The Night-Ferveran is a very rare insectivorous species which can only be found on Kerb 4. Its white color and glowing in the night attracts many of its natural foes ...and tourists. Speed and its well-temperatured hindlegs are its own but powerfull weapons.
I got my inspiration for the final one by watching some running cheetahs on youtube and I think I should try to improve my skills doing landscapes for the next one...

Darting from shadow to shadow, this rare animal is nicknamed "the Banshee" because of the wailing sound emanating from the cooling wind tunnels developed in strategic areas of the creature while in swift motion.
Being albino from birth and with its extraordinarily thin skin for increased heat dissipation, it has a somewhat macabre appearance.

Concept: The rolling white monster


The rolling white monster is a beast that is able to roll in very high speed between the light areas were the killing sun is. The pair of extra legs enables the creature to have a greater starting speed when it jumps to curl itself to a wheel-like thing. The hind legs can be used to maintain the speed while in "wheel form". The rolling white monsters tail is partly flat witch helps is to have a flatter area where is touches the ground while in "wheel form", its back and neck are also a harder material to help it move faster while in "wheel form". The hair like thing coming out of its head is mysterious thing that enables the creature to register the area around itself while in "wheel form" because neither eye or ears will help it in that matter.

Dangerous when approached in the wild, the Albino Sand Taurus speeds across the giant desert of Harook in constant search of vegetation. The native desert dwellers often trap these majestic animals for food and for use in desert races.

Under such high heats in the desert, the Distribaldo needs to use speed as a way to keep itself cool and alive. It has slits in it's skin to help it take in oxygen and sharp teeth to quickly catch and digest food on the move. Also, almost everything in the desert wants to eat it, so speed is useful when being hunted.

Concept: Albino Sand Sprinter

Originaly living underground, thus evolved their albino skin. They eventually moved to the surface and using a quick burst of speed they are able to travel across vast plains to hide within shady areas, they usually don't move very far from the shade after sprinting, because they need a few hours to recover from the exposure from the hot sun on their vulnerable skin. To aid in their speed, their cranium has elongated much like that of an Olympic cycling helmet. They've evolved large nostril-like openings on the front of their head, and rather than exhaling through their nostrils they expel the air through tubes on the backend of their torso. This in turn reduces drag and provides a small amount of thrust when they are running. This also allows them to extract more oxygen from the air, giving these creatures more energy and more efficient sprinting for longer periods. They use fin-like flaps of skin on their ears and tail as air brakes when they need to stop or slow down. Due to their high speeds their vision becomes quite blurred making it more difficult to navigate, they use small infrared sensory organs just in front of their eyes to pin-point where cooler areas are while running, so they do not miss and get burned.

Native to the desert plains of inferterra, toblaps spend the vast majority of their existance seeking shleter from the sweltering light of the nearby sun 'buras'. Unfortunately the spiecies has been drawn to near extinction as the only shade found on inferterra is under the leaves of the very rare 'yukos trees'. Ironically enough the toblaps only diet is of the leaves of the yukos, having eaten away its natural habitat the toblap is highly suseptable to deadly sunburn due to their ablino pigment hide.

Not often has an albino creature been given a name of it's own, but this record-breakingly fast yet elegant being has earned itself the nickname "Shimmer". It is called so because most of the time it's seen, it's speed and color make it little more than a shimmering light in the distant heatwaves, like a star traveling across the land. Little is known about Shimmer or it's kin, as sightings are rare and they are easily lost in sandstorms, which local tribes believe are caused by the creatures themselves.

Due to his tremendous speed this little predator is known as the "White Wonder". His quickness does not only help him to run from shadow to shadow as fast as possible, it also helps him to hunt down its prey and to escape his natural enemies in case of emergency.

Due to the harsh environment of the desert, the Chitinous Chaser has developed a hard exoskeleton as self defence. The Chaser is both predator and prey; always on the hunt for other desert creatures to satiate it's never ending hunger, dodging from one shadowed outcrop to another. As a result, the Chaser is built for speed. It has a lithe figure, and large lungs allowing it to move at incredible speeds across the dry plains; pushing it's massive frame with all 6 legs. Due to it's bulk, the speed it runs at can often leave it exhausted and vulnerable, meaning it is always on the alert for larger beasts that might take it by surprise. The Chaser's life is a difficult one, for which it is uniquely adapted.

