Thanks Mistah Black, the advice is really up in the air, could be total BS, but I believe its absolutely true from my experience of doing so many paintings and music as well.

render render render, gonna render more tomorrow, I think I'm getting faster at the rendering process... don't know for sure it's hard to tell, my colors are getting more accurate to the reference, I know that for sure. I really want to start applying some of what I hope I'm learning from doing these studies into something more interesting. Honestly I'm fighting my instincts in posting this right now because I try really hard these days to keep what I post at a certain bar of quality, but forcing myself to post every day makes it somewhat more humbling, also forces me to work a little harder.

I had a long period of time where I only really did studies of nude figures. As a result a lot of my personal paintings ended up pretty damn abstract as a result of not knowing how to make something feel as though it's from reality, while I really enjoyed the paintings there was always that kind of depressing feeling of wanting more out of myself. I feel the work I produced really captured my states of mind at the time and I'm really glad I did them but I need to evolve out of that stage to something new. I had my experience with some odd illustration experiments where I forced myself to be more creative because I lacked the ability to do anything but figures, but now I'm hoping the understandings I developed about creativity and design will be enhanced once I start understanding how to take imaginative work to a new level of realism, and that is the main drive for doing all these paintings from photos.

As dull as they may be, I am learning a lot from even the few that I've done so far.

Astounding, and intimidating. Your fantasy pics are brilliant, studies incredibly realistic. This is certainly beyond my ability to criticise, so I'm just going to sit here and boggle if that's OK with you.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments especially because I feel like posting these studies is generally a boring thing to look at, I'll try to get some illustrations packed in there as well to mix up the variety.

I missed the past few days, spent some time hanging out with friends I haven't seen in a long time, and learned from my mistakes that I need to do my studies EARLY in the day instead of at midnight so that I don't end up going out without having gotten my daily tasks done. Also been spending a good amount of hours every day on this illustration I probably won't get a chance to post too soon .

wow you've got insane rendering skills! the self portrait and that alien thing look amazing,
I especially adore the colors in the alien, sublime

I would just pick on the cloaked figure in the icy setting, I feel like there's too much of the same shade of blue so it looks a tad washed out and bringing in some more colors would help greatly

    anyways keep it up!

danke dupl, as for the icy thing, it's just a personal preference of mine to keep cold environments within the cool color range, I like blue a lot.

well there's this thing with less blue if that works, first thing I've posted beyond the first post that isn't a study, just wanted to make something that's easy on the eyes

another quick one tonight, trying to learn how to get a more finished look faster

I've been spending a bunch of hours in this illustration in a swamp and the foliage can take forever to render, so I'm trying to understand the basic idea of what makes it look right without having to slave over details

added another one onto this post because the first one felt pretty uninspired, this ones hopefully a little better

edit again, I wanted to stick it out for a little more time before going to bed, got a misty swampy study in there too

Lol, thanks Dile, though I gotta say, it doesn't feel like it, but if it looks like it from other people thats gotta be a good thing

Here was an experiment for today instead of a study, trying to apply what I hopefully absorbed from doing the studies last night. I spent a lot of time today just messing around to loosen up, it's surprising how hard it can be to get back in the flow of designing a picture when you've been doing so many studies in a row. The bottom image was when I started this picture, I was pretty frustrated trying to spark ideas, after taking a 5 minute break from it I realized I'd been way too tense the entire time and it shows.

The top image is after I realized and I just kind of destroyed all the tiny marks I had made earlier and let myself be looser with the painting, much better result, less time, less stress. Maybe the early frustration was a necessary part of the process, who knows.

I like your post yesterday where u applied what you learned from studying a topic, I would say though to try to push it further, I mean to take the pic to a more finalized stage, then you will see how much left you need to learn about the topic and if (and to what) you need to go back and study more.

    Great perserverence so far!
    All of luck!

hey kvick, really like the look of realism in your works, really pops up your artwork, is it alright to ask how you get that effect

Thanks guys, I'll get a more finished study up later in the week.

Razen, realism is a difficult term to really pin down, impressionistic paintings can look realistic but so can super rendered pieces. It's a combination of all the fundamentals to painting that I think gives a realistic feeling. Focusing on edge control, value, and color would probably be the 3 things I focus on the most when I'm painting. I've been doing a lot of paintings from photos in this book and that's not truly realistic because the values and colors are distorted by the camera in photos. Just yesterday I went out to a forest near my house and took some photos I'm going to be doing some paintings from. The colors in the actual forest completely dwarf the impact of the colors within the photos but I think we tend to forget what real things look like sometimes when we're presented with a photo that looks "pretty close" to the real thing. If you want a photo-real effect (not true realism) then generally adding a shit ton of detail will get the job done, and removing more and more details when you paint in the shadows.

I've been focusing a lot on game design, music, and reading a lot lately, so that's my excuse for the shorter studies, and getting them done at 3am lol. It's hard to find time for everything I wanna get done in my life, I think I'll find out the way to do it though.

Simplified study for tonight, focusing on brevity of brush strokes
