Semi Speed paint studies and what not.

I decided to get off my butt and be proactive about drawing again, so I went ahead and did a few studies and sketches to hopefully increase my skill in all areas (though environments are my biggest weakness) I'm looking for any advice to help make me a more efficient and better artist.

For each image i set the timer to 1 hour, my end goal would be to get things like this down in 15 minutes...

a self portrait 1 hr (yeah its goofy and completely over the top)

a few 30 minute portrait studies, aside from the pencil ones, i wanted to try something different and paint in shapes versus lines just to see what the outcome would be...being that im still extremely new to painting and more of a "draftsman" : /

a 2 hour color study of one of my friends, very tough

    a 3 hour study that i turned into venom...got carried away : /

and finally a 1hr 40 min study done with chalk

    expression sketches

trying to build my face/expression abilities, the largest one i just made up. I'm currently trying to find time that I can actually do some life drawing rather than just copy photos. Tis hard.

Really cool stuff here. The motion you have captured in the fighters is very nice, and you seem to have a good grasp on nailing the likeness of your subject. Really reminds me that I need to do more stuff like this. lol
    cheers dude

Hey, cool stuff you have going here. I like the wrestler studies, they looked very fun to paint.

Your 2D observational skills are good, but you need to practice a bit more on the 3D volumetric side a bit. I noticed that the eyes look a bit flat sometimes, just watch out for the placement of the eyes within the skull. Try practicing drawing in 3D shapes rather than just copying with lines. Life drawing does help with thinking more in 3D.
In your paint renders they also look sometimes a bit flat or clay-like. Try to paint out the volumes (other than just the change in value).

That chalk render is really awesome, I love the lighting and the range of colours used.

    Keep up the good work!

some 30 min photo studies of friends of mine, the "toned" one was ridiculously frustrating, and i actually had to bust out the guidelines just to see why the hell my drawing kept looking like crap...dunno if thats cheating, but its learning right? anyways that one was done in 47 mins

    This is cool!
And great to see you use fighters as reference, then I don't have to feel so bad for using mma footage for my anatomy studies... You are way better though!

So please do keep posting, it looks good

mmmmmkay, so today besides my pencil sketches I decided to brave my weakest subject ever...environments! or "A" environment. 1hr, and i totally botched the proportions on it, possibly the colors too, good thing I'm planning on doing like a zillion of these. any tips or tricks please feel free to share : )

and Trixtar thank you! I checked out your sketchbook, looks like you're definitely heading in the right direction with the studies. The monotone painting you had of the tree and the little ice thingy were pretty nice! I don't think you should feel bad about what you use as reference as long as you learn something valuable from it. But always the best thing is drawing from life (which is something i desperately have to do)

had some recent tragedy, so I haven't been able to draw much lately but here are a couple of studies I did amidst all the chaos.

Thanks for your comment to my SB
I guess you are right that it shouldn't matter where the references are found, I personally just don't really know what to think of myself when I like watching people fight that aggressively, and then even try to draw it! :p

I'm sorry to hear you had a tragic experience, and hopefully you will be able to feel better soon still in full respect to what happened of course.

Your new mountain-painting is very beautiful!
Such things would be nice to draw from life someday...

Looks great. You're really good at facial proportions. I think spend a little more time on one or two of these, as the 1 hour 40 mins portrait is the nicest and it would be great to see a few more 2hr plus works among the speedies! You can really have a big quality jump around that time it seems.
