Tonight's studies (yes, even the really ugly ones). From a few minutes to about an hour each.

Finished up the frog figurine more. Not sure if I'm done with it or not.

Studying planes of the head, by John Asaro. I'm starting to grow pretty worried that I'm focusing way too much on copying instead of actually understanding when painting (which is why you see a lot of referenced material here). Not sure how to get out of this silly habit.

Hey really nice job on those hand studies. IMHO your ability to see the right values/ colors and applying them on canvas is quite good. As for creating original drawings, I recommend joining weekly contests here on CA or any other concept art websites. There are character/creature designing contests as well as environment contests. This will force you to create your own stuff.

Whoa, your colors are gorgeous, and I'm digging the pokemon and skyrim art, haha. Just continue on with the environment studies and do more gestures, since your animals are very solid. Great sketchbook~ Can't wait to see more.

Good start. In terms of getting out of copying; working with different angles helps fight that habit. Or you can work with different tones/colors as well- shifting light source and whotnot. Or you can do a break-down of each area, and work on angles of that, until you nail that. For example- nose: still use the full ref, but only do the nose part, rotate, etc. Also, you could try line vs value studies of the same ref, and see what the difference is between shading/coloring, and NOT shading/coloring.

well, that's my advice. keep going!

    Thanks all, peeps!

poetry man: That's some great advice! I think it all boils down to my bad sense of perspective which impairs my 3D vision. But looking at a reference and trying to tilt it sounds like a good soft transition over to drawing from imagination. Thanks a lot!

Tonight's quick study. Was listening to Miriam Stockley's Perfect Day whilst drawing which led to the whole enchanted forest feeling.

Something that was supposed to be a quick analytical sketch of anatomy, but went way too far. Stoats are cute am I right. I'm a little extra proud of this one as I usually cheat a bit and colordrop from other pictures (I'm so glad you tell me my colors are amazing, guys ), but it's a nasty habit that I'm trying to get rid of so here I only worked from my own interpretation.

    Still in fairytale land~

i like your realistic lighting affects you put into pictures, nice gestures btw those will definately help you pose figures and lose the stiff look that i have problems with a lot. keep up the good work dude, you seem to be studying the right things just keep at it.

Trying to practice some original creature design (based on an older concept). Was pretty excited at first, but got sloppy towards the end, felt like I could've done a lot better.

Those studies look great! A good way to make sure you actually "study" the thing you paint and not just copy it, is to attempt painting the same thing all over again, but without the reference.

First sketch of concept art for a game project I'll be involved with for an exam work. Main inspiration is pterodactyls minus the wings. Their arms looks really awkward when walking around. Me likes.

Tonight's sketches/speedpaints. More relaxation (it's terribly relaxing to draw nature, I've come to realize) than study, but I've managed to completely get rid of the color drop habit with these, so I'm considering them important works nonetheless.

So since I can't draw realism portraits worth cheese I figured I'd give Dominic Monaghan a go! Cause you know, he's got that very unique look to him and his button nose and the shape of his face and the way his jaw always seems to be ever so slightly dislocated for some odd reason... Yeah, let's do that. Anyways, I recently rediscovered my favourite fantasy series again, Lord of the Rings, so I just felt like I had to do something with my favourite character, Merry (Pippin is also my favourite but you know, they're pretty much just one person anyway). Only the initial sketch so far, hopefully I'll post the finished version too at some point...catching somebody's likeness is incredibly difficult. :C Especially since this is pretty much my first time ever actually trying. If you're seeing this and have some pointers, feel very, very free to point them out to me!

Another WIP of the Merry portrait. He's kind of starting to look like the actor now! It's funny how such tiny differences makes a huge impact when it comes to one's particular face and features. Comparing this to the previous WIP I only slightly moved things around a bit and BAM. Completely different face.

The stoat is great ,really expressive and great quality of light. That one really stands out for me, i think some of your others have ended up too high contrast, expecially the woodland ones where the shadows look like night and the lit areas are practically glowing. But the stoat one tones it down just enough to come across more subtly.

And the Merry portrait is really coming along nicely. Absolutely no question of who it is.

Inkthyosaur: I do admit I'm guilty of overusing contrast sometimes, you should see my older works, they were really terrible. Thanks a lot for the insightful comment, I'll think extra hard of it in the future!

Amongst all the serious realism paintings... cartoons! Because slightly derpy Pokeymanz is the best.
Avatary thingys. Right one made for a good friend of mine to cheer him up a bit. :3