The Equinax is the fastest land animal we have discovered on our galactic expedition. It's additional legs help push this sharply hoofed mammal over 100MPH in full sprint. The species is naturally albino and prefers to inhabit cool, shaded areas. We discovered the indigenous tribes have a close relationship with these animals. They use them primarily for speedy transportation over long distances to trade and communicate with the other local tribes.

Concept: Flat Devil

Indigenous to salt flats, the flat devil is primarily nocturnal, only emerging to hunt through the evening and night. Its primary mode of capturing prey is to launch from ambush through a rapid acceleration to capture prey with either its long, toothy jaws or forelegs. Due to their nocturnal state, and the colors of the flats, natural selection has proven a tendency for a lack of color which eventually lead to a species-wide albinism. While bearing large eyes, the primary mode of finding prey is actually the heat pits located in the muzzle which lacks nasal passages or the ability to smell. Instead, air is taken in directly through nostrils on either side above the lungs, guarded by long, white hairs which are almost invisible against the hide.

Due to their clever nature and only being a little above knee high to a human, the planet's population has begun to breed them as pets and hunting animals for small prey. This has caused other hide variations only appearing in captive populations.

It's albino skin scorched from the desert sun, this mammal, about the size of a housecat, speedily makes its way across the desert landscape. Its six legs bound across the endless sand and rock terrain at speeds in excess of 100 mph. External air intakes allow for the taking in of more oxygen, fitlering out the arid air and replensihing the moisture in the Albalisk's body at a more molecular level, reducing the need for sweating and increasing the blood flow at 10 times the rate of a standard predators.

Concept: The snapper


Description: This creature uses its extra set of legs in the same way that we humans use our thumbs to build up momentum from our middlefinger when we snap our fingers, thus the nickname "The snapper".

The middle legs hold the hindlegs while the Snapper builds up torque and pressure in the rear-part, then the short stubby middle-legs release them and release a sudden QUICK jab with the hindlegs.
Thus making the creature move in SUDDEN bursts of speed.

Oops... forgot I could vote for multiple people on this one... oh well.

I put my vote in for akerman simply because the rendering was very well done and because he was one of the only people who really put serious thought into how their creature moved, the placement of the legs on the torso, the musculature, and really designed a creature that looked natural and aerodynamic. Well done!

My other two favorites were Mhugo and Lhune. They had the most original designs in my opinion and really tried to instill that sense of motion and swiftness which was paramount to this round. akerman just did that the best which is why he got my vote.

Scorge I felt was really strong in the sketch phase, but the creature really does not look or feel like a housecat-sized creature, or one which could move at 100 mph. I originally thought it was rhino or elephant-sized, and I would have liked some environmental cues to give more information about the size. Also, while the rendering is very nice (especially on the head), I think some anatomy studies for the legs would have helped since they don't look sinuous, muscly, or tendiny and look a bit clumsy for such a mobile creature. Just some thoughts. (props for the tiny lizard in the bottom right and his expression).

Edward B I liked where it was headed in the sketch phase, but hooves look way too awkward on this guy, and I can't imagine him moving quickly without better purchase for his strange limbs. Also, there is some visual confusion about where the legs are on the body. For instance, it kind of looks like some legs are overlapping strangely where they shouldn't. This problem probably just arose during rendering, so I think that's your biggest area for improvement. Nice work though!

Rob Powell This is solid! I particularly like the one sitting in the shade. I would have preferred, however, to see a better view of the running one since this week was all about motion and making the creature's six-legged gait seem natural. That was really my only issue. Nice work!

VegasMike As always a wonderful job! My issue with this one was that the limbs seemed a bit stiff to me, and more flexing in the joints might have helped this. That being said, I love your concept and the cavalry-type approach you took.

M!CK Lovely, lovely illustration. It's rare that this style is seen in concept art as it looks like something out of a children's storybook. It's delightful, but there is nothing that says "speedy" about this creature. It looks like a slow-moving herbivore which is why I couldn't consider it for a vote this round. Anyway, if nothing else, it was stylistically one of my favorites.

Abee That's a pretty awesome design; good job at capturing the motion and I like how it's eye is in an unexpected place . Could have done with slightly more convincing musculature I think, but that's probably just me.

scorge aburnier pretty much pointed out what I was going to say. I really love that head, but it just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the body very well (in terms of rendering mostly).

