Alan Lee is probably my favourite Tolkien artist. I've got a book or two with his art in it, and I've always been impressed by how he manages to get such depth in his watercolours. Reminds me a lot of some of the places I've seen in the countryside with a very mythical feel about it. I presume it's done in a more dry brush technique?

Lol, "judgemental".
So be it.
Happy to see it generate so much conversation, though!
Here's another one, you're getting famous!
My Self-Portraits
"Work for your self first. You can paint best the things you like or the things you hate. You cannot paint well when indifferent.
Express a mental opinion about something you are sensitive to in life around you. There is a profound difference between sensitivity and sentimentality."

Dusty, Laroccas number one PR guy!
The Larocca image above does seem to be a little too close to its source for my liking, but it’s also a relatively small part of the comic in which is appears, all told
"seem too close" Well considering there's a photoshop overlay showing a trace and he left out the details like the matted hair, where's the line now? Unless it was completely photoshopped in? Just seems silly to be too scared to say "yeah the image was heavily traced while leaving out some minor parts, however, it's only a small part of the story"
It's like the weasel words of "Persons of Interests" because "Suspect" is too harsh.

"Astronomy offers an aesthetic indulgence not duplicated in any other field. This is not an academic or hypothetical attraction and should require no apologies, for the beauty to be found in the skies has been universally appreciated for unrecorded centuries."
So it spreads http://www.comicscavern.com/news/201...n-the-act.html

I don't really have much of an opinion on it either way. I will say that stencilled street art doesn't appeal to me in the least bit and that goes for the Shepard Fairys of the world. Banksy has had a few messages that I was interested in through his work, but it still isn't something that I "ooo" and "aaaah" over.
Mostly, I understand that they need to get the art created quick so they don't get caught, but again it doesn't strike a chord with me in the same way that it does for other people.
As for other found object stuff and collage work it's hard for me to really even talk about it as that medium isn't something that I really do. I'm more of the drawing, sculpting, and painting kinda guy so I am pretty ignorant to the process and interest of found-object art.
yeah forget the duff banksy style, the point was thats picture of Fidel Castro wearing a t shirt featuring the iconic photo of Che Guevara.
So theres Che, the guy who photographed Che, the millions who used that photo, the image of Fidel, ie layers of imagery used without permission.
i guess you could say the result, at least here, isnt great art.. but the Picasso is a fine picture and uses the unmodified header of a newspaper as a key componant..

Well it's not being used commercially I'm guessing. That's the only issue for me. You can use whatever you want for personal learning/enjoyment. There is some issue when it's being exhibited I believe. But if it's on a building, most likely illegally as is the trend for street art it's not like they care either way.
I could draw every character from the Marvel and DC universe and paint them on a wall (no I couldn't in reality) but once again, street art and I couldn't care less about Copyright or IP
What would Caravaggio do?

Ah never heard if Banksy was paid for his street art.
The cnn link seems to be dead already.
Jamal Igle's is talking about this on his blog.

Something I find interesting...a lot of these comic sites keep snipping off the most damning part of the original image, the 50% opacity that proves that it's 100% traced. This leads to misinformation by the time it gets to the commentaries as people defend their right to use reference.
I mean, I totally understand that. You feel that you are under fire because you heavily use tracing or referencing in your workflow so you must defend yourself.
But I think the issue is a little different. People keep bringing up the Drew Struzans but they are forgetting the most important detail there. They are masters, not the "everyman artist" that ends up drawing a comic. I see the potential for a huge attrition to quality as young artists start trying to break in and realize that the thing that sells is tracing and photo-realism. They see that everyone gets work doing it this way and they do it themselves before they learn how to put that 'artistic imprint' onto their own work. As we all say, "learn to do it the right way, then you can take your shortcuts".
Young artists look toward their idols (which might be a great artist, but might also just be whoever is popular at the time) and their art is often influenced by them. Mid/Late-nineties Liefeld fever anyone? Everyone's art looked like that guy.
I probably should not have been so sensationalistic with the original image's "shame on you", but in this age of "TL;DR", I felt a point needed to be made to generate discussion, and I think that worked.
The people don't understand that the issue is not that he traced but that he traced an image that doesn't belong to him.
It's like they don't care about the rights of an author. Is there no hope?
Do whatever you want when it comes to production art I guess.
ME3 Spoilers in image!

The game came out yesterday, and I'm already getting spoiled on the ending cutscene? *sigh*.
But anyway...yeah, game artists definitely pull from google and often. I've done it, too. The idea is usually to find sites that offer free textures (mayang was my godsend) or alter it to the point where it was completely different.
Still, those are really cheesy, too.
Not that I care about mass effect but you should probably take down the one with all the spoilers.
I made that image a link for those who don't want to be spoiled.

Good lord.
I'm flabbergasted.
I'm amused that some of the birds were left in as bits of scattering rubble. And since they painted over the lifted foot, he looks like he's missing half a leg. Now that I think about it, I think that should be part of the plot. It'd be like Planet Terror the game.
