    Raine's Sketchbook

So I've been here and there on conceptart posting some work. But it's time I got started on a sketchbook! There are definitely things I need to work on so any comments and critiques would be greatly appreciated.

Here is some work for starters. You can find more of my work here: Blog

    Lovely Sketchbook!
The main issue you have right now is how flat your paintings look.
You don't think outside of the outlines that you're painting in.
You should break up shadow and light into bigger chunks instead of shading inside of outlines.
And it may sound trivial but big differences in value are more important than small differences in value.
Especially in your faces you exaggerate tiny differences in value and forget about the big picture.
You also seem to struggle with perspective quite a bit.
In the library image the book shelves, the floor, the table and the girl all indicate different perspectives. I know Free transform can be tempting to try really difficult perspectives but try to stick to one.
Your studies are in good proportion but also look quite flat.

    I hope that helps

Thanks for your advice Xelar, it does help! Yeah, lighting is one of my biggest weak spots.

I've really got to practice resisting the line and trying to achieve that shiny, luminous quality. Lighting, anatomy, and perspective I feel are some of the things I need to work on the most.

I think Merl Strep has more than 3 fingers, and her jaw is down more than in the drawing.

Ha! Yeah she needs another finger.
    Edit: fixed her right hand
Also, here's another practice I'm starting. Going to try to avoid using lines completely
