Logo Design

Hi guys!

So I am in my first graphic design class..and quite honestly have no idea what I'm doing. I'm much more of a representative artist, a painter, and I am having trouble simplifying things down to fit as a logo.

The project is to design two logos representing ourselves.



These were the first ideas I came up with.. my professor scrapped the head, but he liked the bird hands. However, he's made me simplify it..and I don't know how to simplify it while still keeping the basic idea behind it there. (the idea being my hands are important to me to create, and the bird represents my creative freedom).



This is what I've done with it...but I don't really like it very much anymore.

Do you have any suggestions?

And this was a random doodle I had on my sketch page that I had done while trying to come up with some ideas.. he wants me to use this one. I'm not sure what I could do with it to make it work even better than this.

Okay, I've changed a few things with the bird hands and I like this better.. the professor hasnt approved it yet, but when I described what I wanted to change it to it sounded like he liked the idea.

Anyway, critiques would be awesome!

Graphic design is very difficult i find, a blend of text, simplicity, meaning...list goes on,
i studied it for a year and know a few graphic designers also.
i could only recomend you look at more graphic arts, communication design.
where its more visual drawings, than just "logos"
though of course presentation is key still.
my only advice is to whizz out about 20-30 designs, then refine a handful, and refine once again, this will give u the ability to do quick processes and also if your "invisible client" doesnt like the ideas, youve got backups to fall on and refine. or potentially show your client that youve done several designs before you go ahead.

Thank you so much for the suggestion, Faux. I did do a little bit of that (it is not shown on here, obviously)..but no where near where I would normally - the classes we have here are very short (only 18 days), so I had too short of a timeframe to spend so much time on concepting.

But I will definitely keep what you said in mind for the next project!

I'm a little late with uploading these, but I ended up doing as you said, Faux, and I sketched out a bunch more designs..and I chose these two as my final designs. I got 99% on both of them, so yay! I'm probably going to fiddle with the logo on the left and actually use that one as a logo for myself.

Oops, I didn't mean to make it that big! I'll fix it later...its kinda late. I just wanted to show you these concepts I've come up with for my current project - redesigning the packaging for a tampon box. I am particularly partial to the pinup girl (a play on the pinup girls with the rockets..in this case a tampon) because I think it is fun, which would make this project much more appealing to me... but I have a feeling he'll prefer a more minimalist design. I haven't had a chance to do many sketches yet, but here are the ones I do have.

Logos must have well defined forms, in order for the watcher to identify it in a split of a seccond. If you stare at a logo and didn't understand fast wat it represents, thats not a good logo.
