calling it "finished" time to do water droplet studies so i can understand how it works on her body!

@Greenhouse: Thanks , I use photoshop's default brushes, since I don't know how to download those special brushes D:.
Basically, getting "cleaner" strokes is just practice. Practice is Excellence.
Best to you on your endeavors!

Hi all, so I am figuring out another style of learning. I started a little bit on this practice with the animals and the point is to stare at the picture and make mind's eye images and then draw without looking at the reference. It's a bit hard, but practice makes perfect eh?

I've held off on the water droplet studies. I need to get my ass on that damnit..

I'm happy cause I bought some vitamin A and beta-carotene supplements for my eyes because they are so tired lol. Thank you universe!

some reeealllyyy touuughh stuff for me!

So, I learned from this, that blocking out the foreground, mid ground and background. Things fade away. No color picking...

Going to read up more on it, any advice on how to look on backgrounds are greatly apperciated.

things i notticed about the smiling face:

the end of the cheeks do not touch the edges of the lips, instead there is a slightly diagnoal vertical line that almost connects to it.

The start of the cheeks start at the top of the nose.

nothing special here. Just baby steps. I am trying to view images as 3-d forms, sort of did it here. Well, I have a bunch in my sketchbooks. Cant unfortunately upload!!

I am trying to think in my later drawings and works. create large masses and think in 3-d blocks.

you have some really nice studies!

Uhm watch the last piece, the anatomy seems kinda broken the hand that's higher seems to bug for her body, her torso seems kinda short, and her head is really pushed back. You have some skill for sure, just keep working and polishing that skill!

Great stuff Marlo, the figure with the pick background has some anatomy issues like how the breast is sitting on the ribcage.

Good to see your studies :]

I'd really love to see a few of facial expressions, however. Your faces tend to have similar expressions. Try to branch out a little more in that area.

Hi plucifer, thanks for your critique. I'll try making different expressions! Do you know what is causing them to be so similiar??

also sketches, the one with the gesture is the one i did today. i havent been drawing my sketchbook lately since i've been working on my portfolio pieces for college Q.Q

    oh gosh feet.

    Well,
from what I picked up in the thread is the most common expressions I see are the typical happy, sad, neutral, and I believe one mad. Mostly happy and neutral. I see a lot of round cheeks and pushed up lip lines. xD I would adore to see some rage in there. Draw some gaunt and square faces too. Get out of those round cheeks. Draw fear. Insanity. Pretending to be happy. Pain. Defeat. Go beyond the generics.

I have a great book recommendation if need be. I found it at Barnes and Noble and it should be able to get ahold of. It is called Facial Expressions by Mark Simon. It has a butt load of visual reference from all ranges of expressions as well as various models of different face structure and ethnicity.

If you can't afford a book, look in to Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. Both of those men worked heavily in the Silent Era of film and are geniuses in regards to facial expressions and body languages. Really, just explore the silent era period. It'll help gain a feel for expressions. This was a time when stories could not be told through words after all. :]
