Lovato pic. I instantly recognized her. Unless that isn't her... that would be really awkward... but I'm 99% positive it is her.
Your anatomy is coming along nicely too.
    Keep it up, man.

And the quote in your signature is awesome/so true.

Dude, bizarre amount of studies on here! What strikes me the most is your unmistakable tendency to stylize. It's like you're exaggerating form to kind of zoom in and understand what's going on, wich is a good thing, but not always. I think it's key to work on your proportions, the anatomy is coming along good though! Keep it up

XpRnz Thanks man for the critique. Yeah my latest studies have been highly stylized because I've been getting into using the basic hard and soft brushes. They force you to concentrate on major tones. Won't be a permanent thing, though

Lately I've been... you know... drawing. No digi paintings this time.

Moleskine sketch with heads and a couple of eyes. Looking at those heads I see so many mistakes. My understanding of the brow area is still a bit fuzzy and the placement of noses is off. So...

I really like both your line and tone quality - you've got a look that's both very structured and very organic, which is really hard to capture. You've really stepped it up a notch, even just over the past month or so. =) Keep at it!

I admit it: last month was pretty quiet. But fear not, everything is about to change because from now on I'm going to update this sketchbook DAILY all through December. I've set myself a goal to do at least a SP per day. Plus I'm gonna do a ton of digi studies whenever I have free time. Hopefully I'm going to able to pull this off.

The first SP. Blah. This is why I have to get better.

Man your putting out great work! I think your form and structure is really good along with the organic look of what. What I can suggest though, judging by your observational drawing, is to practice contour style drawings. I say this because your doing well capturing the structure along with volume but I feel that at times your proportions are off so I suggest you try out some blind contours as well as reading up on the fundamentals of using negative space to draw. You can then go back to practicing using the constructive method but studying the contour method will really help you zone into your problem areas and fix em up.

jus wow, not bad at all! your aqua piece rocks but the soft edged brush made it all blurry (unless it was intentional). you're doing great, i especially enjoy looking at the screencaps.

kamikazel33t Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm definitely gonna try out some contour drawing during this month's SP marathon.

jamsession Thanks man. You made my day. The reason why the Aqua piece came out so blurry was because I had trouble saving a JPG for teh intarwebs. Any help would be appreciated wink wink.

kevin_ I've put all that shit behind me. It's all a thing of the past now. Looking back, all I can do is laugh. Nevertheless, I appreciate your concern and the kind words. At the moment I have tons of time for practice which kicks ass.

4th of 31. The grind continues. I bet someone has experienced the following: Your back hurts like hell but you just keep on drawing. Eventually you can't take the pain anymore and you just quit. I hate it when this happens.

Today's SP session was a total fiasco. At first I didn't take all the fuzz about proportions seriously but I totally get all of it now. Apparently I also have problems with drawing with a tablet. These issues are now my top two priorities on my SP rampage. Values can come later.

Elias Leonard Thanks man. To be honest the piece is IMHO hideous but I posted it anyway. No holds barred, man.

7th of 31. Nothing fancy here, just trying to focus on proportions.

hey man just a suggestion, try and bear always how much Time it takes you to draw each sp, i know efficench its not your focus right now nor its line economy but its still good for you to know how much time does it take to attain certain quality, and try a mix of quick and long portraits that is gonna help you tons in this grinding month keep going!!!! im starting fires with my lines too this month! lets both work hard!

Cool! I see you are working on your proportions! I also noticed on lionheart's sb that you were looking into improving expressions as well as figures. I think you would learn a lot from studying methods used by animators in cartoons like stretch and squash as well as using asymmetrical shapes to really bring life to your drawings. There are some good books I can suggest like Michael Mattesi - Force: Life Drawing For Animators and The Vilppu drawing manual both are very focused on trying to achieve a lot of dynamics in their figures each in their own way.
