    Eelisk's sketches, wips & things

    EDIT:

    Hop!

Decided to open one of these now that I'm waiting for the results from the uni I just applied into. All of the pictures below have been created after the submission of portfolio, so I surely hope I dont keep getting the good ol' feeling of "dang, just a few more days and I could have included this one too!", but let's get onto it.

    First off, two reference practises.

Not to forget a real quickie speedpainting I just did for a warmup.

    Enjoy!

Another photo ref. I'll be holding out from full-fledged personal works for a while and working with landscape references & quick thumbnails instead. Let's see how far that kind of practice gets me.

And also, the tower shot was kinda finished. I'll probably shoot it through some criticism machine and improve it up.

I don't really do creatures nor characters much, so this was a nice take-off from landscapes. Will probably continue later on.

Hey bud, I hear you're going to be joining Wheels and I in our little quest for self improvement. Welcome! So far I'm liking the quick snowy landscape in post #1 and the seascape in post #4. Your still life is looking good as well. I'd love to see you do a few more of those to keep building your understanding of light, shadow and form. I'm hoping to get a few done over the next few days as well, so we could tackle them together . As Wheels said above is there anything you'd like to work on for your first group piece with us? We made a list each of topics that interested us which has been really helpful for plotting out our future projects and identifying some weak spots in our work. Looking forward to seeing some more work from you soon!

Hey man, When I take a look at your body of work, it's all Environments so that leaves a lot of ground for us to cover when giving out assignments. Do you want to tackle the same challenge I gave Ebersol for this week?( 'Design a Jetpack") or do you want a different one?
Let me know and we'll take it from there.

@Eb: Thanks for the warm welcome! Indeed, some additional still lives wouldn't hurt. They don't take that long to make either so why not. Should we do them from the same picture or set up own stills? Both work for me. I'll probably be doing it digitally, since I don't have any paint left right now. Want to study 'em with colour.

@Wheel: I'll gladly join into the jetpack design challenge this week. Even though I'm currently focusing on environments it doesn't hurt to make something different from time to time. Will come up with a few sketches tomorrow.

If Environments is the only thing you want to focus on, that is cool but I think you could benefit from branching out as it will all help your environments in the long run.
    Let's see those sketches!

Wow! Yeah...nice environments! You've inspired me....gotta start doing some myself!

Here we go boys, I called it The Daedelus Workshop Study Group and put it in the Mentoring forum. Sound good? I didn't go with the Emerald Daggers Idea as it's been done and we are unique! This is going to be fun!

I took a quick break from ID practice to do a landscape:

Guess I could do one ref more & loads of thumbnails and then try out a personal work again just to see how it goes.

Hey mate, how're you going with your ID development? For those still life's that we spoke about earlier why don't we work from the same images so we'll then be able to see the errors in each others work? Here are some links: still life gallery one 35 examples of still life photography Maybe we can start with the top image on the first link and work our way through from there?

Great work on your landscape. You've done a really good job capturing the textures of the different surfaces in the scene. The only thing I'd look at improving for the next image would be some stronger value contrast for the different planes of the landscape. You've created some nice light and shadow in the middleground but the foreground could be brought a little further forward and the background pushed back a bit. Great stuff though!

Let's get cracking on these still life's and jetpacks!

P.S. I'm going to try and get the keep the still life's to about 30 mins each and just focus on black and white for now while I'm starting off, but feel free to do whatever suits you.

Hop! I'll be posting the first batch of jetpack sketches later today if everything goes well.

Indeed, it's best to work from the same images. From top to bottom sounds goody. I'll try to limit myself to about 30 minutes too, should suit well. Will begin tomorrow, let's post em up to the thread wheel made to the community section when ready.

Thanks for the notes on the landscapes. Contrast is indeed real though nut to crack for me, and thus all of them turn kinda grayish. That's something to really work on next indeed.

I was playing good ol' original Rayman again today and just had to draw something related to it. I do characters very, very very rarely so I don't really take it that seriously. Thus it felt good to just let go and scribble it up.

On the note, maybe next time I'll finaly remember not to start painting on white background layer.

Thanks pills. They are just studies, so I didn't really "finish" any of them. Good notion though.

Here's some black and white stills from daedalus study group in the community mentoring section. I'm aware of the problem with the backgrounds, I'll try to remember to paint some simple n clean the next time!

Aside from Daedalus studies I am trying to nail out some personal landscape work that isn't from image ref. Decided that it might be a time for slightly harder colour scheme, even though I don't feel that confident with colours yet.

The black n white thumbnail itself ain't that bad, but I am having hard time with the colour sketch as always. Maybe I should be bolder? any suggestions? Could also be that I am still not plotting stuff in relation with the light source. Gotta look into it and keep scheming & studying!

Alright, here's a commissioned band cover and another landscape thumbnail that I'll hopefully bring to full fledged illustration in a few days.

I'm trying to grasp the essence behind graphical space before moving on to more focused studies like animals, human shape etc. I'll want to focus on the bigger picture first.

I'll still have to place the gap in the (to be) clouds so that it reaches behind the watchtower. Should make pretty dramatic event.
