Morning!!!lovely mate . One thing to think about is where you lead the eye. By putting high contrast [the distance between dark and bright value] in the shoulderpad the eye is moving over there and not in the face. If in the end you decide that the shoulderpad is the dominant element, then make sure everything else helps say the same thing. Different kind of contrasts is what adds interest to a work and makes the viewer enjoy the work. For example if you lowered the contrast in the shoulderpad with a quick big soft-brushstroke an you added some highlights on the face, our eye will immediately move there.

Salut, je voulais te dire que j'aime beacoups tes études et en ce qui concerne les critiques (sur le digital) je te conseillerais de plus marquer les ombres et les lumières afin de mieux démarquer les zones et les volumes d'éviter de faire trop de dégradé pour les ombres, ce qui est très vite arrivé si on se laisse porter par PS. By the way, I think I should have spend more time on the design of the guy, I would have reduced the size of the shoulderpad, looks too big now.. Will do better on the next personal piece

So, some stuff

The grizzly-thing finished (only greyscale, I wanted to move on something else, on which I'll work in value then work details in colors ), I'm not really satisfied with him but I feel that I've learned a lot !



A crapy watercolor study



Hampton studies, applied with photos (blue) and from imagination (green), I tried to be very quick to make those gesture but it wasn't a good idea, the results are of bad quality, I'm continuing on the next chapter and (volumes) I'll be more precise in my lines and less speedy !

lovely mate!!! Since the brightest spots since were on the shoulderpads it was a good thing that you added more details there. In focal points there must be details to keep the eye and then other subordinate areas with less detail to help the eye rest. Even at that level its always a play of contrast between different aspects. big shape vs small shape, bright shape vs dark shape, busy shape vs non busy shape etc etc etc etc. A good combination of contrasted stuff will produce something pleasing. A way to think when stuck somehow is what there would be in reality that would make it feel right? Things will become more visible soon, lets keep up , go on the next one and keep going

Some new stuff, I'm not posting yet my new personal project because I have just finished the reasearch/dirty sketches step to know better where I'm heading, I will post it next time when the lines will be finished

So, first a new value study (Tomorrow morning I will apply a part of what I learned about leather and make a texture sphere !) :



Color study, I make very few environments so I'll do some studies before trying to do some from imagination but I really need to work on it if I want to do complete illustrations and concepts !



A quick sketch, I wanted to study how "classical" armors looked like but imagining a pose, I ruined the paper of bad quality so I couldn't put some shadows on him... ^^

great studies. In the greyscale character i think it misses some limited amount of soft overlays to create some smooth spots inside, mostly in shadowed parts. The enviro is great lovely strokes, great contrast and edges. However if not visible in the photo, it could use some more atmospheric perspective mostly in the shaded part that goes behind the rock towards the blue background. Also lovely study with this armored char, however the equal amount of detail all over the place makes the parts less readable. Keep up the great work mate!!!!

Hey mate thanks a looooot ! I really appreciate your feedback it is helping me so much for learning from my mistakes !

Here are some studies, still have some things to fix on the personal stuff so it will be posted tomorrow I think..

A new landscape color-study... I felt this one was harder than the previous one, the colors on the stones and on the grass are hard to catch, I will have to practice more !



An attempt at making a texture sphere (my first one, leather :s) It's quite a bad one, I think my pleats are too big..

Pas évident de faire des commentaires interessants, en tout cas ton bras d'après bridgman fonctionne bien, je dirais pour ton ours que tu as bien assuré. tu devrais peut etre moins marquer les rides d'expressions de ton ours, la fourrure est quelque chose de souple et rempli les "trous" par sa texture et dessous, il y a l peau qui "flotte" sur les muscles, tu as peut etre deja pris le temps de sentir la peau d'un chien quand tu le caresse, je pense que tu vois ce que je veux dire...

lovely!!! Green is the hardest color. Anyway keep in mind to depict atmospheric perspective a little more exagerrated. Colors as they recede back and back, they become less saturated and they will get the color of the background more and more inside them as they go back. Also you need more unity. Everything will contain a little of its neighbor.
If this is from a photo or something i would try an experiment although i am not sure about it. Try to see if it is possible to keep your eye focused only in one point of the picture you are painting from. Where our eye focused plays a part, for example i think if you were looking at the green when you watched the image, your brain made the green brighter and more saturated to make it stand out as a focal point. So what happens if you keep changing focus points when painting from an image? maybe we overstate everything? dont know, i also have to research this myself.

lovely mate, keep up the female illustration. Dont worry that much about her now, try to beautify it with good values. Keep pushing the values and when you feel like you are stucked at some point tell me and we can check why and what can be done. This will also help myself.

Okay so I'm currently working on the values but I'll post a wip next time because I don't feel it enoughly worked for reposting a wip now...

I think I'm too slow in my way of working and I'm zooming too often and too much while painting, I think I should be more efficient in my brush strokes and more global... I HAVE TO WORK MORE & MORE EFFICIENTLY IF I WANT TO LEVEL UP !

Failed portrait, I'm going to work this field a lot because I really suck at it.. I will try to be more efficient !

the lack of smooth transitions between the shades/values whatever it's really called is kind of unnerving when watching it.It's just to abrupt, no middle ground. I like your linework and pencils, they show understanding of form. Keep at it. You should spend a whole weekend on photoshop, and painting whatever you want to draw there instead of doing it in pencils. I did that and it made understand colour alot better. It was shocking how fast that went.

So, I've been off during quite the whole week (was on Paris for 3 days for rushing museums but couldn't sketch there because all the museums, apart from the Louvres, were closing at 5 or 5.30 pm ! I wanted to visit the most I could.. )

I've worked on the girl, finished the greyscale and tried to go on the color step but I've spent quite a time playing with the "adjustment layers", modes, trying things, searchings tuts etc... I learned a lot but I'm not satisfied with the result, I don't really know if I've done it well, I'll see if I keep working on her or if I switch on a single character to be sure to understand well how to go on colors from greyscale... Any help or advices are very welcome