VegasMike Got one of my votes. I really love how you turned it into a mount, and despite the fact that it could have been a bit more dynamic, I think it looks rather convincing. Love the head, too!

Mhugo Really lovely and playful. I can't really see that thing run at 100 mph, but it does look like a very agile little creature, like a bushbaby or something . Nice work!

M!CK LOVE your style. Would have gotten my vote if the creature just seemed a little faster, but honestly I think this thing is pretty awesome on it's own, the sluggish look just suits it perfectly.

iamdio It's a neat concept as hares are pretty fast already, but I do think you could have deviated from a regular hare a bit further to make it more interesting.

Lidiev Got my vote for the simple uniqueness of the umbrella tail to slow it down, I thought that was an excellent design choice. I do think it could have been executed better but still, lovely!

Rob Powell Turned out looking pretty good . I still stand by what I said about the size of the running one which I think should be much smaller in this perspective. Otherwise though good job!

warburton Aw that poor thing haha! It could have had slightly more convincing anatomy and the neck isn't quite connecting at the center of the head, but otherwise neat idea. Like the gecko look it has!

sozo Yours reminds me of those old dinosaur paintings! It even looks like a prehistoric beast; very cool, love the texture of it's skin. It doesn't come off as a very fast creature to me though, and the white is probably a little bit too white (a mistake I also made at first). Still, neat job!

MightCrawler The concept is actually rather clever and interesting, but it does lack in execution a little bit. The creature is rather formless which is a shame. Be sure to look up skeletons and understand the proportions and structure of existing animals so you can apply it to your concept .

Pixeltuner Buff indeed . I really love that head design, only the rest of the piece doesn't seem up to par with the head in terms of quality/execution. You did improve the legs in my opinion though.

ToddBushman I like how you went for an insect-like critter! Would have been nice if it had a little more variety in the legs in terms of structure, and it's a shame you used black for the shading; it ended up looking a little muddy because of that. The concept itself is neat though, well done!

diheb1 Interesting concept, but could use a little more thinking through I think! The tail helping as a rudder is very cool, but I think you might want to look at animals that use their tails in that way for reference; birds, flying squirrels, certain reptiles. Overall you definitely need to work on the fundamentals (structure, form, light, color) but it's good to challenge yourself every now and then so props to you for that .

GregorKari There's something really appealing about the way you rendered this critter. I think it's front legs could have been a bit more outstretched, to make it look like he's actually reaching for the ground, but other than that I don't actually have much to say. Good job, keep working !

Great round guys. It's time for some crits, and brace yourselves folks, because nobodys getting left out.

GregorKari Cool concept, especially considering how quickly you finished it. I like the style you've got going on. Theres alot of bland browns and greys on the page which don't do your creature design much justice. Also the lava feet seem abit random and out of place, especially as no other aspect of the design has this.

DiHeB Interesting concept, i like his big feet to help him on with speed. First thing, in your description you mentioned this creature is found in the desert, but comes from the south pole. This would never happen. Consider, if it lives in cold climates and avoids heat, why it would go to the hottest environment on the planet. Also, how would it get there? Just some things to consider when you tackle your design. On the actually concept, the floor its on is abit unclear, its tough to tell whether its meant to be water or ice. Don't be scared to grab some ref and do some studies if your unclear about what your painting. The sun steals alot of focal attention too because of its colour. Watch out for this, because the sun is never this colour either, unless maybe on a sunset, but even then its prity rare.

akerman One of my fav entrys, you nailed it dude, well done. Great consideration into design, great anatomy and nice one for getting that feel of speed, something i tried failed i guess =S One thing i could crit is the albino aspect, which perhaps could have been pushed further. Great job regardless man, i hope one day to able to paint like this.

ToddBushman Cool take on the topic, yours is original which is great. The main thing which i can see thats wrong here is your values, and the fact theres no direct or clear light source. Try to push foreshortening elements too, because at the mo your creature is flat. Perhaps push that tail into the background, move some branch into the foreground too. This would help with creating depth to your image. I'm gonna have a guess here too and guess that you used the lasso alot on that creature. If i'm wrong i'm sorry. But i would avoid it, or at least use it only for areas that you want focals, because the whole creature looks too sharp and kinda looks like its been cut out and stuck on top of the image. Try to concern more about getting the form right, which light and darks first, then worry about getting edges crisp.

