Couldn't back down on this topic. Will probably not finish in time though.
Anyway, here's my progress so far. Still very sketchy. The plan is to integrate a lot of symbolism on all the little elements.

I didn't notice the theme this week until now. A little late, dunno if I'll finish it, but we'll see.
Here's a real loose sketch.

I remember seeing your stuff way back in the day Scorge I am gonna anticipate great things

Hehe, should I take that as a compliment?
To be honest I'm not so sure what to make of it anymore either.
The idea was to make a twisted version of this guy, Shiva. in his aspect as "the lord of dancers" and "associated with the destruction of the world." according to wikipedia.
I also wanted to use symbols for evil that are not as overt as horns and tails, like nudity (obscenity), the evil grin, and the oversized crown to show that he is king. And of course i added fire, evil spirits and stuff to show that it's in hell.
But yeah, too far out of the box I guess. Can't picture this guy playing the devil in any entertainment product I know of. I'm fairly happy with the rendering at least
@scorge He looks seriously badass man, but I have to ask: Is that his tail he's holding in his hand? Because when it's coming out that way it might be interpreted as something else...
@MasterTroglodyte I agree with you, but subtlety is hard for this kind of challenge, where we're all competing to make striking images. Subtlety needs time and context in my experince. So you can do that with a series of images or a complete story. As for instance: I really liked Viggo Mortensens very downplayed devil in the Prophecy, I think it's one of the better movie devils.
@AimBiZ Sweet. You have a better framing than mine but I'm spotting some of the same concepts. Can't wait to see where you take it!
@DePietro Interesting direction. Like a philospher version of Sauron. The pose is great, but does he seem a bit too relaxed? Reminds me of the very laid back rulers of Skyrim (if you've played that game).
Some really great images taking shape all around!
Hey guys, your´e all doing great! I like the variety thats going on in this thread.
Well, turns out I wont be home for like 80% of my weekend so i'm trying to wrap this up

Haven't had much time as of late, but here's my interpretation so far.
I went for less "classic evil villain" and more "incomprehensible alien morality". Or maybe just "evil derp". The lower mouth will be filled with the anguished souls of the damned if I have enough time to keep up.
My Sketchbook - All are welcome
Adding colour and refining stuff
Trying to sketch out something interesting, haven't done many demons heh.

VegasMike very Wc3, nice quality.
I know I keep redoing, but I wasn't happy about the last one

So I rediscovered conceptart.org recently and finally decided to participate in 1 of the weekly competitions so I have done a few quick ideas and have taken the last one and restructured it to be more aggressive and asymmetrical so as to look "unperfect".
I didn't spend a lot of time today. ^^; And I just got a cleaning job, so I don't know if I will make the deadline. We shall see, and there's always next time, if this one doesn't work out! X3![]()

Albino-Z: Great piece, great atmosphereI'm not so sure about the Hell-part on this one though. It reads more like a Satyr or forest-king this way and I think you could push the design of the character (there's almost none now) a bit further instead of spending ages painting demons around him

GEB: I mostly like the webbed design of the skin and I can see why so many people like this design even though it's not very original. (no offense, but there's a definite Kekai vibe going in the plated armor and stuff) Also: There are some serious anatomy and proportion issues though. Arms are too long, legs too short and the fact that he's looking dead straight at us is weird since his body is on a slight angle.
Sorry about being a dick![]()

Ha ha ha!
To unlock the mistery of this strange abbility to move the head at opposing angles to the body, google neck...
I appreciate that the proportions are not wholey human... but he's not human. I think it's probably because I've posed him. You might try this with yours
And thanks for the Kekai compliment
I am equally sorry for being a dick![]()
Pixel: I would normally avoid "defending" a piece (as I find this role non-elegant) but I believe we share quite different views on design and that could be an interesting discussion in a thread like this one. Designing a character for me does not mean cluttering his form with loads of stuff so he does not feel empty. A normal human body can be a valid design choice, sitting (or being connected) to a live throne is design, having bloody feet is design and being indifferent when surrounded by all those creeps is contrast by design also. I find the disconnection of pose/surroundings and form a very simplistic way to view character design and I understand that this view can be highly personal and far from the industry demands, but for me artistically truer.
I love you both guys![]()
Geb: I actually meant that the head would be a tad more interesting if it's slightly off kilter instead of staring dead ahead at usAnd about the proportion thing, I guess he would be more imposing if he'd have more impressive longer legs to go with his longer arms. And touche about the posing, I'm just more concerned with design

Albino: We don't necessarily have different views and please defend yours because they are as valid as anyone'sYou choose to define your character by context (something I mentioned earlier in this thread in response to someone else) which is a perfectly good way of doing it and something which I advocate. I'm just saying that the context doesn't read as 'hell' to me at the moment even though I love your piece. I'm not saying that you should go all fire and brimstone, just more darkness or some implied things on the character.

Ok guys, I know im late...and the amount of awesome talent out there makes me almost not want to post this..but then that's not the point of this community..so here goes...
This is my version of the King of Hell..I know there isn't a lot going on..I want to add more dangerous and mean looking things to this relatively docile looking king of mine, but I can't decide what exactly, without it looking cliched...for now this is all my brain is coming up with right now... :|
