What do you prep your paper with for the silverpoint? Keep up the drawings!

Hi all- Thank you for the kind words, they're much appreciated. =)

cquinn- those two drawings were both done on gessoed paper, two or three coats of it.

I have more work to show, but it's saying my posts need to be viewed and ok'd first. More work on the way soon =)

really nice work, man. Your value range is really nice and you're getting some very rich shadows and effective contrasts. That seated girl second from the the top has some really intense light that looks great. Keep posting!

Great stuff, man, and thanks for stopping by my Richer thread. Your drawings are both beautiful and convincing in their expression of form. I think the plant study early on is especially really well observed and elegantly composed. I'd like to see more work like the "raised shoulder" study. That helped me a lot.

Your studies in graphite such as the bat and the heads remind me of Barry Moser's illustrations for Dante's "Divine Comedy", work I haven't thought about in decades, but nevertheless exerted a strong influence on me at the time. The illos were very subtle wash drawings, but I see a similar joining of authority and elegance in the work you've posted here. I'm looking forward to more.

The painting is an oil sketch of sorts I worked on while I was studying with Odd Nerdrum, self-portrait. Playing around with his palette and a bit of the technique.

some silverpoint sketches from life, I call them sketches since they're much shorter drawings that I usually do with silverpoint- these are 30 min to an hour and a half.

You use light to setup a mood beautifully. Something about your drawings remind me of Daumier's, you might want to check him out, why because he has caught many moods and expressions using light pushing the viewer to complete the form . His work might be of interest to you. As I look through your drawing I see improvement you're adapting well. It was nice to visit here.

I m digging these 2 the most in the latest ones. Obv not the most important questions to be asking but I curious as to what grades of graphite pencils you are using and what you use to blend.

You ve gotten me wanting to give metal point a go btw. Something intriguing about drawing with metal imo.

cquinn, thanks- I use 4b sometimes, but have been stopping at 2b, and using hb, 2h, and 6h. The brand of pencil matters a lot, as no brand is the same, one 2h isn't the same as another 2h from a different brand. To blend, I use a paper stump, and a rag. I also use water from time to time to mix up the mark making, and I make sure to erase quit often to build form back and forth.

Two new quick sketches in red pencil. I've collected a few ecorche heads that my classmates and I have sculpted at the New York Academy, and sometimes I draw them as a warm up.
