Thanks for visiting my sketchbook dude! Nice cartoons, keep working! To be honest, your work seems to be lacking construction. You might want to go back to the basics for a while and study Loomis or maybe Preston Blair.
And remember it's not about how much work you do, it's how much you learn from itKeep going dude!
EDIT
okay, I'm going a bit more in depth, I really hope you don't find this rude. To restate, your work seems to have a lot of anatomical, proportional, and design flaws and you need to go back and study what real life looks like before making stuff up out of your imagination study this as well as Loomis/Blair

Hey Man,
boy I haven't posted on this site in a while! I've been on tour with the band I play in for the last 2 and a half weeks. I'm actually in El paso TX right now! We won't be going to arlington though ;\. We are going to houston and austin. Thanks for the comment in my SB. I'm really eager to do some intense study when I get back home in another 2 and a half weeks! I like your most recent stuff. Like vertical said, there are some things that could be tweaked if you are going for certain realistic aspects (besides some of the cofusion that a couple of the tagents create).. Either way. cool stuff!
Just working on design and correctly translating anatomy to cartoons, starting with faces.

cooooool![]()
Glad you appreciated the crit! Lines look good on your faces! I like the guy on the left. But you seem to have made them chrome. I'm not just saying that because they're in grey-scale, the only place a spot if value is that sharp on the form (not edges) of skin if if it's a highlight or if the skin is wet I guess. That could work if you were doing cel shading but you used soft shades too. Also, the light doesn't seem to reveal the forms or be coming from a consistent direction.
I think it would be a lot easier to just use lines for design/anatomy stuff
Hey, thanks for the reply, vertical. I just did some quick shading on these and wasn't concerned with too realistic of lighting. Appreciate the comments, though, as always.![]()
updated the faces post, took out the shading so as to only work on one thing at a time.
Hi again.
You asked about my background paper.
Well, I dont really remember where I got it.
I googled for stained paper or something like that in high resolution and eventually found this. You could so smth youself by staining a paper, scanning it and using some effects and colour layers on it...that's what I would try to do.
More male head studies. Sketched a pose on the right, not too comfortable with the anatomy yet, so I definitely plan on going through everything in detail as I have been with the faces.
More sketchbook stuff, this time working on torso studies. Oh, and a giraffe.
Man, I absolutely LOVE your comic-style stuff! Really digging the work you've been doing from reference too and the anatomy studies look cool as well. You've made very obvious improvements, keep it up!
How is the schedule working out for you, how many hours do you do each day? I feel like I get "stuck" on single drawings and end up wanting to work on the same one for too long to make that work for me I think, but maybe just doing it would actually be a good way of forcing myself to work more efficiently.![]()
oh cool cartoony stuffnice "flow" in those anatomy studies :>

Thanks for replying in my sketchbook! Sounds like you are right on track man, and working on a lot of different areas all at once. I'm kind of lost to be honest, I have a hard time not ending up wanting to "finish" everything. I guess since most of my drawing experience has been traditional, it's just a habit. Not necessarily a bad one, but it's hard not to worry that you're not getting the most out of all the time you spend if that makes sense. Anyways, show us an update!
Update. Girl at work asked for me to draw a giraffe for her. She wanted it as a poster, kind of. Here's what I've come up with.

Good job on the giraffe dude, I bet she was very happy with it! Yeah definitely paying attention to different types of lighting and learning to identify them is super important, especially when your goal is to get better at drawing from imagination. I've pretty much stuck to studies from photos and master copies so far, and even though I'm not planning on doing much from imagination any time soon, I still try to pay attention to what's going on in the subject rather than just go into auto-pilot (although it's tempting and happens a lot too)!
Your giraffe is fantastic! I love the stylized look here.
Worked on some figure painting today. I don't think I'll go so far as to finish it - kinda ADD in that regard and I don't want to spend so much time on perfecting a study - but I am satisfied how much I learned from it, I like how much I understand the head and torso more and want to continue to push my painting skills further. Next to work on - arms, legs, then on to hands and feet.
Another figure painting study. I'm wanting to finish this one, though, so there'll be a final posting of this in the near future.
Hey! It's really good to come in here and see some updates - keep up those studies!
I'm loving that giraffe- has a ton of character. Maybe a different background color?
The latest lady painting is beautiful too - excited to see more- keep it up
liquorbleu - Thanks a ton for checking back in. I'll be sure to do the same with yours too!
Finished the figure painting of the girl in the dress. There are always going to be things that I'll see that I want to fix/redo, but I can only spend so much time on one thing before I just get sucked into mindlessly painting without progress, and that just drains me to the point where I don't want to continue. So I try and avoid that at all costs. Enjoy this one. And I'm on to something else!
Did a painting from a screen capture today. Name that movie...
Awesome figures man, you did a really good job. And the movie is Fight Club #ding ding ding ding#, what did I win? I think I've seen that movie at least 50 times, not kidding. I used to watch it at least once a week when I was younger. I'm pretty sure I can finish just about every sentence from start to finish. Good times!
Wanted to give this week's CHOW a shot. My idea is an altar boy that has to fight off his demonic-turned church. Here are the quick turn around sketches.
Started my routine studies back up. Today was a portrait.
Friday means material studies! Did a series of metals, all with varying degrees of reflective surfaces.

Recent bunch look like a good jump up. The one thing I was going to comment on was making a more focused light source instead of having large area's almost shiny to create form. But since post 82 you started playing with darker values in targeted areas. Though personally lighting studies are some of my favorite to do, fun stuff. Especially with reflective material![]()
Jfierce: always appreciate kind words and criticism, man, thanks. I definitely feel like I've been improving a lot more since I've been painting daily. Sticking to a schedule has kept me going in a good direction. Only bad thing is the girlfriend isn't too happy with how much time I work. Eek.
I'm working on a commission today. It's a birthday present for this girl's boyfriend, who's an avid motorcyclist/racer. So far I'm just working on rendering the figure and bike, then I'll work up a decent background for it. Here's what I have so far:
HiI'm a big fan of the doodle monkey- it'd be awesome if you rework it sometime down the line
Hey cool paintings. Don't forget to mix up color study with black/n whites. Values are pretty important
