    Sketchbook O painterlyness (updated MARCH 8th 2012)

HI guys,i'm Nubian.I'm an aspiring Animation Director.I dabble in a lil bit of everything.

i'll start of with some thingies from mid december 2011 that I ended up scrapping, but i'll probably come back to em later.

The first is supposed to be dark, but it may appear waaaay to dark depending on if your screen is calibrated properly.

More soon guys, comments and crits really appreciated.

No such thing as too much attitude.

Some really great stuff so far! I just love that first portrait especially. Keep updating!

We are cups, constantly and quietly being filled. The trick is, knowing how to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff out.

I agree your first piece is amazingly beautiful.
I'll definitely be keeping watch on this sketchbook!

On your most recent piece only thing that bothers me is the fact that the hair looks extremely flat and not apart of her head.

On that face study, the features aren't lined up, especially the eyes. Even so, it's an interesting face.

I really like the first portrait. You have a nice painting stroke that gives your portraits some character.

,you are completly correct,I didn't do any construction and wasn't particulary worrying about that,i was just exploring technique...it actually turned out looking lucien freud-ish hehe

Jacks, thanks I really want to keep a nice sketcy paintery feel to my work,I'm not there yet,I find myself over-rendering.
    -----------------------------------------------------------
I found in the past 4 days my art went to complete shite, but today I did a sketch that was bearable.

nothing special,i def need work on my heads looking up at different angels,I even still struggle with 3/4 views at times.

Some nice studies I love the first one too, you can imagine her moving any second. Nice painting technique you have.

Don't know if you do already but I think it would benefit you to flip your stuff horizontally whilst you're working on it, I'm terrible as well for not getting features aligned correctly and I find that's the best way to nip it in the bud before it gets too out of hand (you're only ever so slightly out though on a couple)

thanks angel, haha i flipped canvas like crazy on the hooded lady and the asian lady in the first post,I did on the others too,but at that stage they got scrapped/got bored of em so I didn't bother fixing.
I've seen professionals make drastic changes when they have flipped,so that makes me feel a little better lol.

    -------------------------------

anyway,I wasn't happy with the direction my last update was going so it went into my scrap folder until I am ready to jump back in it.

The problem i'm having with most painting is defining good edges and not getting everything too soft and messy,so I had an aha! moment, and started trying different techniques.

The aim of these studies was to create an image using simple shapes/edges and impressions,so that when the image is zoomed out it looks like there is a lot of detail but theres really not.I think i'm heading somewhere so i'm pretty excited to work on my next illustration.

Fun stuff so far, I really like the 3rd image in your first post- she's just so darn cute ^_^
-You seem to have a portrait theme so far, - Your blog has some nice bg work and Animation .
I dig your splash - my last job included 2D effects, they're pretty damned fun.
Keep posting stuff- and bring some of that variety over here. ^_^
    Happy sketching.

Really liking those square-brush studies from the 19th, you're doing a great job of capturing the impression of shape. =)

You have absolutely incredible brush strokes. So efficient and emotive. I wish I could do that, and even though I try very hard it's going to be difficult to get up to this level.
The values you create with them are pretty amazing too, especially the first picture.

I don't know, I just like the way you paint. Thanks for sharing!

I like your style, specially the big, hard square-ish strokes interest me beause it is so different to the way I do things and how it works in my head. That first woman is amazing.

And, thanks for your comment in my SB

    Hi dude!

Some natural talent flowing there fo sho'!
Make sure you draw a lot of very clear perfect sketches (of heads for instance) before you dive into fancy suggestive/impressionist techniques, you will find that if you can really control basic constructive head drawing it would be a lot easier to then go ahead and have fun with whatever rendering techniques you may want to experiment with.
Here's a happy cliche for you; gotta learn the rules before you break em
    Just my 2 cents.

I prefer the zoomed out version. I like the idea of working with planes, but you didn't do it with the nose and it shows.
