    ROUND #262 - Draconic Sap-Sucker

    topic:

    ROUND#262: Draconic Sap-Sucker

This week we’re heading back to my bank of adjectives and potential creature types and we’re mashing them together. This week the topic that bank helped me decide on is the Draconic Sap-Sucker. Dragons are typically depicted as being carnivorous or at the very least omnivorous, so what I’d like to explore with this one is the idea that a dragon-like creature, or a creature with dragon-like qualities would be heavily reliant on nectar and sap for it’s food source in the same way that many birds are. Your creature need not be a dragon per se and I encourage you to deviate as far from traditional dragons as you like as long as it maintains some “draconic” elements.

    Requirements this week:
    - The creature’s food source should be heavily reliant on sap and nectar. It should not have any carnivorous tendencies.

    - The creature should have features that make it visually reminiscent of dragons if not having it be a dragon itself.

    Deadline:

    June 13th, 7:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

    Finals go here: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=242087

Could use some feedback before I jump back into it

The Lesser Honeybacks collect nectar all day long, just by eating plants and flowers.
The nectar is stored in a sack on it's back a slowly turns into an organic honeyhive.
It is said that the males who have the sweetest odor and attract the most colorful insects,
are the first ones to be chosen as partners.

Nice start Oskar! One thing I would say is be careful of that front limb; the upper portion is looking a little humanoid at the moment and it's not really in keeping with the rest of the creature. Looking forward to seeing where you take it next!

Not sure if I'll enter this one, might not have enough time. I've done these anyway, mostly based off Pterodactyls and Tricerotops

    Cool entries..
Tchuk .. yours is such a sweet guy.

And I thought: give it a try Love the idea of a nectar sucking dragon and I had to figure out, which method I like..
Like an insect, like a bat or like a colobri...

I think, I'll take the variant of a colobri like dragon-creature, small with little but fast wings.

There is my fast sketch at midnight.. I hope, I have a lot more time after sleeping

Ethion - Try to incorporate those wings better into the body Right now they feel tacked on because they don't share characteristings with the rest of the design. It's not the membrane so much as the limb itself, which needs either incorporation into the blue plumage or elements of the yellow scales. The head needs some more contrast to define forms, since it's quite flat at the moment. There's a moment of tension at the base of its crest and the edge of the wing that's causing an ambiguity as to the position of the head (in front or behind the wing) that's interrupting the overall read of the creature.
scorge - Man, Dave, never stop being addicted to COW. I only wish that more people were. Great colours, and I love the marbley skin textures going on. As crits go, maybe get an area of light on the snout/appendage entering/exiting the tree, as I feel like it's getting a little bit lost in the primary read. I love the tendril coming back out again, but the sap attached to it looks a bit too solid. maybe give it a bit more weight, while still thinning the strand overall (thin it out towards the extremes and have it hang heavier in the middle, perhaps even coming down in front of the tendril). Other than thank: keep putting the prettiness in my eyes!

Ok, worked a lot more on Contrast, wings and so on.. better?
Ah yeah and this picture reminds me, that I have to adjust my Laptopscreen >.< Or the screen at work... The colors on the laptop are ok, at work a lot too high saturated >.<

Love to see more critique (And I hope, I understood all your hints, Si_Swe )

Awesome, I own that book. Great book. Even though this topic was generated by a semi-random mashing of adjectives and potential creature-types, that was the image that almost immediately came to mind, for me as well.

Scorge, everytime I see yours it looks better and better! So much detail and love the colour choices!

Tchuck, I hope you get a chance to continue yours as it's a really intriguing start; would love to see more.

I've just blocked in some colours so I can start to lose the line drawing soon.

some nice work in here guys!
a few quick notes, apologies for those I didn't comment, keeping this quick, and also apologies if these comments are a little late, but yeah....

scorge: looking good as usual! One thing I notice, which is more of a nitpick, is that it wouldn't really be possible for the critter to be sitting on the tree given it's current anatomy. Facing downwards with no opposable talons on it's feet would likely have it falling headlong to the ground. Look at the feet of this nuthatch for example, since they are pretty famous for moving whatever which way they feel like on a tree...
    Name: White-Breasted-Nuthatch.jpg
Views: 317
Size: 29.2 KB
...woodpeckers and parrots also have similar feet which allows them to do the same, even though they don't really do it as well as the nuthatch.

Quint_: it's a bit bright to me as well, just try to lower the brightness of the background as well, should be enough to fix it and make it pop a little more.

GEB: Looks awesome dude! can't wait to see the final result!!!! meaning, you better be finishing it!!!...i'm watching you...O.o

Oskar!: Looks promising, the arm is looking quite stiff may look better if it was in midstride, also would put the creature in motion and give a better understanding of how it would move.
