I SAW THE SKY - A Short CG Film

I SAW THE SKY is a short animated film that I've working for a couple of months now, its about a world where the is sky blacked out and the sun never shines.. the main character (Lisa) is a young girl who dies after being imprisoned by strange human like creatures that destroyed the cities of the earth and imprisoned all humanity, she is then resurrected after a couple of decades... and the rest you will find out. Pics of some of work iv been doing the city scape is fig 10 in the story board.

And this is lisa the main character

This is where the original idea for the for the enviroment came from, its an old WIP of mine and the full city will look a bit like this.

A story board of scene 1

I'm about to start working on the bedroom from fig 1-9 This is an idea of what I want it to look like, the animations set in the future by the way.

Its pretty empty right now so I'm gonna add some stuff in it (girl stuff) but need some ideas over that.

I don't really know anything about interior lighting, so if anyone has here advice over this please help, right now I'm using 3 MR Omni lights... the seemed to light the character best. I tried vray lights at first but that didnt go too well.

This is how the character is lit up.
and how the character is lit

Here's what iv got so far, I'm trying to give the room a bit of character... Lightings the big problem here,.. the animation is dark but I'm arguing with myself about whether to light up room or give a dark feeling... the main character isn't exactly a very happy person so dark room would fit her personality better... if I go for dark what I'll need some good colors for the lights, ive look at some refs but this is where I mainly want some help so plz

    BlackOut city

Taken a bit of a break from the room, working in the city, which is also gonna be showing just outside the room, i placed some low res buildings randomly around the city and used greeble for the lower buildings, I'm about to start working on some high res, more unique models now

I really prefer the darkly lit room. I like the way the light comes from the back of the character and bounces off the wall. Think about where the light fixtures would be in the room (or outside). Put yourself in the shoes of your character and think about what lights would she actually turn on. Of course, like in movies, you can (have to) cheat your lights to make your characters pop out.
I think you're going to have to do a rough storyboard from your scene so you can place your cameras properly with the lighting... You could always use these to start some layout as the current drawn storyboard doesn't have any lighting or composition information.

    Good luck!

    Hi Martin,

This project looks huge. I don't suppose you've thought about collaborating with others over at CGTalk?
I saw your thread there, and I just thought it be good to have collaboration partners that specialise in animation and cloth, or which ever you feel needs attention.

You're well rounded, but the learning curve, I think can be eased with some collab partners near by.

All the best on this one, mate.
    Cheers from Aussie.

Your character's face is definitely falling into the uncanny valley. It just looks really odd. You might try making it more cartoony to prevent that.

Thanks guys, @Vardo I have thought of that and actually I'm planning on giving the sound aspect to someone over there, as for the animation will see about that, there still along way to go and help would be great. I'm gonna remodel the main character cause a new subcharacter I did is looking way better than her. Also redone the main city.

    some updates

I think I'll redo the main character, the projects gonna take longer than expected anyway and remodeling and rendering her on the first scene won't set me back more than 2 weeks since I've got the whole process down now on the back of my hand. the result will certainly be worth the time. But I will get into the new environments before I do that.

First scene http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7Oo-Ri2BVY (old!!! to be reworked)

Hey guys, it's been a while but I'm back on this, I just had to take a short break and get some money in my pocket... I've been redoing the main character, gonna rerender the whole first scene,.. modify the enviroments to be a bit more cyber punk. But for now here's the how she looks... satisfied with the body but that's not the final face, she needs to be HOT!!!

Perhaps you could relinquish the realistic face altogether. It still falls in the uncanny valley.
