wouldnt pinup fall more into the CHOW category?
Story exploration, more focus on the actual pinup with the next post.

Damn... think outside the box for pin-up..... O_o
If I weren't sick I'd jump in my corset... well.. I guess I'll just have to get over it LOL![]()
@LA-Fairy: I bet some of us googled "pinup", after reading the sentence "make sure it's a pinup." in the requirements. And despite Andrew telling us that this is fairly unrestricted, we find the definition of pinup fairly restricted.
As far as I'm concerned I only thought of Elvgren and One-Page comic book spreads. And decided for Elvgren.

Fairly typical, I didn't really plan this one. I'm a bit far from my tablet right now so won't be able to colour it. Probably won't participate either.
emerging you are right in what you say, pinup could quite easily fit into CHOW, in the same way some of the past briefs here could easily have fitted into EOW. However the main difference here, Illustration of the week asks for fully finished images, where background and the whole scene must also be considered, whether that be highly detailed of even a simple white background, basicly images which in the real world would be considered fully finished and ready for print, unlike CHOW which only asks for the character itself, and its the design of the character itself which is most important. Or to put it in layman's terms, if i wanted to produce a book or a poster of a pinup i would ask IOW, but if i wanted to create a game, animation of some crazed mad pinup girl, or even anything that requires a fully working design, then i would ask CHOW.
If that makes sense, lol
So I know I'm a little late to the party, and with Thanksgiving and everything I'm not sure if I'll even get this done. But, I thought I'd post it anyway. I though I'd do pin-up with a fantasy twist, so I did a mermaid. I'd love critiques.
This would be considered a pin-up, right?

Been working on this.
Haven't had time to render the shirt or shoes or do any work on the background. Haven't had time to crit any work either.
Hopefully today.
Here's my progress...

Looking good guys!
Here's my input so far, not quite sure where I'm going with this...
Progress so far~
Wrote out a whole long post full of crits for each entry and the computer shut down before I could post it. Stupid stupid work computer.
Took me awhile to work up the energy tostart again.
Miss Elizabeth: Is she in a donut? Her hips look odd- kind of rubbery. Add definition to where her leg meets her torso. Also her hair is REALLY big. Nearly twice the size of her head.
drunknmunky: I love the pose but her butt looks a little off center. Adding some curve to the outside of the far cheek would even it out some. Her nose and eyebrows seem a bit off.
zombie chinchilla: Cool idea for a sexy mermaid, but its a very static pose. Its hard to give any crits since its so rough, but what is the line on her forehead between her eyes?
rgeorge: Im loving the retro style. Something about her hips seems a bit odd. Maybe its how thick they are compared to her lower legs, or the way there's no bend to her skirt- just an overhanging blouse. I don't know exactly but something looks a little off.
keith eager: Ambitious idea. Can you finish a whole page with 9 characters on it?
bergy69: Cool idea but its too big to fit on my monitor. The heels stick back too far. They don't look like they would support her weight. Her left upper arm blends into her toorso. More definition would make it stick out. The purple coloring which is the same as the background makes it look like she is translucent instead of reflective.
P The almost complete lack of shading makes her look very flat. I'm assuming this was a style choice, but it doesn't really appeal to me.
Subway doodle: Is she being crucified by a lollipop? Her fingers are so long and thin they appear creepy. Her hair should be bigger. It makes it look like the top of her head was cut off. Her feet are really small.
Leonartdo: What is she sitting on? Her eyes are a bit off. One looks higher than the other and they are too far apart.
w00tf0rfr00t: Your drawing looks very flat. Its obvious you spent alot of time rendering the blanket but it doesn'tseem obvious where the light is coming from. The similar lighting on the blanket makes it look level instead of curving around her body. Especially the area over her hips and boobs.
manabreakfast: Your zombie is very creepy, but not sexy at all. Her shoulder is huge which makes her look hunchbacked. Either her head is too small or her hips are too big.
zeitwolf- the tray isn't on the same plane as the table. It looks like she is going to spill her drink. I know its still a rough but she is very flat and 2D
Well, that's my two cents. Take it or leave it...

okay here is my second WIP, trying to take the critique into account regarding the shoulders/hips etc. i HOPE i can finish this by the deadline despite holiday madness, if not i'll finish it regardless but we will see. lots of stuff to fix and add here, i feel like her head may be too "big" at this point but i'll have to rely on fresh perspective to judge from after my belly is full of turkey later tonight..
any more critique is welcome![]()
Okay, here's an updated WIP. I got most of it done, now all I need to do is clean it up some. Her face is ugly, too, and her hand.
CRITS-
LA Fairy- Really nice, I like her pose and the shading's nice. Her right arm, though, looks a little flat. I think it's the way it's shaded.
Miss Elizabeth- The shading's nice, are you going to color it? I like the idea of a cherry, but it doesn't really fit with the donut theme. And her hair is really high, lol.
drunknmunky- I agree with kafkadreams, her butt seems off. Otherwise, it looks nice. Can't wait to see it.
Kafkadreams- Don't really have anything constructive to say. Nice so far.
rgeorge- I like it so far, too bad you won't be able to enter.
keith eager- Interesting concept. Will your final follow the same format?
Zeitwolf- Cute idea, I like it a lot. She reminds me of Uma Thurman from Pulp Fiction. I think some arm tattoos will look nice of her, too.
Manabreakfast- Mmm, zombie hooker. Looks nice. I like the 50s style, too. I think some more gore would be nice, like a chunk taken out of her leg or arm. Her skin could probably be more pale and dead, too. Otherwise, I like it. Edit- Ha, you beat me. I like what you've done with it, but I still think she could be paler and deader.
W00tforFr00t- Yay for newbs! *High-five* The pose is a little simple, and I think the best thing to do is find some stock to reference. Her right foot seems a little off, too. Otherwise, the shading's sound. Nice job.
leonartdo- Ha, I like your name.Nice work so far, but it's hard to critique something so rough. I'd love to see more progress.
Subway Doodle- I really like the concept, and I'd love to see more details, like more things in the background. I think some texture on the background would be better, too.
P- Cute style. Very clean, I like it a lot. Don't really have anything constructive to say.
Bergy68- Nice concept, I like the idea a lot. I like that she has high heels built in, too, ha ha. Can't wait to see the final.
Blankslate- Aw man that made me laugh.
birdsatemyface- Nice concept, you really captured her well. I can definitely see her as a young, pretty model who's grown old.

Hello everyone.
I am Uranio and this is my first post in concept art (and an art forum).
So... that was a long presentation...
To the sketches:
This is the general idea:
She is holding this little buddy...
And a few different options... The tentacle in the crotch looked like a bit to much for an old men like me..., so I changed for something more suggestive.

I hope to get the painting done in time.
Good work all of you.
Thanks for reading.
Ok that's it. Bye.
interesting topic, Japanese sexy boy make me smile)) what about me, I can't even hope that I'll finish my illustration, I have only a sketch of this...

Ohhhhh noooooo, my first post in Concept art was trap in moderation....
It will be posted here when is released.
Here's my rough for the pinup. I wish I'd photographed it when it was still just the construction lines, it looked so different without the lighting.

My nearly finished WIP. Filled in detail figure and fused bass/speaker instrument. Working on shaping the hands, hair and the background. I appreciate the critiques.
Ugh, decided to scrap the last wip. The more I worked on it, the more is wasn't working for me. So! Started again. Hopefully I can get it finished~
