    A Diablo Demon Hunter

Hey, as an old Diablo fan that is totally hyped right now, I recently drew one of the new classes, a female Demon Hunter. Even though I like the outcome, I am not totally content with it. So I came here looking for some overall feedback and advises to make it better (or more exciting). Thanks in advance!

I'm in a bit of a rush but something I noticed instantly; her shoulders are too far up and if it's because of the plates, then the arms are too short.

Uh now where you mentioned it... so obvious. This picture was an overpainting of an old one and thus I didn't see the anatomical mistakes, I think, I will never do such overpaintings again.

Is it better now? Before I go into detail again, I want to make sure, that it's at least half-decent correct.

Hey. It's great to see some Diablo fanart. I'm pretty hyped about the release too. As mentioned before your rendering is lovely, but you still have some anatomical errors in your drawing.

The hips and waist are definitely too small - if you want to give a line of movement/curve along her posture make sure you widen it to the right hand side. Remember the waist generallly shouldn't be smaller than the head unless you are going for an extremely stylised approach. I think her head may also be too big, but it's hard to see with the shoulderpads obstructing, which does throw everything else off balance. My recommendation would be to hide the shoulderpads for the moment and draw the shoulders (or at least sketch them out), adding the shoulderpads afterwards. This will make it easier for you to make sure everything is in proportion.

Here's some quick paintovers that may help you out. First, of the Blizzard art for Demon Hunter. Though there is foreshortening in play and it is stylised, you can see that the head is much smaller in width than the waist and that the curve on the waist and hips is wide and strong.

Second, a very quick paintover of your image. I apologise for the sketchiness but hopefully it will be of some help. The white lines are your own, the red lines and shapes are a slightly corrected version.

I hope this is of some use to you. If possible also grab a quick photoreference of yourself or a friend or family member, this'll really help you test out your pose. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out!

Now that I've looked at it again I'd note that the arm on the right is also way too short. The elbow reaches to the waist unless it is foreshortened back, in which case the forearm should also be in a different perspective.

You are very welcome. I just had an attempt at pulling your pose in a mirror, it was difficult but I ended up with this. Hopefully it'll be of some help.

Of course this is normal proportions rather than fantasy ones, but I am short (5ft 5) and my waist is 3 inches bigger than my head circumference.

Hope to see your progress later on today!

I moved the head a tad, looks much better imho, but I don't think that shrinking is necessary, then it will look too cartoon-like.

That's much better, I agree with dog-faced also, the move up to the right makes it much more realistic and puts the rest of the body into proportion. It also fixes the problem of her neck being lost among her shoulderpads.

The lefthand shoulderpad could do with shrinking/moving down slighty also I think and in dog-faced's paintover, the hips and chest widening just a tad. But it's looking much better already.

And you are of course welcome for the reference. Bear in mind though, that was the extent to which I could comfortably arch my back forwards, so don't overexaggerate the arc.

Here's my paintover with those fixes using my ref photo.

I added the red grid of thirds because the composition of your piece has been thrown off slightly with these fixes.

EDIT: I'd probably also move up her collar thing, at the moment it's sitting well below her collarbone.

I'm not so certain the face was ever too big. The big hood, big scarf, and big shoulder pads make the underlying proportions difficult to read.

you haver to assume her body fits comfortly inside that armour. with even maybe a gap where the sholder pad is extruded out to take the full force of the impact. in the preveous op painting you would have to dislocate her arms from her sholders and collar bone to squeze her in that armour. alnd maybe crack a few ribs.
