    Illustration or Drawing & Painting???

I attend the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. I'm currently a Drawing & Painting major but I'm wondering if Illustration would be a better fit for concept art. Thoughts?

Either way is fine, I've seen people from both sides do it. Your only advantage on illustration is printmaking and possibly digital illustration but I never did full on study of illustration but that is what most do anyways.

It doesn't matter what major you do, just build a solid drawing foundation and move on. Unless your really prone to want to do something.

Totally depends on the focus of the departments and instructors at that particular school.

While this is true, at most schools I think illustration is going to be the better bet. Drawing and Painting departments tend to be much more oriented towards the fine arts.

    Exactly, but there are exceptions.

It's do-able as a Drawing+Painting (read:Fine Arts major), but you're much better off being an Illustration major. Since it is far more focused on visual narrative/storytelling and communicating ideas (which is the basis of concept art). And most schools nowadays that have ILL as a major will have classes geared towards concepts, design, and digital media. /an Illustration major at a different school

Xensoldier-- Totally Agree, and this helped me on my thoughts to what the industry is based on