Lidiev Haha, thats awesome. Love the idea of a parachute tail to slow it when going super fast, nice one. My main concern here is the creature all looks very blurring and soft and its making the actually design of the creature tough to read. Theres alot of thick black lines too which seem out of place. The colours are abit plain too, try to inject more variety of hues when dealing with skin tones. That being said, the albino aspect is abit unclear. Try finding some creatures which are albinos, theres loads online, and doing studies of them to help with stuff your stuck on.

Pixeltuner hey man. Cool to see you doing creatures now as well as characters. The colours are really nice, you nailed the albino aspect of the design. I like how you rendered its head too. The main crit i can see here is the anatomy which feels abit off, especially around its legs which feel abit stiff and clumsy. Its something i still struggle with alot also. It looks static on the page too, i find it tough to believe this thing could move at 100mph, but i think thats mainly to do with the previous crit. Cool entry anyways dude, i hope these crits helped in some way.

MightCrawler Great idea for the topic and original too. The final stage of the action, where its in a ball, its unclear how all the legs fold up, it seems on leg from the side of its body has vanished. Try to focus more on the anatomy too because there isnt much at the mo. Some textures, or variety in values to see what the creature is actually made of too, its it furry, scaly, wrinkly etc? On a side note also, i know its alot of time but it would have been awesome to see this concept it an action shot, like in its environment, or hunting prey etc etc.

sozo Very beautifully painted and great concept. Love how much effort and detail you put into this design. Not much to crit here, i want to be able to paint this good ;p One main thing i can see which you could do to improve the image, is your shadows. Theres alot of black, which i think in a climate that bright and full of colour, would bounce off onto your creature. Like for instance, the shadow on the sand, would probably have hints of blues from the sky, and the under part of the creature would probably have yellow and red hues from the sand. Great entry regardless, nice one.

Rob Powell Hey dude, still killin the creatures i see. Nice comp and well done on tackling albino skin tones in light and shadow. The design of the creature is prity cool too, i can imagine this thing moving super fast. One main crit is your colours. As i said with sozo, check out how relected light affects shadows, there would probably be blue hues in the sand shadows. Same with the creatures, with the skin being so pale and almost transparent, there would be abot of variation of hues depending on the climate. Keep it up dude, your doing awesome as usual.

iamdio Nice concept, i like how the creature matches its climate for camoflage. The over all design isnt that adventurous though. It seems like its just a bunny with extra eyes and legs. Also, if this design of a creature already exists and works in nature, would a this version work? You could argue that the snow rabbit is already a perfect design, because it exists and works. The back half of the creature looks abit off too, its back legs look to high, and the white explosion underneath it looks like its just run over a bomb.
That being said i like how you tackled the fur texture on its body and the pale reds and purples. Hope these crits helped.

M!CK Cool style! Love the colours going on here. You nailed the albino aspect of the design. Those skin tones are really nice. The main thing i see which bugs me here is its feet, which seem abit out of place on the design. It looks like its wearing a load of shoes. Also, theres nothing here which suggests this thing can run at 100mph, it looks prity docile and slow if anything. Nice concept regardless, hope to see more of your stuff in the future.

Edward B Great to see more of your stuff dude, love your stuff and rendering. Completely honestly, if i ever saw this thing running at me i would shit myself big time. Liking the whole blues and oranges running through the concept too. The main crit i can give here is that i think it anatomy seems abit weird. The middle set of legs/arms seem unnecessary and out of place. I would imagine, the way this thing would run, and with its legs like that it would probably trip over itself. Great to see your designs again, looking forward to seeing more in the future.

Lhune Nice concept, i like how went with your creature being elegant instead of speedy frenzy like most (including me 0_o). Possible crits would be the design isnt that adventurous, apart from the head it kinda just reminds me of a horse with an extra pair of legs. Also, its face looks out of place compared to its body. It looks very chilled out and static, like its just woken up compared to it travelling at 100mph. Nice entry regardless, love your rendering style and your use of colour, nice one.

