    IOW #16: Mayan Ritual

Illustration of the Week #16: Mayan Ritual

This is a one and a half week topic.

    Topic
This weeks topic is Mayan Ritual. I suggest doing a bit of research for this one before beginning...as always Wikipedia is a good starting point:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_religion

You are free to paint any ritual of the ancient Mayans. I'm expecting lots of juicy pictures that show some understanding of the manner in which the ritual was performed, along with proper clothing, architecture etc.

    Deadline
The deadline is Sunday 5th of Ferbruary, 23:59 GMT

Count me in, question thou, being that Mayan beliefs vary from ancient to Futuristic, IE : theory about them learning Gold mining from Aliens (Celestine prophecy), and the whole 2012 calender thing, can it be very Conceptual?, or we keeping it strictly to Ancient times only ?.

Along those lines, I have a question. There is a lot of mention of mythical things. The most interesting being animal-people! Can this illustration include spirits, animal-people, demons, and such like that? That is to say, can I illustrate a ritual but spirits and such may be present and taking part in the ritual, etc.

    This stuff is very interesting.

Devilfruit: Those examples you gave...well, I have never heard of the gold mining alien thing before. A bit of Googling shows it to be some pseudoscience presented in some television show. And the 2012 apocalypse actually isn't in the Mayan calendar if you do a bit of reading. So I'd say please avoid those topics. Basically if it is actually part of their beliefs you can illustrate it (various gods, or whatever), but not if it is some sort of conspiracy theory thing that some modern people have come up with.

Artfix: Feel free to include some of those spirits.

I'm suprised that more people aren't jumping on this one, what with the ancient theme lending itself to dramatic interpretation and all?

Here's another scrap from me, all will be revealed (but not today!).

"In the Classic Maya period (from about the year 250 to 900), commoners regularly "terminated" their homes, razing the walls, burning the floors and placing artifacts and occasionally human remains on top before burning them again."

Despite it being finished, I didn't get this in on time thanks to a few tech. gremlins - but here's the finished entry from me if anyone's interested.

(Looks like the attachment manager is not letting me upload for some reason, but the image in question can still be viewed here)
