Cow Fighting my way to be able to draw okay-ish

    First of all: hi

I'm new around here and I really don't think my "art" is anywhere near the brilliant paintings and drawings I see here everyday. I still have a lot to learn, which is my main reason for registering to Conceptart.org

Anyway, I've been thinking about applying for a degree course in scientific visualisation. But seeing how my art lacks the polish all of you guys demonstrate, I am unsure whether this would be smart at this moment (especially since I can only apply twice).

Attached below are some sketches from my sketchbook and I would greatly appreciate any critique or advice you might give me (also concerning the issue with wether to apply or not).

Sorry for the long read and a big thank you to everyone who will answer

So far I like your sketchbook, and I look forward to see more
I don't know what exactly it is you want to apply for, but applying never hurt anyone as long as you are giving it your max and you are able to handle possible rejections. How far away is the application? Summer? -Years? Regardless, if it doesn't work whenever you want it to, then maybe next time. Hell, I am 30 and considering applying for some game school :p

But I wish you the best of success and a great new year!

    Hi Trixtar

I'm applying for Scientific Visualization. Initially my plan was to get into Game Design, but seeing how the people at the SV departmant work and what incredibly cool stuff they work on just blew me away. Walking into their (the SV-students) studio and taking a look at their projects was, at least for me, kind of like walking into a disney-studio as a kid. Seeing all those people draw all these amazing characters, landscapes and sceneries.

Actually I wanted to get into art school way earlier, but I was always afraid that due to my red-green-blindness I wouldn't stand a chance in the first place. So I worked in different jobs, none of which I particularly liked and at some point I just thought: "you can either do this for the rest of your life OR you can at least try to do what you really want".

So after having seen one of Feng Zhu's many tutorial videos, he once said "You only live once. If you don't like what you're doing, do something else" and this really stuck with me. Anyway, the portfolio is due in one month along with actualy application. I'll see how far I get with the work on it. If the work is good enough, I will apply this year, if not I will just do the year after. Either way, I really want to get into this class no matter what

Some new sketches. I should upload stuff more often >_<

I just discovered blue leads and i think they're brilliant for drawing. I'm trying to draw scientifically. Going to museums and drawing animals, but also human anatomy. There is so much to learn.

Good studies. I like how your shading follows the form! Peraps you should reinforce few of the important lines. Very nice bee, I love the rendering. More bees or insects! You should definitel apply.

Thank you very much . I've been very busy with painting stuff for school lately, so I didn't get to draw as much as I'd have liked to. Hope i can get some stuff now after all of the paintings are finished.

I've been trying to get into a anatomy with Burne Hogarths "Dynamic Figure Drawing". But as my knowledge of anatomy is rather limited I'm really having trouble with it. So I'm trying to get a grip on how to draw the body first and care about dynamics later. Also I've been told that I shouldn't read too much about how to draw what correctly and simply draw instead. Will try to do that too ^^

Nice improvement from December - April!
Good to see a range of mediums. I'd try and take it a little slower with the ink. While Ink is supposed to be loose, it's a pain to control. Keep it loose and clean and the stuff will look 10x better! Keep at it!

I'm a little confused with Links glasses... I don't recall ever getting the 'Glasses' item in Ocarina of Time... perhaps this is from one of the new 'Potter' inspired sequels?

Thx for the advice with the ink. I've been trying to apply it "Stanislink" is a friend of mine who's really into the Legend of Zelda franchise. So basically I drew him as Link. That's why he's wearing glasses (although I like idea of a HP inspired sequel )

Two more illustrations I did for school and some other stuff

Thank you The inspiration for the artwork really was Moreno. I saw some of his artworks and thought I might be able to do something similar. It's pretty difficult to draw and shade the faces the way he does so I went with something simpler >_<

My class has been to the zoo a couple of days ago. We did a lot of sketches and it was great fun.

I tried to use different mediums and draw rather quickly
