I thought I'd play around today, take it easy from studies. So here's something I've been farting around with in Photoshop. Nothing serious, but seeing if I can generate 100% original imagery still.

She's absolutely still a work in progress, but here's generic lady in a tanktop #2421.

Some progress of the girl painting!

And a quick little creation for a short film that I'm going to work on in idle time. It's a UFO Catcher (Japan's version of the crane machine.) I'm still setting it up and playing with the colors, but I plan to puppet it in After Effects.

Structural qualities. He's talking about the planes that make-up a form. If you thought more about what you are painting in terms of plane changes, you'd get a stronger 3d effect than what you've been painting currently. In 3D they call it wire-frames. (You're an animator right? I'm sure you are very familiar with wire-frames!)

A greater comprehension of "structural qualities" will lead to a stronger communication of what things are going back into space, and what things are coming forward.

From your more recent paintings, I can tell you know about making gradations to make forms read as if they're turning by making colors cooler and darker when they are in the shadows, and lighter when they're hitting light/bounce light. But I think you're simplifying the forms a bit to much. Try describing the forms better, and your paintings should have a better read to them.

Also, when working with color, remember that you should try to stay away from using pure whites and pure blacks, use yellows/oranges for lights, and cool purples/warm purples for your shadows instead. Of course, while keeping in mind out for how the lights and shadows effect the local color of the objects as well.

Keep it up though! Your most recent pencil work have a lot of charm to them. Can't wait to see more

That pose seems very unnatural, but the balance is good. I suggest looking up some references for different clothing materials, since at the moment your rendering of the top, the jeans, and the skin are all nearly identical.

Watch out also for the intersecting forms on the arms. Try taking that pose in front of a mirror and look where the shapes are overlapping. You'll notice the left forearm will cover more of the upper arm because it's turning towards the viewer. Conversely, the right upper arm will cover more of the forearm because it's extending away (the deep shadow also underlines that).

The short film sounds interesting! I'd love to see where you go with it

Look at that wall of critique. Uuuuuu.

Following the "structural qualities" critique, I did a few facial plane studies today. They were mostly pretty awful, but this is the one that worked the best so far. Will upload more upon them not sucking so bad.

    And various doodles.

Most of my time has been used up doing some storyboard stuff and applying for grants for a film that I wanna make. Still very much in pre-pro, but we're getting there.

Anyways, these are mostly just in my journal, so mixed quality. Fun nonetheless.

Love the energy in your sketches, especially that chick with the gun in your last post. For the planes discussion, it might be helpful for you to do some studies of a planar model to help you see the planar surface of the face: http://www.flickr.com/photos/garysev...7602588651653/ Also, Figure Drawing Design and Invention by Michael Hampton is all about breaking the figure down into simple 3-dimensional objects and planes, so that might be something you want to look into.

I also highly recommend painting from life with a focus on color and texture. And one last thing, your skintones feel very desaturated and grey - don't be afraid to add some warmth to the to brighten them up a bit.

    Keep up the good work!

@dierat: Thank you! Those planar photos look pretty helpful. I'll give 'em a go. I'll see if I can't find some scans of that book.

All in all, I'm glad to hear that contrast isn't an issue anymore! And my streaky brushstrokes have gone by the wayward.

I'll work on a piece where I really put some color into it, as opposed to the duller tones that I've been using. I usually have a habit of going a little haywire with color, but have toned it down lately. I dunno why? I find myself making a lot of obvious mistakes doing the digital painting that I catch a lot quicker when I use traditional media. Oh well! Train myself all over again, I guess.

Anyways, I started working on this piece today, started everything out in planes and have tried to make sure that 1) there's contrast 2) a clear division of planes and 3)blended shading. Gotta go go go.

Good effort! You're on the right path. I'm going to say that you are jumping the gun a bit though. Try to study planes with just pencil. Or at least outline every plane first.

You also need to break-down planes even more than you are now. You are simplifying very complex forms too much. The picture below shows how many planes it takes for the nose to take its form. Now try to apply that principle with everything else you see around you.

got that image from this book: http://philippefaraut.com/store/book...ting-book.html. if you were interested. Though, I can't remember if it was the first or second book.

I've done a lot of pencil work this week that I haven't scanned yet, but I thought I'd play around with painting today. Anyways, I've been checking out some information on the head planes and those sort of things, and I think it is solidified in my mind.

    So today!

First, I drew Boondocks fan art. Cause I can. The sword is all sorts of wrong, but it's not really an academic drawing SO WHO CARES.

Then I'm currently working on this piece for fun. Maybe just an excuse to look at attractive male torsos, maybe a plane study. Who knows.

I went on hiatus, dear friend. Took some time to explore things, decide for myself what I needed, and get some life in.

Anyways, I made some stuff on my own and here is some of it.

Haven't posted in a while for a couple reasons: I realized I had a while to go on polishing some painting skills before I felt like showing more work. Aaand because I wanted to work on some stuff on my own, get out a whole bunch of crappy art and move on.

So anyways, here's a hodge podge of random crap that I had been working on. Most are unfinished studies.

Tried to go 50/50 between Photoshop and Corel Painter in the paintings.

The McDonald's girl and escalator image are just composition ideas for an animation I'm working on.

rumpenstiltzkin: Thank you! I liked them a lot, too. Been studying some facial expressions from Boondocks and trying to loosen up my faces for animation.

So today! Some days I just don't plug in my tablet, and this was one of those days.

I'm trying to learn how to draw Japanese people in practice for the film I'm working on. So there will be a lot of Japanese/east Asian people in coming posts.

The horned mammal creatures were inspired by a photoset from tumblr of some costumes. Decided to play around with masked creature designs.

Thank you Black Spot! I'm glad you think so, certainly what I was going for.

Still working on those fluffies now, trying to come up with a few different styles. Will (hopefully!) paint them into an environment soon.

Also, painted atop the succubus drawing, not sure how I like it. It isn't finished either way, but I can't decide if I like it enough to finish it.

And did a little more painting on the Morrigan forest piece. My boyfriend noted that the highlight on the tree from the wand flattened out the background, so I'll fix that.

And as always, thanks for looking!
