The nazi soldier looks very much like Mike Mignola's nazis.I can actually see some of his style in your sketches too and that's really cool.
-> Velocity Kendall, Vritra, bouroune: thanks a lot everyone!
-> henri: I'll try to post more, for some bizarre reason my *real* job is keeping me away from the drawing board... weird isn't it?
-> shockowaffel: yep, I'm not a fan of nazis either of course, but there was something about their uniform design that really stood up for the period. Not to mention all those rockets, giant cannons, prototype planes...
-> Kriss_Kringle: thanks, I'm not trying to go in the same direction of Mignola (not consciously at least!) but I really dig his stuff, so that's a pretty nice compliment.
great updates man! glad to see your rocking some stars now too! you certainly got my vote ha! anyways, just dropping by to share some love. keep posting man!!

Hey amigo! Thanks for getting back to me on your tools of choice. Color me impressed! Did you study from Guptills 'Rendering in Pen & Ink' book by chance ? Love how you build the form with your layered hatching on this last shot, and the little things like the runic symbols give it a nice fantasy touch.
Anyway, high-five on those five stars, that was fast! (and well deserved)Keep it up!
-edit- heres a link to the book on amazon, i would post again but i dont wanna fill your page with my ugly face more than i have to~ http://www.amazon.com/Rendering-Pen-...4452717&sr=8-1 It's a brilliant book written in 1930 with some of the most valuable, comprehensive information i've seen on the subject. I have a feeling you'd appreciate it~

-> NickyBeats, NakedZergling: thanks heaps!
-> AustenFM: thanks man. Sorry, I've never heard of 'Rendering in Pen & Ink', but I'm curious now. Next time I'll pass by a bookstore I'll give it a look.
Awesome work! I especially love the crosshatching technique you use on some of the portraits.

Well, this is a considerable jump back in time.
The other day I was browsing around my backups and stumbled upon a couple of scribbles I did AGES ago.
I'm not really sure about the year, this was when I was studying anatomy and trying to understand why the skin keeps wanting to hide such incredible things underneath itself.
Enough chatting, I formally declare open the
[time capsule]
item#1: some dumb anatomy study were I tried and directly compare human walk and quadrupedal one. Everyone always asked me instead why that guy is transforming into different animals, there I understood I failed.
This was made so that the basic layer was pencil on paper, then there was several added layers of transparent tissue-paper each with its own contribution (bones, muscles, fat layers...). This was the "bones" one.
(yeah I know... crappy scan)
Such a beautiful aesthetic you have in your sketches Maolu. Your forest sketch is really nice, I love what you are doing. I wish you the best!
Kindly,
Cedric
Thanks ceddo, much appreciated!
item#2: this is from when I was trying and grasp reality as it is... how naive! It's a portrait, oil on wooden table, of a good old friend of mine, more or less 10 years old (the portrait, not the friend!).
Even worst than crappy scan, if I recall correctly this was a bad film photo that then has been crappy-scanned©
super stylish work! love this last portrait, as well as the nazi on the first page
WOW! Great SB man! I love it. Keep up the awesome work!!

Thanks people, you're really kind.
I'm going on with the time capsule, these are some sketches from a couple of years later, not sure where I was heading with those ones, looking at them now I feel like meh...

You people are always hungry, don't you think about me?
Thank dog, I've got a good stash in this time capsule to buy me enough time to produce some new stuff.
item#4 is probably from the same years of the previous one, I think I remember doing this in one of the earlier photoshop versions, on a horrible CRT monitor.
I thought about giving it some more decent color correction before posting it here, but that wouldn't have been historically correct.
I found some more anatomy studies from the past, here is some hands:
