CArbonBased Sketchbook.

Hello everyone.
My name is Dmitry. I hail from NS, Canada and I like to draw a bit in my spare time.
Half the time I have no idea what I'm doing. Hence any critiques/advice/comments will be greatly appreciated.

Apologies for occasional uncleanness of the sketches. Still messing with the scanner trying to figure it out fully.

good start, very interesting to look through, your pencil work is cleaner than you think, also good muscle studies.

One thing I would say is experiment with different mediums eg. pen, ink, pastel etc. You can get surprising results.

Hi there, you got some nice stuff here. For figure drawing I suggest trying capturing skeletal structure underneath muscles. Try not to decide outline too soon, and start from feet, really focus defining gravity and sense of weight balance. Sort of like...drawing from inside, not with outlines.

On the other side I love your contour drawings. Especially the long haired girl (sitting on the floor looking down) and the guy with helmet above. I like how your lines are subtle and not overpowering in these two drawings. It looks like you are searching the form freely with lines, and that's very nice. The opposite is the horned muscle man with ninja sword. Looks like you defined the outline without studying skeleton too soon, and losing the sense of what you are doing with lines.

Your rendering skills are amazing. Really like your studies. Just recommend you to keep doing studies. Also wanna see paintings! If you didnt do any, doing it will broaden your skills enormous.

Hunin - Thanks. You are right. I virtually have no experience with any other media. Will work on that once I get through with my no good paper sketchbook. Will try some watercolors on my new heavier paper sketchbook.

raqmo - Thank you! I love long crits! Interesting how you took notice of two sketches I myself didn't think much of.I had some good refs for them though. Probably why they look *correct*. But that's great! I do exactly opposite of what you suggested, worrying more about details. All the freaking time.. Gesture drawings are especially a pain in that regard. I will try to slow down and look at the form.
PontusEuxinus - I will try to get more studies done on different subjects. As to paintings, I did maybe 3 watercolor *paintings* way back, I liked it and it was such a different thing to do. I will try to resume on that. Thank you for a visit.

Some strong pencil drawings here, I especially like your creatures/ animals, you've put some real thought into the skeletal/ muscle structure of your beasties. I also really like the skeleton-style characters in your latest post, they are a lot of fun to look at

One thing I would say is to draw people from life, your caricatures of people will improve no end if you learn from life, keep up the good work and keep posting

I'm astonished by your sketches. In my humble opinion your attention to detail and shading is just perfect. I especially like skulls and creatures, they're very realistic, attention-drawing, and full of great ideas. I must admit I just saved some of your work to my hard drive, to learn from you

I just couldn't tell what I like the most, there's so much to like!
What pencil/s do you use if I may ask?

the values! What steps guide you in your head when working with the values? maybe it's wrong question, but anyway.. give me some advice for practice or homework to reach that skill

Lovin' the graphite work as usual. However, how about some environmentals or landscapes? I know from personal experience that softer graphite tends to get uncontrollably smeary with larger pieces, but a bit of a challenge is always useful for developing, right?

Your pencil work is really quite amazing! I love you marks and the value and the detail! It's super awesome. I dunno what advice to give that hasn't been given, but I will humbly agree with the above poster! I would LOVE to see some environments or a painting!

Hunin - Thank you for visiting again. I had great fun with skeletal things, glad you liked them.
I shall try to draw from rl. Although I wouldn't say I was aiming for caricatures in any of my stuff.

Ninsei - Thank you, that's nice to hear. If you can learn something from me that's great, but there is SO many better and super awesome people around here, to learn from, rather than me. Nevertheless thanks again for such a nice comment.
Uhh I'm using pilot and staedtler 0.5mm, 0.3mm, 2H, HB, 2B mechanical pencils. Just something I like to use personally, because they are comfortable in my hand. I heard some people say that wooden pencils or led holders are the only correct way to go about drawing, so I wouldn't recommend using what I use.

Ells - Thank you for taking your time and visiting! That's very encouraging to hear from someone that tamed graphite to such an epic level. Thanks.

eclip-se - Thank you for visiting. : ) Uhh well that's a good question that I'm not sure how to answer. I guess it's about looking for lightest areas first and then I gradually shade from there. But I don't really think about it, I just look and try to really see.
Haha no homework for you. Just have fun once in a while, along with doing studies, which you do a lot of already.

Thanks for the comment on my sketchbook! I've got no criticism here, honestly, other than it'd be awesome to see some colour. This is really nice stuff, and the Adventure Time fanart made me smile.

What a great sketchbook--your stuff is so meticulous. So much too look at here and enjoy, but for some reason I like the little sketch of the two skeletons interacting (kissing?). I just thought it was cool that you could show emotion in a little sketch that had nothing except bones.

This is an extremely cool sketchbook, I could get lost for hours looking at this stuff. How long have you been drawing for? Also how long do you spend on these pieces? I agree with Cider, all of your stuff is incredibly meticulous. I will try and follow this sketchbook very closely.
