Immortal Cintiq wants to be good at Drawing

    Hi guys,

My name is Mike, im 25, and I joined ca.org in order to improve my drawing skills.

There are some ridiculously talented and motivated people here and hopefully, some of the talent and discipline will rub off me.

Any harsh criticism, suggestions for improvement or words of wisdom is greatly appreciated.

So here's some of my crap...

The first two are ps paintings for photos. Im still learning how to paint with FAPC (famous artists painting course)

Then a head drawing, Zhang lu copy, figure drawing, copy from Vilppu's drawing manual, exercise from Preston Blair's book, and finally imagination drawings.

    Hey guys,

    Some more Studies n stuff.

    The Gestures r 1-2mins.

I couldn't finish the head study.

The imagination drawings are embarrassing but whatever. The last one is doodled on the train.

Anyone know how to write in between the images? lol

I really like those figure studies... are they from photos/life or other drawings? The lines have a great flow to them.

To write between images... you know the attachment icon, the paperclip? After you upload the images, you can click the little down arrow next to it to see a list of attachments, and insert them into the post wherever you want.

    Hey, thanks Sean.

Acutally, almost all the paintings I've even done is uploaded on this page. Im still sorta learning so color is kinda premature. And scares me a bit.

ALL women ALL OF THESE gorgeous women and two midget male rapper caricatures and a silly elephant phallus stand-in?

12 years old is the subtext here. Seriously dude. Draw some men. Men are seriously beautiful, and beauty does not necessarily equate to sexuality.

they are really nice studies btw

I humbly admit I'm one of those people!

Ok...so I'm SERIOUSLY joking...BUT you have a really good start here.

Those grey scale pieces are really tasty. The two figures and portrait at the top of post #1 are excellent.

It's good to see the gestures and anatomy study. Keep after those with a vengance!

This is the 100 2 Min head exercise on Zhang Lu's DVD. Its was really tough to trny get a readable head in such a short time. I think im up to # 38 . The last one is imagination head drawings after doing the Zhang Lu exercise. Indeed i need a lot more practice.

Hey Thanks Strange Purple, Yeah, preston blairs book is a great way to learn to make your drawing more solid.

So one more drawing before I go to bed.

This time, I tried to lay in the darks and lights before going into detail. Although I feel more comfortable going straight into details and rendering, I find that it is easier to get the correct values with this method. Plus this one took me a little less then 4 hours wereas the one before took 6.

great studies so far, i was going to say your faces could do with some work, but they seem a lot stronger than the initial couple you posted. and i do agree with
Naomi Ningishzidda (not totally that was a bit of a rant) but just drawing one gender will make your default forms lean towards that said gender when you draw out your head, but im sure you can draw men perfectly well, and its not usually a problem when your a man and dont draw men because you have a better sence of your own anatomy.

either way good stuff, hows your colours and non referenced work? its not key, but can be depending on what you wanna get out of drawing.

    Keep it up.

dog-faced Hey, thanks for the critique.
I think your right about drawing one gender. I probably I spend 98% of my time drawing females yet I find it much easier to draw males.
As for colors, I've only started tackling tone, and im sorta starting to get the hang of, so i think Ill hold off on the color for now. With imagination drawings, I still suck really bad.

    cloudcan Thanks Man.

    GypsySwan Thanks very much.

I think today was an off day, everything I attempted ended up going to hell so Im not gonna upload that stuff. This is stuff is from yesterday.

1hr 15min, figure from photo. Next time, im gonna draw more structurally instead of 2d drawing. Also Im gonna tryn spend more time of moving the half tone into the light.

Did another Study b4 going to bed.

With this one, I tried to be more structural with the head drawing. Wereas the preceding head studies I uploaded, the drawings are done strictly two dimensional.

Extremely good studies and attention to detail, try doing some animals as well, it helps with more imaginative creature structures all depends on what you'd like to end up doing one day i guess, but for what i've seen from my past few visits your definitely got a good grasp on anatomy and form, where to next? and then attack from there.

I know I'm not skilled enough to give proper feedback, but I really like them!

    rumpenstiltzkin Thanks Very Much

AdrianNagorski Hey Thanks, yeah animal studies sound fun, but I feel like I can barely draw the figure from imagination so im gonna hold off on that. I think next is perspective and landscapes.

    Trixtar Thanks very much.

BTW anyone know a good hair painting tutorial?

So these are 3 Min Gestures. I filled up my Newprint pad and in order to be frugal, I went back in to fill in the blank parts with gestures.

I know you're worried about being slow, but the thing is once you do something once you can do it a second time faster. It's much more important to start off by doing it right. Good job on the imagination one!