ENNEX Nice concept, the over all design is prity interesting. Would have been cool to push your light and darks and colouts in the background. The creature kinda looks light by moonlight, so it would be awesome to push that. It seem to be floating in space too, its feet dont look grounded on the environment. Finally, your creature doesnt seem to be speedy, theres little in the design which would suggest this creature could move at very high speeds. Also, if it lived in the mountains, would'nt it kinda be dangerous to travel at high speeds? Can you imagine driving a motor bike in the mountains at 100mph, would probably end badly.

Mhugo Cool entry man, love the atmosphere of the piece and the motion you captured. Something i tried and failed 0_0 Sorry dude, i'm having trouble finding crits here, if i were to crit anything i would just be picky stuff which is purely subjective anyways so it probably wouldnt matter, like pushing the foreground elements of this front foot, and abit more rim lighting to further describe the form and colours. Sorry i couldnt be of more help, great job on the concept.

Tchuk Nice design of the creature. Cool motion you captured too. For me it feels abit unfinished though. The lines and colours feel abit scappy in areas, and the black lines on the creature are distracting from the colours and values, which could probably be pushed further. Great potential though man, you should keep pushing it.

Vegasmike Great job on capturing the element of speed dude, and i like the little riders too. Gives a great depth to the story and feel of the piece. One thing which ive noticed is theres alot of black in your creature which looks abit odd, pushing those colours abit more would be cool. Also, although you captured the aspect of speed throughout your design, the actually creatures legs look abit static. Nice job regardless dude, great entry.

akgreene Looking prity bad ass, i wouldnt want to fuck with that creature. The main problem here is the values are off. Take your image into a greyscale to see beter what i mean. There doesnt seem to be a clear light source which is probably the reason for this. The shadow beheath the creature suggest the light is coming from the background, yet the highest values (the white bits) are coming from the front. Try to avoid the black lines too, they only confused your values further done in this manner. Try to add foreshortening elements too, like a foreground, mid ground and background to push the perspective and deph, this will help your design not looking flat. Hope these helped, keep it up dude.

scorge Great entry, i'd expected nothing less coming from yourself. Love the story telling elements and the perspective. Knowing your ablilities i think you could push this further. There needs to be more rim lighting on the back half of the creature from the sun, and its left middle foot looks off. I recon you could push the colour variation on the creatures body further too.

Abee Cool design, you captured the speed of the creature well too. Some tighter rendering and hard edges around the head ( the area of focus) would be cool to further explain the design of the creature. Its middle legs don't seem very useful and kinda look like they where pasted on for the sake of it bein 6 legged too. Finally some variation in colour would be nice, like some bounce light from the desert and deeper reds etc.

Very many good entries this round. Didn't get time to participate 'cause of CHOW - but this does mean I can be more unbiased for giving out critiques!

GregorKari gets my top vote for just the plain badassery of that creature. Very nice choice of pose that captures its playful temperament.

sozo - I love the extremely contrasty values with the contrasting blue and orange. It really conveys the harshness and realism of the landscape. Also, I adore that head design! Also, yours is one of the few creatures in this round where if you take away a pair of the legs it just wouldn't work - something I can't say for most of the other entries -- great achievement there.

Rob Powell - top-notch rendering as usual. I love the martian feel of the scene. The cave on a cliff is a nice concept. There's a big problem with the perspective though -- the size of the creature in the middle is very wrong. It should be much smaller -- compare the size of the rocks near the middle creature vs the far creature.. see what I mean? Anyway easy fix if you have that on a separate layer.

M!CK - great work man! What a fancy and playful creature you got there! Love the fairytale illustration style. Very daring use of purple. The creature does feel a little flat though -- unless that's the style you're going for (I always like to outline or decorative hatching to indicate a 2D style, but that's just me). And there is a weird shadow on its back -- what cast that shadow -- but I'm nitpicking now.

Mhugo - definitely one of the top works! Nice motion blur very dynamic composition. I feel like there are 2 light sources. One from the back and another from the top. I really dig the backlighting and transluscent glow though. Great achievement in portraying the albino-ness. I have no critiques for you.

Some general crits I tend to notice in peoples creatureCONCEPTS is that they sometimes go very generic. Especially this week.
How does it compensate for having 2 more legs? (that would actually make it slower)
What does the extralegs do?
If it uses all legs for groundcontact, does it run like a Dog or a dragonlizard?
Use BOTH description and image to explain your creatureconcept.

See purposes for your designchoices not just "it would look cool with more fins" haha!
