here's an image that I painted in about 30 minutes that is an example of using the yellow, red, green hues to diversify your color pallet. Hope this helps.Name: pretty girl in purple colored.jpg

Love your life drawings; those graphite portraits are delicious..very clear, very solid, very atelier-feeling. Your level of finish is very high too, which is something I admire cuz I lack it completely @3@
You are doing a lot of cool things, keep it up! Can't wait to see the finished painting for the above, the thumbs look very cool :)

@ jesseM Hey, thanks. Let's keep pushing the limit together. It's nice to see someone go out of their way to be nice. It also feels nice to know that someone enjoys and looks forward to seeing my work.

I really like the composition in the asian village -sketch. There was nice sense of 3-point perspective and scale in the first version, but in this latest color wip some of it is missing. I think you might have lost much of the simplicity that made the original powerful, by having your color (especially red) and strong contrasts applied evenly in too many areas. Maybe you want to exaggerate the height of the buildings by reducing the contrast and saturation on top of them. Also in the original the characters drawn in red worked well as focal points, now this effect is somewhat lost. You have probably thought about this already though, so maybe this is not relevant - anyway, it's going to be great when finished for sure!

@loudlikenature- thanks, really want to make this piece be peaceful. but I think for it to be peaceful I'm going to need to desaturate some things for the focal point to be more evident and for the mood to be correct and for the story to read well.

@R-K: hey, thanks for dropping by and giving me your very good thoughts. I was thinking the same thing, just very subtly and it never formulated into an articulate thought. I guess what that means, is that I felt it in my gut but I didn't truly know what was wrong. Thank you for pointing it out! I'll be working on simplifying the piece more and more as time goes on. But yes, I agree that I have lost a lot of the simplicity and I'll need to come back to that point for the story to really resonate with people.

Thanks again to both of ya'll. very helpful.

I agree on that, more muted/desaturated colours will bring a calmer mood, at the same time, if it's not in a right balance of saturation then the painting will loose the original sense of style you have. I'm torn over which one i'd prefer, but i trust your rendering judgement. Did i mention i was subbing?

    Dilemma.

Yeah, I'm very torn over which to make it, saturated or just with very few brushstrokes and have it be black and white with red as the main actors in the painting. UGH. I could always try pursuing both!? haha. anyways, hope all is well with you. thanks for the subbing.

Here's where I got with this.. haven't made much progress but I've been really fighting the colors and strokes in wanting to simplify this painting. I know I could use fewer strokes but the color itself contradicts the simplicity of the original concept.Name: gnomon week 6 thumbnails copy CROPPED do over merged v3 copy v2 SMALLESTEST.jpg

I think it looks lovely and you shouldn't worry about the simplicity so much. I do agree though that the fading the shadows into a more muted/grayer colour scheme worked into your advantage in this piece, it really contributed to a more scenic and serene painting.

life drawing blue and purple pen and ink

Hey everybody, I figure why not use this website once again for studies. I like the community and presence of the sketchbook in here. Anyways, here's a life drawing, blue and purple pen and ink. Will be doing a lot more of these. Need to focus on efficiency or economy of line and to focus on where to use purple and where to use blue. will be doing more studies to understand these colors better. I will be doing research as well. No underdrawing was used. This was simply an exercise and test to see if i could actually draw in pen. Found out it is freaking hard. Cheers to endless exploration. @freshfool, thanks man. gotta gogogogoooo.

wanted to understand design more so i studied one of ryan wurmser's drawings. hour and half study. vine charcoal and graphite on charcoal paper (don't know specifics...)I think i needed different paper to understand some of the more subtle values and line.
