Faces of Dread

Hello everyone, Im kind of new around here so I want to say hi to you all fellow artists! I've been exploring some of the sketchbooks and there's a lot of amazing talent here. The name of this thread kind of refers to the dread I feel when drawing faces, I think I got the creatures and demons nailed but drawing faces always gives me trouble. I want to get better at this and could use any friendly advice,tips, exercises, criticisms or anything. I'll keep posting and again greetings.

Some old digital paintings I did a while ago, also a sketch. But I plan to fill this thread with dreaded faces (they give me so much trouble!).

Good work on those faces, I know they can be quite a challenge. Be mindful of head shape, though. It looks like on some of these sketches the face is too large for the head (like the first face in post 7). I like that you have a great deal of contrast, in your work. Keep it up!

Thanks Fungus I'll get to work on my shapes. I checked your sketchbook and I must say im very impressed. I should have joined CA a long time ago, it seems this community is full of talented, nice and supportive people

Hey man, actually I think that those face are really nice!
But if I have to make an advice, I would say that make some studies from skulls, that's what everyone recommend, and it helps a lot, really mate! keep doing it (sorry for my english)

Just keep doing what you're doing man! Bit of practice everyday makes all the difference.

If you haven't already, check out some of George B Bridgman's material on constructing heads. I also dread drawing faces, as they are usually the main focal point our eyes get drawn to when we first see a painting or drawing, so they really have to be top notch. Bridgman simplifies it into an easy formula, which you can then expand on with your own creativity.

exdakly where might I find this Bridgman material? I found constructive anatomy but im working on heads at the moment, I'll jump to the rest off the body in a later day. I want my character's eyes to speak, to feel alive and I know I've got a lot of hard work to do, so if you can point me to the material I will devour it promptly. thanks again

Life drawing classes would definitely be a sound investment. Good skills, keep posting.

I would love to have some Life drawing classes but It's currently very difficult to find a good place in my city, and also my city is very unsafe but im looking for a good place to continue, I used to have lfe drawing classes but I seem to have forgotten a lot of the stuff. Thank you slayer, by the way I checked your sketchbook and you have some wicked drawings from life srsly they're amazing!

Thanks, smallergod. Setting up life classes is what I do, in and around 'work' and it's so important. It's amazing how some so-called artists are so unwilling to learn to draw properly, or take up the offer to maintain their skills. I seriously believe it's the best way to hone observation skills and take your drawing skills to new places. You obviously have a solid grounding, I really think it could widen your scope (if you can find a good / safe class!).

I have no answer to your questions, just keep drawing.. try to improve upon your drawings. Using reference where needed can help your understanding allot, just as drawing from reference will train your eye.

In the end just draw and draw till your arm fall off, trust your own mind, how limited it might seem, just push and push your work. Dream away and play.

Some random heads! I just wanted to say that my nick is not because im presumptious, it's in fact a song I had stuck in my head at the time of making my account and couldn't think of anything else when choosing a name. thanks for understanding.

Some sound sketching going on here. The last one could've benefitted from a bigger page (or a smaller drawing) so as to get the whole head in there? I feel the mouth too high and detached from the face due to the lack of chin. Keep posting.

Thanks Slayer! I'll work on the mouths then. I know im kind of behind the curve but Im trying to find out what im doing wrong, sometimes you need a fresh outlook from someone else, and Im still looking for thos life drawing classes I think I'll find one sonn and then I'll post some new stuff.
