Hey Znno! Well, something that works for me, in case of concept design...

First of all, i like to put down in words, every idea that crosses my mind about the first key words (and eventually something else)... Just write down the things this words reminds you or what they mean in the piece...

While writing, i usually get some ideas of composition, so i just try out, make a quick sketch and see how it works...

When i finally get a sketch that translate the words i've been using, and make sense for it, then i try some variations, until i find the "good stuff" lol

I got the same problems sometimes, this way works for me... Hope to see more advices from Bit, Charmer and King, they are more experienced, can give great advices (im curious to see their tips too lol)...

Todays Stuff. Ive learned something but I actually still dont feel confident enough to go into the neck. Ill do a few more head studies until i study the neck, since our schedule is on hold for now

znno:Well, I actually never did that before. But if I was, i would go with leo's advice. I Read about that before, that you jot down the ideas that come to mind, certain aspects of the design, that you see in your head, or that you want to show (design wise, like round, edgy, aggressive, flowing, etc) And maybe try and convey a feeling too. Like, what should that robot represent? Is he a scary or a funny one?
You should maybe go easy on yourself and practice this with one thing only. I mean, when just i think about water, I get quite some pictures in mind, that I could tackle. And Robots is a whole nother story then.

charmer: I read your conversation with faust in your sketchbook. Quite enlightening! I love his critiques especially! That inspired me to actually spend more attention to every detail i study. Regarding your studies: Well done! Looks like you made the neck-anatomy clearer to yourself.

Looking forward to seeing more from you guys!

edit: wow, first time that i actually spend some hours on some rendering. I kinda lost track of the form here and there i guess. Considering the problems i faced I feel happy tho. Couldnt finish the ear tho.

Hello all! I'd love to join the group as well, if its not too late.
My name is Michelle, and I am 16 years old. I am very interested in digital art (especially concept art for games) and just like everyone else, I want to learn more about anatomy!
Kinda nervous about posting these...but its all about learning, right? I dont have a sketchbook uploaded, but here are some of the head studies I tried today...

Bleh...they look really different in the picture. I mean, they weren't so fantastic-looking in the first place, but the camera does not flatter them at all
Im still having problems...but I definitely learned a lot already! Happy holidays and I hope to see you guys in the new year.

KingElvis hey! awesome rendering man good job

Here are some of my studies.. I figure out that the "box" shape for the head is easier for me... i had some problems with the loomis method, I tried in the last head the box shape and its easier to me

My name is Robert, I'm currently deployed with some time on my hands to continue my art education. I have pencils, markers, charcoal and china markers at my disposal. I will also have more materials when I go home on R&R next week. I am self taught mostly, but would like to attain a formal education and work as a professional. I will upload some new sketchbook pages and such when I am at home with access to a scanner and my actual lap top.

Welcome to all the new people!

Ediarts: I found the box-method easier, too, although your loomis studies don't look too bad to me.

Welcome back, everyone! Hope you had a great new years'. It's a good thing we decided to take these two weeks off, because I didn't get much time to do any drawing at all.

With the holidays over it's back to the studies. This week, let's work on the chest.
    Happy studying!

    Hello all!

    Hiya!

I am new to the website. I hope you don't mind me joining in a bit late. I am 26 years old and from the Chicagoland area. I start my online BFA at Academy Art University in Illustration at the end of this month, so I'm super excited. I've been drawing for a while now but I finally got over the "art is a hobby and too scared to make a career out of it" deal, and finally am just going to go for it.

I don't have a sketchbook here yet. Hopefully in time I will be able to as well as progress in my artistic abilities.

I attempted to start off a torso using this as a reference. http://www.bodybuildingpro.com/samir...irbannout9.jpg

I'm also new to the digital art, and am currently using Paint Tool SAI for my art with an Intuos 4 tablet. I figured I would practice that as well.

Hello, fellas! How was the weeks off?

Well, unfortunately, didn't got time to work on chest, did a couple of pages (digital), but i'll keep working in the theme, one from reference (Bridgman) and other from imagination. So, bring the crits, mates!

    Take care everyone!

