    Icon Something is wrong here...

I was looking up 2 point perspective videos and I watched this one which seemed to make sense but towards the end the house this guy draws looks very wrong to me. The roof looks like it's not following the perspective. Am I just not seeing it right or is it really not drawn correctly?

    The video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=felys-u4nfk

he does all this technical stuff with the perspective and acts all anal about it, then goes and twirls his pencil for a bush, and almost literally scribbles a tree in..... Nice.

Btw, he followed perspective, but he made the house lopsided by not making the left part of the house high enough. Also I think he could've made the house look a little bigger at the far end. If he'd used a few more lines, he could've done it very easily. He definitely distorted it a little though.

I love at the end it shows how he set it up using what he'll probably have for breakfast!

It's very sloppily done. The far end of the roof leading to the right vanishing point is at a different angle to the closer end.

the first thing thats quite confusing is that on one part of the drawing he shows one-point perspective and on the other part he shows two-point perspective....so combined everything seems a bit of. then i think he didn't care too much about the vertical lines and the windows etc...so it looks a bit whacky. and then both vanishing points are so close together, so the perspective on the house is a bit extreme (compared to the size of the house).

if you are looking for a good video on perspective: get the TAD downloads with carl dobsky.

Yeah I think I'll do that. I'm just happy that I'm not losing it. In theory it makes sense but it just didn't look like it did haha. Thanks everyone.

There are several inexpensive books on perspective that would be better to rely on than youtube vids.

One thing about youtube. There's some good tutorials.... but there is a lot.... .... a lot..... ... of bad ones. Even worse many of them have very pretentious attitudes like they're the shit.

The left side of the roof bottom is not on the same plane as it's right side. If it is meant to be on the same plane, the perspective is wrong. It's also possible that the left side of the roof is meant to be lower then the right side. (I didn't watch the whole video, so I don't know if there are any more clues of that was intentional or an oopsie)

Learn the fundamentals of perspective, and let your reasoning do the rest. If you're stuck, look through art books on perspective, but if these art books do not include the informations you are looking for, it is most likely unnecessary for an artist.

I actually watched that video. What was infuriating was the part where he says re the spacing of the phone poles: "you can just fake it."

    No. You. Can't.

Geometrically projecting a line of poles into the distance is an elementary skill taught in the standard quality books on perspective.

It's not that hard to learn. And, it would seem to be the type of skill people would be looking to learn in researching perspective on the web-- not amateurish garbage like this.

The first thing that was wrong was the lack of a ruler. A ruler for perspective is ESSENTIAL.

    This. Very irritating video.
Definitely learn from people that have a clue, not people like this.

What's more sad, the tutorial or the comments?

Wow! U made perspective drawing look so easy... I will grab a pencil & a paper right now and try drawing some exterior.. This tutorial is awesome! Thx..
    (31 thumbs up)

My art teacher showed my class this and everyone said the shadow behind the house ruined it... oh well hehe
I'm styudying that in my Fundamentals of Drawing 101 class at Ai
nono itis 2 point in go to hell
why the heck did you draw the roads i think the drawing i did in 2 point perspective was waaaaayyyyy better and not even in 2 point that is one point
Watching this shit pisses me off. Hate the way he makes it look so simple.
HOW DID YOU DO THIS WITHOUT STRAIGHT EDGE!? SO PRO.
can i just say i searched for this on youtube because i am doing this at school and you have really helped me! thanks it was careless, but looked amazing !
WOW!!! that worked SO good!!! thankyou! ilove this person...........but what was with the end and all that stuff on the table?!! other than that... AMAZING!!
...and on and on and on.
    My Sketchbook

And then God said, "Let us make man in our likeness and our image. Let us make him ridiculously hard to draw so that poor artists everywhere will have to spend 10,000+ hours failing repeatedly before they can begin to capture the form and likeness onto a two-dimensional surface." And there was man. And it was good. And artists everywhere lost their minds.

This was okay until he started drawing the shadow behind the house...I don't know, this tutorial is not a great one. He doesn't make it easy for people who are just learning to draw.

I think you can do better than this video just by printing out any basic 1-, 2- and 3-point perspective tutorial and then going outside. It's going to be a pretty rare artist that doesn't have a building, road and light/telephone poles right outside their door.
