Icon Soldiers, Monsters, Machines, and Concept work by Jared Blando

Hey all, I decided to start a concept stream of work in progress, as well as finished pieces and ideas. I want to make this a regular basis to keep my figurative work flowing, and fresh ideas open. I work in the cartographic industry so much, its get a bit dusty up there Enjoy!

    Thanks!

Oh my... good technique and great designs, but i must admit that your work seems very limited and not streamlined at all. It looks very cool though and this is important.

Give them some basic and flat colors to separate important details or equipment designs from soldiers and you'll see how cool it looks

(anyway i think you must calibrate your monitor, you're using some grey values as masks that are very hard to see and my 2 monitors are perfectly calibrated)

Hey, I hope you don't mind, I took 3 mins to do a basic value pass over your latest image:

    Name: vaktake.jpg
Views: 1939
Size: 99.5 KB

Just a couple of fast multiply layers and screen.

This process takes about 2-5 minutes and makes your drawing look 'more presentable', if not better. I'll be honest, I really do like traditional pencil drawings raw, but as a presentation people tend to like stuff with contrast, and it doesn't take that long to do. I hope this helps

Maybe, but i would have used line weight and a light pass instead of a shadow pass because his drawings are really busy and with a shadow pass you're aggravating this situation.

Meh, it's not so much about right or wrong, his drawings are perfectly fine. I'm just offering an alternative- Just food for thought really. If he takes this method to his drawings, i'm sure he'll do a more careful pass than mine

Here are some color concepts for Micropanzer's 15mm line of miniatures that i designed. Here sis a link to the site: http://micropanzer.com/

Also, i have some fantasy designs for a line of 6mm figures that will also me produced. Its more detailed than i really needed to include, but i took the ball and ran with it. Crits welcome of course.

You need crits for your drawings? Nah you don't need it

Just something maybe, are you taking references for poses? It's the only thing that sometimes is not up to your drawing skills. I think you should take photos of yourself in those poses maybe and use them to balance your stuff, or buy some mannequin that simulates human joints and take picture of it in the poses you want to use. I'm not saying that your poses are always bad, but sometimes it's the first thing that i notice because the rest of te design is full of details so the silhouette jumps on my eyes and i notice the pose first.

I'll be more useful for the coloring technique anyway because i did the same transition (from pencil drawing to digital) so i can tell you that the fist thing you need to get used to is to have a light source. Choose from where your light is coming into your subject (you can make a 3d arrow to help you remember it, it's useful!) and do highlights first. Maybe it'll be more clear if i show you, let me know

Hitsu San- Thanks for the helpful advice as usual! I do use reference sometimes, but often times i make up the pose. A little mannequin would be quite helpful. I do have a couple GI joes that i find quite useful, but more often than not i will look online for a reference photo. The light source is a great idea as well, i'll keep that in mind for the next designs i do. I actually hate drawing in the computer (i just dont get that satisfied feel) and keep my pencils strictly traditional, though of course all mt colorwork is in CS4. Thanks for the info buddy!

Joe777k7- Thanks for the advice as well, and your compliments, i'm always trying to learn

    Thanks guys!

    Hey Guys,

Another two concepts for the 6mm miniature game. Had alot of fun with these, especially he giant monster with the howda

I tried to work in more tonality into the beast, and i think i did a much better job than the previous concepts

You have a really cool line, I really like your futuristic art (bikes, soldiers etc...) which reminds of Warhammer 40K. Some of your fantasy works reminds me of the art of John Blanche too. Keep it up !

Love your line art, spectacular. I really like your fantasy stuff, it has a believability about it that really sells.

2: Courage is not the absence of fear, it is the presence of fear, yet the will to go on.

4: Yeah that's right, the other 3 were just recycled movie quotes, i know, but the darn too-tin i tell ya!

    Hello !!

I´m really jealous of your line control. For me is impossible at the moment to make something so accurate with it on my PC. I only want to say to your artwotk a WOW !!

Do you use any concept methodology before to make this great designs or you start drawing and make the decisions on the way?? I think you got a great sense of design, forms etc

    Greetings !!
