so this is an oil painting i'm fiddling with...my next step is to put in some black
It's looking a bit flat right now...and I assume the black is going in the eye sockets to cover the background leaves?
Are you using a reference skull? If it were me I'd get a skull model and set it up in a bunch of silk flowers and leaves to get this right.
Have you seen the work of Stanley Mouse?
What would Caravaggio do?

well...that was kind of the idea except i was going to leave some of the green/blues in the bottom end of the eyes and coming up a bit from the inside of the bottom of the mouth cavity....and also...and maybe this is a no-no...but i was going to shade with the black as well to give things some form and volume....and then outline some stuff....maybe....
but i'm open man......i just feel as though i need to get more dynamic....create a better sense of impact...ya know....really grab ya at first sight....
Sure - depends on which way you want to go...realistic and impact or stylized and graphic with impact - Mouse is definitely very graphic and stylized...but things still read correctly...as in not distorted. Distortion is of course another way to go for impact. The place you don't want to be is somewhere between all that...people can inherently tell, so try to push it toward realism, graphic stylization or surrealism/distortion.
What would Caravaggio do?