    Hey, this looks helpful!
I'm familiar with the different methods but haven't done actual anatomy studies in a sad while. I currently am doing limited work with miniatures and a small indie comic publisher and need to push my skills to break out past that and hopefully get into full-blown concept art. My blog and sketchbook give an idea of where I'm at as far as skill and those are both in my signature. Any work I do will be from pdfs, google searches, my webcam, books, or busts.

Yay, I can FINALLY post my work for this..
24 1-hour studies. I learned a lot..including.. do the studies in their own file.. then bring them in.. I ended up doing many of these very very small. Yes, many of the photo studies are more than just chest.. but I made sure the emphasis was on the chest as seen from different angles

I've been slacking, too. Bad BitJockey!

I'm at work right now but I'm going to aim to have something to post by the time I go to bed tonight.

4tonmantis: Welcome! Moving on to the abs is a good idea; I think I'll just modify the current topic in the first post to chest/abs, and then we can get back on track with the back next monday.

I'm joining in! Come on guys lets get studying!

    ---

    About me

I'm quite new to this site as I have only just decided to start taking my drawing seriously. I graduated from University last year with a BA HONS degree in Design for Exhibition & Museums. Taught me how to communication stories to an audience within a space. Tried the proper industry in a 3 month placement and hated it. I've always made a bit of money graphic design and such and now I think I want to combine everything I've ever learn (plus more) so that I can draw for a living.

Not sure exactly *what* type of living yet. Love concept art, illustration, graphic design etc.

    ---

I was just about to start some hardcore anatomy study myself. I've only ever drawn from studying other artists and sort of making up stuff on my own from a very very loosely shaped skeleton. Messy and inacurate! Time to learn the real stuff and get it right...

So I wanted to start from the beginning and do some heads - will catch up with torso's/neck ASAP!

If all my pencils don't break! I dropped them about a week ago and I've been consistantly sharpening ever since

Hey guys, I'm totally new here. Here's some of my work. Please, tell me what needs fixing!

I hope to keep this thread going with you all. I am hesitant to give critiques just now, as I have no formal training/experience. Plus it seems unwarranted to me, since I didn't notice anyone explicitly ask for them.

In the future, I'd love to give critiques. Is that something I can just expect to do here without worrying about it being unsolicited?

Anyway, here's my drawings. I spent a like 5-10 minutes on each of them. I tried to focus more on form and posture than detail. I have no idea how to render in photoshop yet, I just got the trial.

    Tear them apart, please!

Attempted to do some studies from Bridgman last night but my head just refused to concentrate. I'll try again tonight.

KateyParr: Nice skulls! The eyes in your facial studies look a bit too large for the head. What are you studying from? As a former anime artist, I've struggled with this (and still do, to an extent) and I've had good results studying from Bridgman and Loomis with this.

dino_tron: Welcome! The main purpose for this group, at least for me, is to provide a framework to ensure I work on anatomy studies on a regular basis, instead of haphazardly like I was doing before. It's not necessary to critique every single post, but if you spot something in someone's post that deserves mentioning, feel free to speak up.

Ah yes, I think you're right. I have some bad habits I should try to shake when studying. It's just so natural to draw certain things the way that I do.

I'll try to be more realistic and see what happens!

One of the reasons I drew the line studies in my last batch so slow and methodical was to avoid my existing habits. I grew up with Rob Liefeld so this is even more important for me

About the critiquing.. In my studies, I time myself on a few and wherever they get to is where they are.. mistakes and all. This helps me stay honest with myself and pushes me to work harder. If you notice in mine.. There are a lot of problems on the photos but my emphasis wasn't on making perfect hands or legs.. it was the chest.. so no matter what, I made sure I did the best I could on that area. I want the rest of the mistakes to stick out to me so that when I focus on those areas I can say.. not this time!
Anyway, I'll be getting more up in the next few days.. I'm mixing them in with landscapes, master studies, still life, and everything else I'm doing.

Whoops, forgot to change the topic yesterday. I was bad and didn't get any ab studies done last week so I'll have to play catch-up.

So moving on, this week we're doing the back.
