BMC does her best but needs to be better~!

Hello and welcome to my sketchbook!

I'm approaching a year with my sketchbook, and it's been a huge year of personal growth with CA! Thank all of you so much!

I'm building a portfolio with hopes of working as a concept artist for an animation or game studio. I can use any and all pointers!

Pretty good start I reckon! Maybe try some value studies of compositions?

Sure, that sounds like a really good idea. That's definitely a weaker point for me.

Okay, I did some value studies of Caravaggio pieces! Cause he's the master at contrast. I real quickly threw some colors on them just for fun.

With Doubting Thomas, I only used 4 tones. Black and white first, then light and dark grey. I tried to keep the reference no larger than a couple inches on the screen so I wouldn't get caught up in detail.

Doubting Thomas was about two hours, John the Baptist about 1.

I'll try some more mid-value pieces next.

Hey there! Welcome to the light side of CA, free of the shadows and tunnels of the lurkers!

Really nice start here. Game of Thrones study looks cool. I also really enjoy your female characters from your first post. They feel pretty energetic and lively. Keep it up!

And thanks for stopping by my sketchbook as well.

You've got some interesting stuff going with your various digital painting styles - if you're new to it, it's good to explore different styles like you are, figure out what works for you.

I really like the face speed paints in the second post, I think they're some of the strongest work here. Nice colours, good separation of planes/light/dark - could probably stand to have more contrast, but they've got nice hues. When you start to use lower opacity brushes (like a lot of the ones in the next post, especially the girl leaning on her arms) you start to get streaky, and begin to lose the form, as well as gaining texture that you don't really want. You can really go two ways - fairly sharp separation of planes, or soft, smooth transitions (or combine both, depending on the type of shadows). Try blending a little - smoothing out those transitions.

So these are just about my first environments I've ever drawn--or at least damned close. Sooo it's a bit embarrassing.

Anyways, these are at 20 minutes each. They were also completed at 50% zoom. Trying to train my eye to only find the main parts of the image, not get caught up in detail. Also trying to work on the contrast.

It's been a pretty productive kind of day.

1 minute-ish gestures with some quick doodles.

The girls are some quick ideas for Nebraskon's mascot girl. Chance to win free badges. The only descriptions were, "She's American, 17, and likes boxing. She's happy and carefree."

Oh, and a stupid Dragon Age fan art, because I love Fenris.

New environmental study for today. Spent sometime around 45 minutes on this one.

Trying not to be afraid of dark darks and light lights. Prooobably could have gotten lighter, but hey. I used black! Probably should have used more, but yeeeaaaah...

It's quite easy to see that you know how to draw. I've got no doubt you will be amazing (or shall I say... more amazing!) when you get more used to the tablet.
I really like the speed sketches of the girls face earlier on in the thread, very nice.

    EDIT: HUUUGE

    So a random post.

Some prismacolor markers of my family's faces, trying to focus on contrast. The photo was taken with my iPhone (I lack a scanner atm.)

I redid a little bit of the environment with the hills/man.

A WIP of an environment/film study of Game of Thrones, again.

And a random FF fan art from March.

Nice! Those value studies look great! Try to introduce some of that extreme lighting and contrast in your own work and you're onto a winner!

Didn't feel like art today, but uploading something a day so.

Here's some studies via drawingscript of the athletic category. 60 seconds each. Mixed quality.

Never really did gestures via Photoshop before, so I had a little bit of an issue with that.

Nice stuff you got here. The portraits are great. You can push the values even more to make them more polished. The digital studies are coming out nice. While drawing gestures try to concentrate on the overall form rather than the individual parts. It is kind of stiff at the moment. And hoping to see more extensive anatomy studies!

Thank you! Indeed, I think it's in general agreement that my values need to be more extreme.

But I was wondering if you could be more specific about the gestural critique. Which gestures are stiff?

I ask, because my gut reaction is that I disagree. My gestures all start with a line of action, then a line for the spine. I'm not too sure how they seem like I'm focusing on individual parts, especially since they're already so messy/scribbly. Maybe I'll see it if you're more specific?

And thank you for helping me!

The post number 24, the first set of gestures have a lot of scribbly lines which looks a bit stiff and not dynamic.I guess that is because of shorter strokes rather than longer flowy strokes.Especially the top 3.
While the bottom 3 have loose lines which are defining the forms with few strokes. Especially the bottom right jogging girl one looks good. Sorry about the confusion XD

So work started up again, and I got busy planning lessons and trying to learn some new Japanese. Took over my life a little bit, but now I'm back into the swing of things.

Spent some time looking at art, reading about art, and thinkin' about it. Made a few thumbnails.

The last one needs some work for the lighting, but I need to upload something here instead of just fade away. So here we are.

Wanting to do a Dragon Age fan art and spend a little more than an hour or two on it. I have a composition idea in my head, but have yet to nail exactly what I'm looking to do. Trying to think about the composition in black and white, to work out the lighting.
