David - Thanks a lot for stopping by and it's great to hear from you again, man.
More studies over the past few days - figure constructions, perspective studies and form construction, free flowing gesture exercises, and silhouette exercises (I've been struggling with coming up with decent silhouettes that had good shape and rhythm to them) using harsh "angular" curves, flowing curves, and a mixture of the two together.
As a general note and continuing on what David and several others have commented on, I know that I've put up nothing but studies over the past few months. Most of the reason for this is that I've had the luxury (thanks to my new job) to really buckle down and spend hours at a time studying a single topic until I feel like I've gotten very comfortable with it and then I move onto another. I don't know if this is the "right" or traditional way to study, but I've felt like getting into creative/finished work without at least somewhat a solid foundation is not only wasting my time that I could be studying and improving these foundational skills but also very discouraging when I've spent a lot of time on a piece only to have it not come out anywhere near what I'd like it to be. Just look at any of my first posts on here to get evidence of that. I haven't had the financial ability to go to school for art or design, which sometimes catches me at a weak moment and bothers me, making me feel like I'm at a disadvantage, but over the years I've found that if there's one thing I'm good at it is teaching myself something when I'm determined to learn it (just go ahead and ask me anything about music theory, talk to me in Spanish, a little French, or ask how to code something very simple in C++ for example). Okay, the programming isn't a great example, but that shit's hard and you know it. During my very brief time on ConceptArt, I've seen many other sketchbooks and am continually FLOORED with the amount of creativity, technical ability, and just overall inspiring works that get put up on here and it pushes me to work harder and smarter each time my pen touches a piece of paper. I aspire to be among the ranks of all the greats on here and so anytime I do a study, I feel like I'm never just "doing a study", but advancing myself to eventually becoming on of these guys. Don't take any of this as an excuse to not be creative. I do agree that my work needs to start becoming more and more focused on finishing pieces as I progress and this will happen. I just wanted to give a reason for my lack of doing so lately and hope that my studying has shown that I've gotten better and more confident in my foundation over the past few months. Thanks for letting me rant. *Off soap box*.
