    ROUND #, 264

    topic:

ROUND#, The Many Mouthed Monster of Minnesota

this week we'll be looking at a terrible creature that has a whole lotta mouths. 3 to be exact.

the mouths are all required to serve a different function. one for eating, one for communicating (in this case screeching), and one that's used solely as a weapon.

as the title says this freaky beast lives in Minnesota. so make sure he's nice and furry so he can survive in cold climates.

    requirements this week...

    - the creature must show that it has 3 mouths. (1 for eating, 1 for communicating, and 1 as a weapon.

    - the creature must have fur on the majority of its body.

    - the creature should appear terrifying. (its a monster after all)

    Deadline:

    June 27th 7:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

Thinking grizzly-sized with thick matted fur like a bison. It shambles through the forest chirping like a songbird through the beak on it's snout. The creature uses sonar to navigate. It screeches loudly when confronted, the piercing echo providing several seconds of vision. The oversized teeth in the large center mouth are as much for intimidation as combat. The lower mouth opens into the throat, and is within easy reach of the arms.

    Very early sketch\ silhouette.

Screeching mouth is on the top- attacking under (most readable one), and eating one on the belly.

Is there everything OK with Concept Art website? My Avast antivirus is alarming me every time i'm opening links here. Anyone got same problem?

Some interesting designs here. I like Draconius's entry best so far.

I did a couple initial sketches last night. I still need to figure out what I'm doing for the actual body structure and fur:

Thanks for the encouragement guys I feel kinda bad though, I'm really struggling to get this piece done, I've tried a few techniques and nothing seems to get the image across how I want it.

I've got a general idea for the coat now but I really have no clue where to go from here and I'm not sure if I'll get it finished on time.

@Tchuk: Hm. Well looks to me like you have a solid start. With the linework and base colors down it's time to start doing some more detailed rendering. So where to start?

It looks like you mainly have a mix of long fur and some fleshy bits, so you could probably look at some pictures of long haired dogs to get a better idea of how the fur groups and how it responds to light. I'd also probably take a look at the way the Predator aliens look with their masks off, since they have a similar mouth. If you know what style you're going for, you could also take a look at an another artist with a similar style to see how he handled the problems you're having trouble with.

When doing this kind of workflow I tend to find the line-work starts getting in the way of painting so I'll stick a shrunken version off to the side as reference and finish rendering without it.
