@PxelSlayer interesting armor design. Leather? I would loose or redo the shoulder pad, but other than that it looks like there's no way but up for him

@neutral The fourth one has some nice stuff going on with the helmet, and number one is good too, but doesn't look as dangerous.

This was not inspired by Halo, no not at all!!.......ok maybe a little....

Just building up the ideas from the silhos, I liked the human hunters the best out of the silhos so I made some roughs of these...the weapons really blow btw haha...I don't really paint or draw hard surfaces as much as I should...let alone sci-fi weapons and armour...

don't think I'll be able the find time to take these to finish though, but we'll see what happens...

Its just awesome to see everyone's ideas. Really inspiring. Did a bunch of thumbnails to get the juices flowing and picked out the ones I like the most.
I'm not totally sure which one's the best but I really like number 5 because he looks so greedy and untrustworthy, standing in a bar speaking some nasty sounding language. I'm hoping I'll have time to explore some of the other designs as well. Lets go!

Getting back into the grove of things. Gonna give it a try. Either I finish it, or I get some good practice and new assets.

Is it bad that I already have a gun in mind for something like this?

Well, if you get better at doing physics by doing physics problems, then you get better at art by doing art problems. Here's my start.

I started trying to do some sort of sci-fi PMC

    I end up with a Space!Roman.

I'm going to play around with this guy some more, but I may need to be babied along since this is my first go at CHoW.

@flashrabbit Cool spacedude, and is that a BFG?

Here is an update from me too. I messed up the perspective on the character, so might need to do some fixing. Especially the top part is just really wrong.

And I really should do something about that big empty wall on the left.

Like some sorta girl slinger? Or maybe Heavy gunner. Or some sorta high-tech whip wielding hunter.

    A rat man maybe?

(Just realize I made all these images way too big, well sorry about that. Next time I'll make them smaller. Gosh, pencil marks look hideous when they're magnefied.)

Parsakoira, I love that big tin head
Jon N, Super cool style there. Could be a Gorillaz character. I like the bird sidekick too.
Obstfelder, love the sketches. I actually like bottom right the best, but am a bit late to comment. Like where it's going though.
Pixeltuner, you rock. Looks like a krogan's distant cousin!
Cumquat, great thumbs, I like the bottom left.
Pixelslayer, nice. I like the red visor. And great simple metal rendering on the mouth piece. I think the abdomen piece needs to look more flexible.
neutral. The far right one is badass! And mid right for that matter.

tomercs: Well spotted, I certainly had Krogan in mind when I started this There's a nice Macross feel to yours. Curious to see If you'll keep him clean and hi-tech or go for a more gritty weathered look.

@Pixeltuner I like it. Sort of a mashup of Mass effect and Star Wars. Great details on the armor. The pose is a bit stiff maybe? He could look stronger and more menacing if the drawing had a little more movement to it.

@Tomercs Opinions are always welcome. I might be a little too far into this one to go back, but I'd be intrested to hear why you think it would be more interesting. I have a suggestion for you as well. I think your design is looking good. The helmet and torso are sleek and seem to be designed for speed, and the feet are large and flat and appear to be designed to carry a lot of weight. It seems contradictory, so I think you should either use it for storytelling (Like the armor is hoarded from several foes) or get rid of the contradiction.

@Tchuk you might be starting a bit heavy handed and saturated. I feel it often works better to start with desaturated colors and add saturation as you go along. Also: make a couple of color thumbnails of the image first so you can experiment faster.

If you haven't already I recommend looking at FZD school videos on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/FZDSCHOOL/videos. They show a lot of simple but effective tips for working with coloring of lineart, and using limited palettes for painting.

    You gotta start somewhere!

Now get some reference. However much you think you can fake things, you really can't. Get some photos, get a good solid pose down and go from there.

Tchuk...Hi, I think your colouring isn't bad! I also agree with Obstfelder checkout Feng's vids, they're awesome!
I also think, you could open your psd file(the one you're working on now, in colour), save it with a different name, then change the mode to gray/grey, and work on the values. Many awesome artists/illustrators say, the sketch stage is the most important,...laying down the foundations for a good piece, working out all the details first and then colouring.
If you do change the mode, don't forget to save it as a different file name!,...and all the best!
