Flat Portfolio Options

When people send out flat portfolios for job applications or internships, what are their options for the actual flat portfolio booklet? All I know of are these things.


And they're so standard and plain that I can imagine that they'd be passed over without even glanced at or easily lost.

What are some other options for this?

It's about what's inside that counts, not the cover. Focus on the interior work.

I've been an art director, I've worked for big companies and looked at lots of portfolios and hired lots of artists. No one cares about the portfolio. The only thing that matters is the art itself. If you think it does you've already lost the battle.

I've been told that often, when the portfolio / CD cover you submit to a company is plain jane and ugly, the art directors sometimes won't even open it.
But since DPaint is the one who said it, I would believe ya!

It should be presentable and professional but worrying about making it unique or going out of your way to impress people is useless. The only portfolios I didn't open were the ones with crappy art on their covers. At the end of the day it is the art that gets you hired not the way it is presented.

Those Itoya Pro-Folios are perfect. The spine insert is replaceable, just design something nice and print it out if you're worried about "standard and plain."
And dpaint is absolutely right. As long as your portfolio isn't aggressively ugly/sloppy/unprofessional, it's what's in it that counts.

I understand! Really! xD And of course having good work is my priority. I was just looking for some different options. No harm in that.

I like those Itoya ones, easy to change and rearrange the contents...

As for presentation, I'm reminded of the Hildebrandt brothers... When they first presented their portfolio, they just brought in a giant garbage bag of sketches. But apparently those sketches appealed to the publisher, because they landed a gig doing Tolkein calendars.

So yeah. The stuff inside the portfolio counts more than the portfolio.
